Dance Umbrella,
3 October to 10 November 2007
Season details

Thierry Bae

'Journal d'inquietude': Graham Watts

"This was one of the most compelling works I've seen in Dance Umbrella for a while, lasting more than 90 minutes without a break but never seeming to drag (in fact, I was disappointed when the film, which is full of Gallic irony and self-parody, ended)."

Amanda Miller-Pretty Ugly Tanz Koln

'Giselle - On Love and Other Difficulties': Ann Williams

"This was a puzzling show. Its message, if any, never became clear, but I found myself absorbed by it, and for me that's quite a significant plus."

Charles Linehan

'The Way Station, Happy Days' bill: Jane Simpson

"No sets, unglamorous street-clothes, the merest hint of a story, three dancers at most, and choreography based on a deliberately limited vocabulary: but if you adjust your brain and reset your expectations, there's a lot of pleasure to be found in this quiet country."

Michael Clark

'The Stravinsky Project': Bruce Marriott

"Clark is a mad professor and brilliant conjurer of movement, boldly stepping forward, and we are privileged to see his doodles. But if they were filtered and presented more coherently Clark would probably be seen as one of the greatest living choreographers."

'The Stravinsky Project': Norman Reynolds

"I have given only an outline and it is hard to say why, but one's final impression is one of great satisfaction. Only one more thing is needed, that it should tour extensively and not be allowed to fade away."

Russell Maliphant and Isaac Julien

'Cast No Shadow': Ann Williams

"If I had to flip a coin, I'd say that in this mixed media event, the film and video element comes out ahead of the dance element by a nose,- but only by a very, very small nose."

'Cast No Shadow': Jeffery Taylor

"A frustrating attempt to mix flesh and blood with ephemeral light waves, proving only it will never work."

Inbal Pinto Dance Company

'Shaker': Ann Williams

"What's unarguable is that Pinto is an able and inventive choreographer; even in this disappointing show she's done enough to make me curious about what she comes up with next."

Siobhan Davies Dance Company

'Two Quartets': Bruce Marriott

"Davies has an interesting process - if sadly it does not always result in interesting dance."

Alias Compagnie

'I want to go home': Graham Watts

"The end product was an hour's worth of largely fascinating dance theatre, albeit one which strangely failed to ignite in terms of getting anywhere near the intense psychological core of our collective insecurities."

Andreja Rauch

'Weavers': Helene Cooper

"Slavonic choreographer Andreja Rauch's recent GDA show provided an insight into human behaviour expressed as movement. ...this was a good night."

Ko Murobushi

'Quicksilver': Ann Williams

"At this point, I scribbled on my pad 'Lord, let this be over soon'..."

New Art Club

'The Visible Men': Lynette Halewood

"...the work at 70 minutes doesn't outstay its welcome, and underlying the slapstick humour is some subtle thinking about how we see – or don't see – the world."

'The Visible Men': Libby Costello

"The Visible Man felt like a departure from New Art Clubs comic micky take of the pretentious dance world, with a dry Northern wit that could make any Mancunian feel at home in London. The work was a one trick pony, with a central gimmick lacking in finesse."

Royston Maldoom

'Film - Rhythm Is It: Sacre du Printemps (Rite of Spring)': Charlotte Kasner

"Shakespeare's Troilus and Cressida begins and ends in the middle of the Trojan war and centres round characters peripheral to the conflict. Not much happens in between for two, long hours. Much the same could be said of Rhythm Is It."

Splintergroup Drama Theatre

'Roadkill': Ann Williams

"Unsettling, but fascinating."

Shen Wei Dance Arts

'Connect Transfer': Bruce Marriott

"Wei's dancers, when floor-based, are the most fluid creatures you can imagine: like mercury they seem to react to each other and unseen imperfections in the floor direct their random and quite mesmerizing, stop-start, travels."

Russian Reviews

Mariinsky Ballet

'Le Corsaire': Graham Watts

"On my second visit to this wonderful theatre in a few days, I remain sorry for dancers who give their all so expertly to an audience that contains many who care little for their safety or their art, as evidenced by the wanton flash photography, irritating chat and the substantial number of bright, digital 'phone and camera screens permanently in eyesight during the performance."

