Most Promising Male Julien Meyzindi (POB)
Most Promising Female Eleonore Guerineau (POB)
Worst Production
Special Mention Laurent Hilaire's unforgettable 'Apollo' in his Farewell performance; he later teamed up with Wilfried Romoli and gave another impressive performance (Un trait d'union); the sad departure of Jean-Guillaume Bart as etoile of POB; Lopatkina & Kolb in 'Giselle' - a classic case of 'mind over matters'; Parisian troupe's successful take on an Ashton favourite (très très chic Fille!); Bussell & Avis in Song of the Earth - painfully emotional, a 'genuine' love duet; Cojocaru and Pennefather in Diamonds - never imagined that pdd could be danced with such joy and happiness (and it worked!); Yoshida & Hristov in R&J - Hristov was truly an eye-opener as Romeo, and they made a fantastic pair; Tokyo Ballet in Les Sylphides - they danced like no other, with sensibility and aesthetic of their own - that moved me; Bolshoi Ballet - absolute delight & highlight of the year; Death of Maurice Bejart - the end of an era...
Eye-opener of the Year Gary Avis - how can you be SO good in everything you do? The new look Dmitry Gudanov in the Wheeldon's piece - sensual and androgynous.

Best Production Overall Symphonic Variations
Best New Production
Best Revival Fancy Free (ABT)
Best Staging Ghosts (Kim Brandstrup/RDB)

Best Visiting Company Bolshoi
Best Male Dancer Jonathan Goddard
Best Female Dancer Marianela Nunez
Best Partnership Goddard/Peter Furness (Devil in the Detail/Alston)
Most Promising Male Tyrone Singleton
Most Promising Female Ekaterina Krysanova
Worst Production
Special Mention Best thing I saw all year: Nunez/Soares in Diamonds.

Other good things: the rise of Elena Glurjidze; seeing some of ABT's current and future stars (Stella Abrera especially); Yanowsky and Greve in Swan Lake; Jenna Lee (ENB) as Myrtha.

Disappointments: Tuckett's Seven Deadly Sins; La Scala; not seeing Kobborg as James, again; much of ABT's visit.

Eye-opener of the Year Watching how word-of-mouth turned the RDB's Kylian bill, poorly sold before it opened, into a completely sold-out hot ticket.

Most Promising Male STEVEN McRAE
Most Promising Female ELENA GLURDJIDZE
Worst Production LA SCALA's SLEEPING BEAUTY
Special Mention

The worse moment of this year was when Tanja Liedke's enormous talent was so cruelly cut short just as she was about to embark on the exciting new challenge of drecting her own company

The funniest has to be dancing with happy strangers to Swan Lake in Trafalgar Square one crisp January evening for 'Flock'

The most satisfying was both the eclecticism of the National Dance Awards and nominations for 2007 and the comparatively huge feast of ballet on mainstream TV

A happier goodbye was to Darcey Bussell who left the ballet stage with her audience wanting more.

Eye-opener of the Year A few exciting revelations: (1) South Korean hip-hop at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival

(2) The emergence of Christopher Wheeldon's new Company, Morphoses

(3) The wealth of conemporary dance talent saturating our dance scene

(4) The reopening of the Royal Festival Hall with 'Rites', an incredible fusion of light, music and dance

(5) The enormous potential of Sally Marie as a choreographer and company director

Best New Production Royal Ballet Jewels
Best Revival ENB Swan Lake
Best Staging Bolshoi Don Quixote
Best Home Company Royal Ballet
Best Visiting Company Bolshoi
Best Male Dancer Acosta (for Spartacus)
Best Female Dancer Marianela Nunez (but underused!)
Best Partnership Cojocaru and Kobborg (although we didn't see enough of it, unfortunately)
Most Promising Male Sergei Polunin - he has a great future!
Most Promising Female Natalia Osipova - she has so much still to learn but she is amazing to watch and she gets better all the time.
Worst Production La Scala Sleeping Beauty - never again please...
Special Mention I am not a fan of Ansanelli but I have to say my respect for her for putting her whole self into everything she does. She has difficulties fitting into the Royal Ballet mould because her training was so different but she is getting better and better and she is incredibly brave in my opinion to have a go at everything even if it's completely new to her!
Eye-opener of the Year Tamara Rojo: I always thought she is "patchy" - one night a brilliant performance, the next she looks like she would rather be somewhere else. However this year she has made so many brilliant, original, dramatic and beautiful performances in such a diverse range of roles that I think she can truthfully be called one of 2007's greatest dancers.

