no taste of spain

As part of the Taste of Spain week hundreds of flamenco dancers will be participating in the attempt to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest number of people dancing the Sevillanas. All of my flamenco friends are likely to be there and I’ve been looking forward to the event. There's Spanish food, drink and music throughout Regent Street and Heddon Street, so even in this dull, damp weather it promises to be enormous fun and a great photo opportunity too.

Sadly I’m not well enough to cover it.

first issue

After an incredible amount of work the proofs for the first issue of TangoWorld are ready. Leandro has just sent over the proofs for review. After the final edits it will be available for free in milongas and tango classes throughout the UK from early June.

the last noche

Just back from the final quest for good images to go into the first ever TangoWorld Magazine. Rather like “Noche de Milongas” in the Argentine magazines, one section will comprise photographs of people enjoying milongas.

Leandro anticipates a growing number of contributions from readers for this section and in time it should come to represent milongas all over the UK rather than those I can reach.

In the mean time it’s up to me.

why tango

Ten years ago Cesar the charming Columbian was invited to tour ten cities in the UK by Danza Latina. He has been here ever since, maintaining commitments made in those first months and developing his portfolio and reputation with great success. His impressive CV includes performing in groups directed and choreographed by himself and others, directing a community group, starting a successful salsa company and a variety of other roles as tango dancer, teacher and choreographer. He and his partner Carolina recently opened a tango school back in Cali and have been so successful in Britain that they’ve been featured on a stamp issued by the Royal Mail.

Today, during an interview for a piece scheduled to coincide with the build-up of publicity for his London Tango Festival he shared opinions as to what makes tango attractive to so many people:

“Tango attracts people in many ways. The desire to dance socially or for themselves attracts older people and they’re impressed by friends who already do. The fact that tango is danced with embrace, touching the other person in a smooth and soft way – whether it’s your body or your hand or whatever – is also attractive to them. Some people only dance tango to be embraced by others. But I think most people are encouraged by the challenge of the movement of tango or by its spirit. Everyone seems to look for its spirit. Women demonstrate more sensitivity than men with their body movement. They sense the rhythm and the lead more and respond more but they also have to be more patient than in their normal lives. In general, while men like the steps but women prefer to explore the dance with their body and discover more of the possibilities inherent in tango. Then they like to educate their bodies to the tango. Men don’t. It’s just how it is.”

I’ve decided to see whether others agree.
