Time Flies

Last November Doug at GreatDance.com asked me to give a brief description of this weblog and my thoughts on the future direction of dance blogging. Today I was finally able to spend an hour responding to the first part of the request but I still don’t have the time for the rest. I’m happy to describe my blog and what I write about, but to put together something sensible on the future of dance blogging is going to take some heavy thinking and even more time.

I meant to do it before, but life has its own priorities and its own ups and downs. Family, friends, watching and learning dance, writing, training for the next expedition and paying the bills are all important and I’m sure that writing Christmas cards and wrapping presents takes longer every year!

Now it’s 2006 already. Another year has flown. Once again it's time to think through my experiences so that I can grow from them, build on the good things or at the very least avoid the more obvious mistakes. It's a worthwhile and gloriously clichéd way to start the new year and so totally in keeping with the rest of the season.

Resolutions for 2006

See more stuff byRichard Alston. The Sadlers Wells performance in February 2005 was stunning. The languid sensuality and searing melancholy of the performance became my benchmark for the year and many other choreographies suffered in comparison.

Dance more tango. Even as a beginner I’ve found tango with a good lead and the right music to be amongst the most intoxicating experiences I’ve ever had. I want more!

Find a regular partner. This isn’t a reference to getting together with a significant other (although that would be nice) or even to getting a regular social dance partner but since I don’t have the resources, time or desire to see the same performance more than once (unless it’s flamenco), it’s simply the best way to ensure consistency of reviews! Of course to do this I’m going to need to socialise which is bound to involve more dancing. Thank goodness I don’t live in Mumbai!

Don’t read anything I’ve edited once it has gone to press.

Do more flamenco lessons in England and Spain. It’s not just the exercise or the viscerality of the dance, but because the more I learn, the more I understand and the better I can write about it. Besides which, discipline and duende are good for the soul.

So despite a few glitches 2005 has been good to me. Maybe that’s why the time has passed so quickly! I hope the same is true for you.

Happy New Year!
