ROH Strategic Plan

The following is the summary of the 32 page Royal Opera House press release that was issued on the 28th January 1999. Use the index, left, to goto whichever section you need for more information.

The new fully-flexible Studio Theatre, seating a maximum of 420, will be used from the first days of the Royal Opera House’s Opening Festival for lunchtime recitals, education events for professionals, students and the public and community events.

The 1999/2000 season will include lunchtime recitals by members of the Royal Opera House Orchestra, The Royal Opera and the Chorus, with additional opportunities for rising young singers from outside the organisation to perform.

Typical community events will include the performance by St Clement Danes School of the pupils’ own opera developed through the Write an Opera scheme, and commissioned works for performance by professionals and young people created under the auspices of Blueprint 2000. SingAlongs led by Chorus Director Terry Edwards with members of The Royal Opera Chorus will be held, and a continuing programme of Insight Days, Family Days and Children’s Days aimed at a variety of participants will also be scheduled.

Outside organisations invited to present work in the Studio Theatre in the 1999/2000 season will include British Youth Opera and The Yehudi Menuhin School amongst others.

One of the ballet rehearsal studios will convert to form a third performance space, the Studio Upstairs, which will have its own programme of workshops, events and small-scale performances for audiences of up to 200. These will be programmed by Royal Ballet principal dancer Deborah Bull who says: "As well as providing a space for young choreographers in The Royal Ballet to develop before their work is exposed on the main stage, I hope that the Studio Upstairs will become pivotal in opening up the ROH to the arts community."

The 1999/2000 season will be a pilot year for the Studio Upstairs. Schemes for the first year will include the provision of space in which independent dancers can arrange their own regular class and provide public performing opportunities for graduate-level dance students from schools around the country. One of the main events of the season will include the David and Goliath Festival, which will present the work of independent and small-scale artists across a variety of artforms. It’s aim will be to enhance the existing support available to creative organisations throughout the arts, contributing stock in-house resources including lighting and sound equipment, and helping participants to develop contacts with appropriate expertise in all areas.
