London Contemporary Dance Schools collaboration with Wimbledon School of Art and Design should have led to a clash of innovative ideas – instead two out of the seven pieces pushed the boundaries beyond typical student work. The evening at the Place, on the 24th March, was more of a marathon than a sprint, with the setting up of each of the seven pieces amounting to more time than the performance itself. The choreographer/designer collaborations led to either the design or dance overshadowing its counterpart in most works, giving the impression that one artist was the dominant party. To focus on the positives Places of Non-belonging by Riccardo Buscarini (choreographer) and Henry Fry (designer) created the perfect partnership proving that less is definitely more. Three dances tried to transverse the stage but bound by tight bungee ropes the trio never made their destination. Buscarini showed maturity and intellect in his choice of movement, steering clear of manic spring led movement. Instead the dancers barely moved for the majority of the piece, their impetus coming from within rather than the ropes that restrained them. ![]() © Benedict Johnson
Although simplistic in movement and filmatic style the single dancer, Moreno Solinas, took the audience on an increasingly descriptive story of him being chased by a bull, chasing and bull and finally a convoluted story of him as a matador. New Art Club should watch their backs as a new comic choreographer is waiting in the wings.