Diana Vishneva and the Mariinsky Ballet

'Silenzio Gala': Graham Watts

"As a gala, Vishneva and her collaborators have redefined the genre; as an event, it was stunning, spectacular and innovative, like nothing else I've ever seen in dance."

USA Reviews

Morphoses - The Wheeldon Company

'Morphoses' bill: Rachel Straus

"Wheeldon should revisit what made him name his company “Morphoses.” In that dance elements of choreography find their most raw and elegant expression. I'm not advocating that Wheeldon stick to abstract work, but more clarity from the young choreographer—who rallied 35 world-class dancers to help him launch the first London-New York based ballet company in history—would be very welcoming."

Joffrey Ballet

'Deuce Coupe' bill: Renee Renouf

"Energy has been a constant hallmark of Joffrey dancers, the company's magical accessibility quotient, along with a collective coherence which tempers highly indiosyncratic tendencies; those are disciplined by individual size and personal accomplishment."

Miami City Ballet

'Nine Sinatra Songs' bill: Renee Renouf

"Overall impression: good company, excellent dancers who deliver with zest, depending on the theme; the ballets chosen did not display known genuine individual talents."

Pennsylvania Ballet

'Company B' bill: Ellen Gaintner

"Pennsylvania Ballet is a small enough company that one gets to see the same dancers in everything. And they seem to take very well to contemporary choreography. Neenan's As It's Going received “Bravos” from the get-go."

Eiko and Koma

'Mourning': Rachel Straus

"Tan's ability to turn some damning sounds into an intriguing event is similar to Eiko & Koma's ability to transform the smallest movement into a fascination about being alive."

Akira Kasai

'Butoh America': Rachel Straus

"...reminded me of E.T. without the warmth. When he leaned against the tub like the Pietá, I let out an audible groan. Then I closed my eyes in fear of offending, as I had been offended."

Armitage Gone Dance

'Ligeti Essays, Time is the Echo of the Axe within a Wood' bill: Renee Renouf

"The works seemed as if Armitage had decided to explore polar opposites with a vengeance. I'm at a loss to say more, though all the elements were impeccably presented; I just may not be able to deduce correctly."

Smuin Ballet

'Stabat Mater' bill: Renee Renouf

"If Smuin Ballet continues in such a format, one can envision it will enjoy continued audiences; a sample is there for almost any taste."

Circo Zero

'Sol Niger': Renee Renouf

"...Sol Niger made its point, earned an ovation and left me remembering it as surreal as parts of current daily life."

Chitresh Das Dance Company

'India Jazz Progressions': Renee Renouf

"Das brought the first half to a close with some of his energetic turns and a dose of abhinaya relating to Shiva's destruction of the God of Love for having interrupted his meditation - a chance to show the different characters of Rati, the Goddess of Lust and Parvati, ultimately Shiva's consort, and the ill-fated God of Love, destroyed for having sent his arrow to disrupt Shiva's meditation on Mount Kailash."

French Reviews

Paris Opera Ballet

'Romeo and Juliet': Norman Reynolds

"Berlioz' symphony is a great work, full of beautiful melodies and rhythms and a variety of passages of quietness, sadness or peace, mixed with exuberant, joyful or again warlike ones. I feel that Sasha Waltz's choreographic treatment enhances it, bringing it to life. The result is a work one wants, one needs, to see more than once to take it all in."

Hong Kong Reviews

Hong Kong Ballet

'Cinderella': Kevin Ng

"The classical divertissements with the seasons fairies in Act 1 are pretty weak. The best parts of this production are fortunately in what counts the most, i.e. the pas de deux."

City Contemporary Dance Company

'Warrior Lanling': Natasha Rogai

"This is a powerful, atmospheric work which shows Tsao at his best as a choreographer. The four leads are all exceptional dancers, and Tsao has made effective use of their individual styles to highlight the different aspects of his hero's character - the performances by all four are superb."

Swiss Reviews

Bern Ballet

'Firebird' bill: Ian Palmer

"...for Bern she (Marston) has created a vision of The Firebird, using Stravinsky's score, but rejecting Fokine's scenario in favour of the fascinating and clear-told story centred around the mystical figure of Rasputin (whom she regards as a real-life Firebird) and his relations with the Imperial family."

