Ballet.co at the Edinburgh Festival...

Suzanne Farrell Ballet and National Ballet of Canada

'Don Quixote': Ian Palmer

"...we are obliged to conclude that this Don Quixote should be allowed to rest in peace."

Grupo de Rua de Niteroi

'H2' bill: Ian Palmer

" H2: "...struck me as his most refreshing, challenging and ultimately most satisfying work presented in Edinburgh."

Scottish Ballet

'Agon' bill: Ian Palmer

"Scotland is lucky to have them."

Alarmel Valli and Madhavi Mudgal

'Samanvaya': Ian Palmer

"Two stars fell from the heavens and landed in Edinburgh on Monday night. Their names are Alarmel Valli and Madhavi Mudgal. Both dressed in saris of exquisite texture and colour, they appear like jewels worn by the Maharajas and Nawabs of centuries past."

Nederlands Dance Theatre

'Silent Screen' bill: Bruce Marriott

"Lightfoot and Leon can make me laugh but when they get serious the heavy theatrical props get in the way and I'm lost in a general fog of extraneous 'stuff'. It would be nice to see them strip right back and just communicate using bodies on a stage."

Liss Fain Dance

'The Line Between Day and Night' bill: Graham Watts

"...mature professionalism, fliud movement and poetic musicality of an excellent little company which stands neatly at the apex of contemporary and classical dance."

'The Unknown Land': Ian Palmer

"I was fascinated by Fain's approach to the score (which was Ligeti's Piano Concerto), the way she can at times follow the complex rhythmical patternings..."

Michael Popper

'Unbounded': Ian Palmer

"Popper's sinuous body is exposed to various and multi-angled light, revealing lithe movement and extraordinary muscularity, yet cloaking it with a sense of hidden danger, of unstoppable power."

Iskander Dance Company

'El Saqiyeh': Ian Palmer

"It was the sense of freedom which ran through Iskander Dance Company's beautiful El Saqiyeh, which translates as "the Waterwheel"..."

Curve Foundation

'Beyond Prejudice': Ian Palmer

"By far the most classical of the works presented, it takes the vocabulary, the five positions, and uses them as a spring board into ballet subversion, of street style, of tango..."

Karl Jay-Lewin

'It's About Time': Ian Palmer

"Words could not do justice to the inutterable tedium of this piece..."

American Repertory Ensemble

'Dialogues 2006': Graham Watts

"I am just so glad that I happened to be in the right place at the right time to catch this new company's world-debut performance. I can be sure that it will be planning, not serendipity, that will renew the acquaintance."

Cie Didier Theron

'En Forme': Ian Palmer

"...decidedly limited and un-sophisticated dance vocabulary."

Siyaya

'Thatha': Ian Palmer

"But it's all rather the same and it's all rather saccharine. I couldn't help longing for something a bit more serious, something a little bit tragic."

Burklyn Youth Ballet

'Aladdin': Ian Palmer

"There is no greater cure for a hang-over than ballet. I discovered this half way through Burklyn Youth Ballet's lovely performance of Aladdin, which (aided by strong coffee and a couple of paracetemol) I attended at the un-godly hour of ten-thirty on a Sunday morning."

Ningyo Circus

'The Crime of Miss Debuko Ohyama': Ian Palmer

"The Crime of Miss Debuko Ohyama is that it was ever put on at all and that unwitting members of the public should be expected to pay money to see it. Awful."

Mosaico Flamenco

'Alba Flamenca': Ian Palmer

"Of the two dancers, once possesses that rare and remarkable Andalucian spirit. She has an incredibly regal, southern face, over which she charts a whole kaleidoscope of human emotions. She seems to see the flamenco as driven from the floor, as a great heat rising upwards to burn her heart."

Choreographers Showcase

'33rd International Choreographers' Showcase': Graham Watts

"...so long as you can put up with the inevitable duds, it provides a great opportunity to experience the raw power of movement across a variety of dance forms, up very close and personal..."

Danny Tan

'33rd International Choreographers' Showcase: Providence': Graham Watts

"Top of the tree was 'Providence', an innovative and enjoyable solo ... with an emphasis on Chinese movement and music."

Christopher Hutching

'33rd International Choreographers' Showcase: Morning': Graham Watts

"Very much in the MacMillan genre (and certainly not out of place in a 'Romeo & Juliet' narrative context), the duet effectively utilized the large space and was studded with strong lifts and holds..."

