As posted on our Postings pages... After having seen two Le Corsaire performances I came to a conclusion, IMHO, that the opening night took place tonight. The main characters have been resuscitated. Bouncy, stroppy, full-blooded Medora-Alexandrova was a girl worthy of all these fighting and plotting. She danced very well, with a great aplomb and teasing charm. And there was Conrad on stage this time – Nikolai Tsiskaridze. With all respect for Matvienko’s ability to do tricky jumps and turns, which is excellent for competitions and concert appearances, I don’t find him convincing in leading roles for one particular reason - his lack of stage presence. As a result he was indistinguishable among the bunch of pirates.
On the contrary, it was enough for Tsiskaridze just to make his first appearance on stage and you got an immediate cue who is the male lead here. It was a joy to see him fully recovered from his horrific injury and dancing with such gusto and ardour. In his second, shorter variation in the pdd he did those beautiful jumps, which he was usually doing in “The Legend of Love”. What a pity that Conrad’s dancing was abridged by Act 1 and in two following acts Tsiskaridze had to resort to acting, which he did very well appearing as a noble “knight of the seas” passionately in love with his Medora.

Sorry, Ian, you probably shed tears in your office, I know you wanted to see this cast.
And there was NO hiccup with the ship tonight – it did crack properly and cleaved in two.