Worst Production In the Upper Room (ABT at SW)
Special Mention A bit unfair to vote for In the Upper Room, but basically, by the end, I was far too hot (high up in SW), I thoroughly disliked the noise, and as it dragged on, I really wanted to walk out for fear of passing out. Next time maybe. Loved Symphonie Concertante but the gala pieces were not memorable.

BRB's Stravinsky/Balanchine triple, coming, as it did, a week after Cyrano!!

Winter Dreams, Song of the Earth - best wishes and a big thank you to Darcey Bussell.

RB's new pieces on the main stage were a bit of a come-back-down-to-earth after 2006's Chroma and DGV.

Utter disaster of the year: not seeing Maria Alexandrova :-(

Eye-opener of the Year Bayadere's Shades by the corps of the... RB: superb.

BBC's screening of a 1960s' RB R&J; Suzanne Farrell on a 1970s' DVD - yes please and yes please again!

Special Mention Good, in no particular order: RB: Gary Avis in so many roles this year, most recently Drosselmeyer and Mr Fox; the Benjamin/Hristov/Watson cast in Song of the Earth, which rather got overlooked in all the fuss about Bussell's retirement, but which I thought was the superior cast; Alina Cojocaru in Theme and Variations; Tamara Rojo in La Bayadère, plus a special mention for the corps, who pulled off some extremely good Kingdom of the Shades scenes; Edward Watson (plus supporting cast) in (particularly the last performance of) Mayerling;

ENB's Elena Glurdjidze as Giselle, and also as Odette/Odile; Darcey Bussell in Winter Dreams at Sadler's Wells left me wishing she'd danced it like that back when she was dancing with Mukhamedov – what a sight that would have been; the Michael Clark Stravinsky triple bill at the Barbican;

ABT's David Hallberg, in a number of roles; Stuttgart Ballet's Friedemann Vogel in ENB's Swan Lake in the round, and even more so Alexander Zaitsev in Pierrot Lunaire with the RB, bringing something extra to the performances of all three dancers that we hadn't seen previously; the Bolshoi's Osipova and Vasiliev in Don Quixote – what more can I say? – also their corps in the Jardin Animé in Le Corsaire;

Bad: Belinda Hatley's retirement, but good to see her going out on a high – and taking on a major new role in Mayerling so late in her career; the absence of so many of the RB's leading men, for one reason or another, from their scheduled performances this year was cause for concern, even if it did give some lower-ranked dancers a chance they otherwise might not have had; disappointment at not getting to see the scheduled cast of Watson/Galeazzi in Romeo & Juliet after their performance together in Mayerling; missing out on Kobborg in Bournonville *again* :-(; Robert Parker's too-early retirement; still concern, at the Royal Ballet, about the limited number of more junior dancers getting substantial roles on-stage, meaning that when they have to "step up" to a major role unexpectedly they can look over-exposed, which is not fair on them either. There seem to be a few rungs missing on the career ladder; La Scala's Sleeping Beauty at the ROH: handsome production, but just not danced well enough, or with the sort of conviction it needs.

Middling: ABT's visit to London, so much looked forward to, was overall just, well, not quite as good as expected.

Eye-opener of the Year Edward Watson as Crown Prince Rudolf. I think even those of us who'd believed him fully capable of the role and/or who'd had the privilege of seeing the last scenes "up close and personal" in a marvellous insight evening beforehand must have been surprised at just how good he was.

Rupert Pennefather, who seems to have improved in leaps and bounds over the last 3 months; Ludovic Ondiviela has also made an impression in the last year, especially in Children of Adam and Symphonic Variations;

The Channel 4 programme "Strictly Bolshoi" was certainly an eye-opener;

The Bolshoi's Ivan Vasiliev – most 17-year-olds at the Royal Ballet School look like boys in comparison. I look forward to seeing him mature as a performer, and hope that his career will be guided intelligently.

Special Mention Seeing my first ballet (Alice in Wonderland by the ENB) was a great introduction to ballet for a ballet virgin

The great moment would be becoming hooked on ballet after seeing Giselle (and particularly the dance of the shades)

Continual wow - watching the Bolshoi perform in several shows

Most moving moment the opening 5 minutes of Emeralds in the Jewels by the Royal Ballet - that for me was the most sublime piece of ballet I've seen in 2007.

Most amusing moment, being inspired to take up ballet and doing adult beginners classes at the RAD Center :)

Eye-opener of the Year This year has be a year of continual eye openers as in my previous 30 odds year I had never seen a ballet performance or had the desire to go. Finally agreeing to go with my wife and finding a form of expression and artistic beauty that is wonderful to watch will always make 2007 a special year for me. Ending up with me lucky catching 11 ballets and taking classes, life will never be the same.
