ROH Strategic Plan

The following is the summary of the 32 page Royal Opera House press release that was issued on the 28th January 1999. Use the index, left, to goto whichever section you need for more information.

The future direction of the Royal Opera House, including most of the elements contained within this announcement are guided by the recently completed strategic plan for the Royal Opera House, Arts, Artists and Audiences: A Plan for the New Millennium. Recently approved by the Board of the Royal Opera House and the Arts Council of England, the plan places a renewed focus on the artistic and educational programming of the organisation. It also simplifies and reduces the staff structure, reduces the number of governing bodies, and suggests new approaches to fund-raising and marketing.

Several elements of the plan have already been initiated:

Detailed plans for the Opening Festival in November and December have been created and scheduled, and are announced here:

An active programme for the Studio Theatre has been developed.
The Studio Theatre will house numerous education programmes as well as performances by Royal Opera House artists and other performing arts groups.

As recommended in Richard Eyre’s report, governance has been simplified with the elimination of the Ballet and Opera Advisory Boards. Several new Board members, most with direct arts experience, will be added to the Board this year.

An active search for the Artistic Director of The Royal Opera resumed in December, following the Arts Council's announcement of public funding which, together with revised union agreements and the reaffirmation of commitment from major donors, confirmed a secure future for the organisation.

Restructuring of many technical and artistic departments has been completed following a reduction in the size of the staff.

Operation Overture, an internal scheme for assuring that the opening of the new theatre is accomplished with maximum efficiency, has been launched.

Discussions with the BBC on a long-term programme of opera and ballet broadcasts and associated documentary and other projects has commenced.

The strategic plan is supported by a detailed two-year budget which reveals financial performance in line with previous projections. The budget indicates that the programming anticipated by the Royal Opera House can be supported by the recently announced levels of government funding, in conjunction with the expected level of private contributions and box office revenue projections using the pricing structure announced here.