Cuban Reviews

Ballet Nacional de Cuba

'Don Quixote pdd' bill: Preston Palon

"It was an evening consisting of seven short performances, from Bournonville to modern, designed to showcase the younger members of the company..."

Ballet Espanol de Cuba

'Ballet Espanol de Cuba': Preston Palon

"'m not a big flamenco enthusiast, and I wasn't familiar with the plot of Lorca's play, but these dancers are so good both technically and artistically that it was impossible not to pay attention."

Japanese Reviews

Tokyo Ballet

'The Dream': Naomi M

"Today was the debut of Steven McRae as Oberon, and he was just marvelous!"

English National Ballet

'The Snow Queen': Ian Palmer

"...the work looks set to be a box-office hit. If Corder could tighten the narrative and prune some of his choreography, I suspect it could be a critical hit as well."

Royal Ballet

'La Bayadere': Bruce Marriott

"What an absolutely cracking opening night the Royal had to its new season. La Bayadere is not usually one of those ballets that sets the pulse racing with eager anticipation but the company pulled out all the stops in Makarova's 1980's production and it shone as brightly as any major blockbuster."

'La Bayadere': Margaret Willis

"The Shades scene was sublime - the 24 ethereal beings descended one by one in perfect unison, ne'er a wobble or lowered leg amongst them. The whole company was on top form..."

'La Bayadere': Jeffery Taylor

"Conquering the “White Act” is the mark of a ballerina in its truest sense and Marquez's success was dazzling and unequivocal. Helped by Putrov's steady and gracious partnering, Marquez's technique was diamond sharp and way beyond normal, every savagely simple step fuelled by passion and shaped by her desire to make the most of every detail. A breathtaking display."

'La Bayadere': Wulff

"Tamara Rojo's Nikiya was both emotionally touching and technically near-faultless."

'La Bayadere': Simonetta Dixon

"The Corps performed a beautiful Shades scene (I only wish there were more than half a ramp onstage), confidently led out by Yuhui Choe..."

'Romeo and Juliet': Lynette Halewood

"For the fans, a crowded house keenly anticipated the debut of the Royal's rising star Steven McRae as Romeo at this performance, replacing the injured Johan Kobborg to partner Alina Cojocaru. We know he is a spectacularly gifted soloist, but Romeo demands much more in acting and partnering terms than beautiful steps. It was a very accomplished debut, a very young, larky, laddish Romeo, completely knocked sideways emotionally by the force of love."

'Romeo and Juliet': Wulff

"Steven McRae's debut as Romeo was quite remarkable, showing that not only is he highly accomplished technically, with beautiful line, speed and precision throughout, but that he is capable of mastering the difficult partnering required of the role and giving a well thought out and convincing interpretation."

'Romeo and Juliet': Simonetta Dixon

"The balcony scene was danced with assurance and abandon, and McRae's partnering of a sparkling, on-form Alina Cojocaru was very impressive for a debut in this difficult piece. His dancing was superb all night."

Carlos Acosta

'Munecos' bill: Jeffery Taylor

"Carlos Acosta was in charitable mode last week at Sadler's Wells. In a thoroughly commendable move, and this boy really nurtures his Cuban roots, he gave his country's national ballet dancers a London outing. He probably regrets it this morning."

'Munecos' bill: Graham Watts

"Acosta set out to introduce London to a great Cuban choreographer; but, in framing that work with snippets of his own, he may well have identified the potential for another."

Hofesh Shechter

'In Your Rooms, Uprising' bill: Ian Palmer

"Certainly gifted, Shechter is a choreographer I just cannot “get”. His career seems to lie ahead of him paved with gold, and the absence of me from his fan club will hardly divert him from that path."

Birmingham Royal Ballet

'Strictly Dancing': Jeffery Taylor

Daphnis: "But it is the ensemble that makes this production special. They dance with an innate feel for Ashton's intention and the music's soul, cool, precise, harmonious and knowing."

