Roberto Bolle, Goodwill Ambassador since 1999, has often devoted some of his performances or pdd to Unicef. For the 60th anniversary of the creation of Unicef Italy he promoted a gala at the Auditorium Conciliazione. The revenue of the sale of the tickets was meant to finance a project of education in Sudan, so that prices were higher than usual. In the audience the groups of young students or balletgoers were missing, on the contrary many celebrities of show, sports and politics attended, beside the President of the Italian Republic with his wife.

The program conceived for this gala was quite unusual. Petipa was completely missing and beside the opening pdd from “La Sylphide”, all the other items were choreographies created in the 20th century. After the light jumps of POB Emmanuel Thibault in a superb pairing with Myriam Ould-Braham, much appreciated by the audience, there was the first appearance of Roberto Bolle. For the second time he interpreted the solo and the bedroom pdd from Petit’s “Carmen” partnering Polina Semionova from Berlin State Ballet. In this version Don José isn’t only the seduced but also the seducer and the game between the two dancers was very intringuing. Another couple of POB dancers presented Kylian’s “Nuages”. While Eleonora Abbagnato was perfect in the spiralling moves, Hervé Moreau looked a little less at ease. An expected success was the following solo From Béjart’s “Arepo” danced by POB Alessio Carbone. He’s so in tune with Béjart’s roles one could easily believe they were created on him. The pdd form MacMillan’s “Romeo and Juliet”, well danced by RB principals Tamara Rojo and Federico Bonelli, lacked sparkle and was the title that got less applause in the evening. The first half closed with Ashton’s “Sylvia”. It was probably the last time that Darcey Bussell danced a choreography by Ashton and what a farewell it was! No less exalting was Bolle’s Aminta.

The second half of the gala was even more successful, with a passionate Hervé Moreau partnering a moving Aurélie Dupont in Neumeier’s “The Lady of the Camellias”. An energetic trio dazzled in Forsythe’s “In the middle somewhat elevated”: Darcey Bussell, Roberto Bolle and LSB Sabrina Brazzo showed great speed in spins and jumps and great daring and strength in the angular lifts. Fantastic performance of Eleonora Abbagnato and Alessio Carbone in Petit’s “L’Arlesienne”. Brilliant technique from Myriam Ould-Braham and Emmanuel Thibault in Gsovsky’s “Grand Pas Classique” even if not superior to that shown by the Kirov couple in Milan at the Gala des étoiles. I wonder why Thibault changed his steps in the coda. In the last pdd, Kylian’s “Petite mort”, Roberto Bolle partnered for the first time Aurélie Dupont (his 50-something ballerina!) and the couple worked so well that I hope to see it again in the future.
