As posted on our Postings pages... I agree very much with what you say - I too was a bit cautious too post, especially as I am not a huge fan of either dancer and I was afraid that maybe my judgement had been colored by that fact. But I was interested to see Marquez particularly in this role, since the reviews of her Juliet were so positive. On their own, they were both technically well in command of the roles. It may be the fact that they had not had adequate rehearsal time which contributed to the technical problems in the pdds, but for me also the problem was that they were not convicing in their portrayal because they didn't seem convinced themselves. For example, one key moment is the point where Manon is presented with the fur coat and the jewels... Here she must show something really clearly so that we understand how she was swayed, either that she is just fickle and cares more about jewels than love, or that she is impressionable. With Roberta you just saw something like, oh now she has some jewels, and because of that, it just didn't hold together - the story just didn't come to life. Regarding the pdds... I have to say that I was surprised, that considering Roberta and Ivan are such a regular partnership, they didn't seem very comfortable with each other. To be honest, I understand that they probably got placed together because of their heights, but I don't really think this partnership works. It doesn't seem to inspire either of them to new levels: for instance, Roberta really does seem to dance much better with Thiago and Johan. Ivan seemed quite tired at the end, which didn't help matters. ![]() © John Ross
Maloney was a little anonymous as Lescaut, but Gary Avis was a fantastic GM. There was some great dancing in the smaller roles, but altogether, the performance never really took off.