'Strictly Dancing': Lynette Halewood

"BRB's Artistic Director David Bintley entitled this triple bill “Strictly Dancing” which was presumably in an effort to pull in some custom on the back of the BBC's ever popular Strictly Come Dancing ...But the mix of works on the bill didn't really play up to that populist agenda, and the combination was a slightly odd one where the different items didn't seem to fit together entirely comfortably. But there were some fine performances and many individual moments to enjoy."

'Edward II': Charlotte Kasner

"Ballet is often stuck with its image of pinkness and glitter, but Bintley shows us that ballet is for life, not just for Christmas."

'Edward II': Ian Palmer

"...it is dance drama of vivid and exceptional worth, whose heritage lies in the English lyrical tradition of Ashton, whom Bintley adores and in the German strain which Macmillan (and later Cranko) developed in Stuttgart."

Northern Ballet Theatre

'The Nutcracker': Ian Palmer

"Everything here is right: its honouring of Tchaikovsky, its bewitching sense of fantasy, its dance sparkling with classical invention. In its truth and its simplicity it is one of the best Nutcrackers in the land ...and for Nixon himself it represents the zenith of his NBT career thus far."

'The Nutcracker': Jeffery Taylor

"Nixon has magically conjured the perfect Christmas treat. Packed with dancing by an enthusiastic, versatile company rising to every challenge thrown at them, The Nutcracker hoists NBT up yet another notch. ...the result is a triumph."

'Romeo and Juliet': Ian Palmer

"On the balcony, with Romeo, she (Chiaki Nagao) pours out her emotion in long soliloquy; with Lord and Lady Capulet she pents it up in rigid silence, and then in the tomb she releases it in silent howls of sorrow and anguish. It is a remarkable performance to place in that balletic memory bank and with it I offer thanks for her marvellous career."

'Romeo and Juliet': Janet McNulty

" Chiaki Nagao's last performance: "The performance itself was wonderful but passed so quickly. At the end, she was greeted with a unanimous standing ovation from the audience, a flower shower and presentations. David Nixon made another moving speech celebrating her career. There was not a dry eye in the house."

Green Box Productions

'Black Maria': Bruce Marriott

"I was struck more by the original attempt to present theatre and I hope the team try the approach on other stories and refine it further. It's the thinking person's kids' show and I guess your response will depend on how much you, and your "little devils", want to think in the theatre."

Lost Dog

'No Idea': Jeffery Taylor

"Beautifully orchestrated aimlessness, highly individual and thoroughly entertaining." (part of Place Touch Wood season)

Liz Lea

'Quicksilver': Jeffery Taylor

"...a deeply felt fusion of Asian and contemporary dance." (part of Place Touch Wood season)

Wendy Houstoun

'A Kind of Karaoke - no.2': Jeffery Taylor

"...billed as a choreographer and didn't dance a step." (part of Place Touch Wood season)

European Ballet

'Coppelia': Richard Amey

"Stanislav Tchassov has produced a satisfying and entertaining full-length choreographic reworking."

Vortex Dance Theatre - Paula Conduit

'Clique, Dross' bill: TomokoA

"The group is in the process of developing and it really has so much potential, and they deserve a much wider audience. I wish them good luck, and would encourage any dance goer however classically tasted to see them whenever the opportunity arises."

The ballet.co Screensaver

What professional site would be complete without a screensaver! Courtesy of Louis we bring you the ballet.co screensaver and its absolutely free.

You need to be running Windows 95 and we can deliver it in 2 ways depending on if you have the capability to handle zip files (or not). Zip files are smaller and hence load much quicker, but you need special software to decode them. If you are not sure best to use the larger exe file.

Once its on your machine, double click on install.exe, it will tell you the screensaver is installed, then go into the control panel, double click on display and follow your nose to the screensaver section where you should find our ballet one listed. Here are the links to get the screensaver;

ballet.co screensaver as an zip file (1132Kb)
ballet.co screensaver as an exe file (2293kb)

These are not small files and might take more than a few minutes to load. The screensaver has been produced using professional software and as such should work on all (Windows95) machines. We can't however offer guarantees (though we would be gob-smacked if there are any probs). Enjoy!