USA Reviews

San Francisco Ballet

'Sylvia': Eric Taub

"I saw only one of Sylvia's three performances, but it was enough to leave me utterly charmed. Morris doesn't take it upon himself to revamp Sylvia's thin story. He tells it with a certain modern perspective, but free of hip irony or condescension..."

'SFB at Stern Grove': Renee Renouf

"San Francisco Ballet returned to Stern Grove August 13 after a year's hiatus because of its appearance in the Paris Festival July 2005. While the day was largely grey, the program was one of the most varied in memory..."

Bay Area Rhythm Exchange

'2006 Bay Area Rhythm Exchange': Renee Renouf

"It was a pas de onze, if you include dapper Arthur Duncan who dominated the second half of this third annual Bay Area Rhythm Exchange, following the non-profit Stepology's Tap Festival Instructional Workshop."

City Ballet of San Diego

'Ballet at Twilight: L'Arlesienne Suite, Giselle Act II': Anjuli Bai

"...the evening presented an opportunity for young dancers to dance, for an audience regardless of sophistication and economic wherewithal, to view dance in a beautiful, though difficult, venue. I am looking forward to City Ballet's upcoming season."

French Reviews

Paris Opera Ballet

'Lady of the Camelias' and Behjart bills: Sheila Cross

"Contrasted programming at the end of the Paris Opera Ballet's season once again demonstrated the company's artistic range. Whilst one part of the company, at the Opera Bastille, confronted the contortions and challenges of Bejart, the Garnier contingent luxuriated in the romantic lyricism of Neumeier..."

Danish Reviews

Danish Dance Theatre

'Copenhagen Summerdance06': Gunild Pak Symes

"The ensemble work of the dancers of Danish Dance Theatre showed brightly in Rushton's three group works. The company has truly come into its own with performers working together in sensitive harmony, genuine comedic rapport and sublime spirituality."

Carte Blanche

'Copenhagen Summerdance06: Virus, Love': Gunild Pak Symes

"Opening the show was the electrifying black and white work, “Virus”, by celebrated Israeli choreographer Naharin..."

Swedish Royal Ballet

'Copenhagen Summerdance06: Chinese Objects': Gunild Pak Symes

"Dancers from the Royal Swedish Ballet gave strong performances in collaboration with their Danish counterparts in Leinonen's “Chinese Objects”. There is no question that these dancers are beautifully trained."

Japanese Reviews

K Ballet

'Summer Triple Bill': Satoko Kamatani

" la Mort: "Kumakawa's performance was amazing, his piruettes and jumps were just a sharp razor or knife, exactly Japanese sword that was swung down to make a figure of crescent. His young man seemed to have a reasoning power, however, reason gradually melted and collapsed from the inside of himself."

Hong Kong Reviews

Hong Kong Ballet

'Cinderella': Natasha Rogai

"The company was on good form, and it was an interesting indication of the new regime to see some hitherto less-used dancers sparkling in solo roles..."

UK Reviews

The
Bolshoi
Ballet

in
London

'The Bright Stream': Jane Simpson

"No wonder Alexei Ratmansky was offered the directorship of the Bolshoi Ballet. In The Bright Stream he had made them that most rare and enviable thing, a ballet which is not only a popular and critical success, but also could only be theirs."

'Cinderella': Lynette Halewood

"It would be interesting to see if a different cast could deliver a more involving and engrossing performance. Possokhov is not short of imagination or inventiveness but the work comes across as vaguely ironic and detached, and lacking in warmth."

'Don Quixote, Pique Dame bill': Jeffery Taylor

"Osipova is not just a beautifully trained virtuoso technician but an artist whose desire to radiate the joy of young Kitri comes from Natalia and nowhere else. What you see is what you get."

'Don Quixote': Bruce Marriott

"Wonderful then to report that it got a whole bunch better as Natalia Osipova, the 20 year old girl only 2 years in the company and increasingly talked of, stepped out and let glorious bloody rip. ... All up it was one of those nights that makes you so happy to be alive."

'Don Quixote': Marike van Aerde

"Exuberance, spirit, passion and bursting energy; no other words would be fit to describe the Bolshoi's final performance of their season in Covent Garden. They gave us a 'Don Quixote' that not only showcased their brilliant skill and technique, but likewise gave living proof of their true passion and love for their every leap and twirl."

'Pique Dame bill': Ian Palmer

"To watch Pique Dame, which Roland Petit created for Nikolai Tsiskaridze in 2001, is, I imagine, what it was like to watch Paganini playing on his Stradavarius. Petit has gifted Tsiskaridze a role which investigates every facet of this dancer's thrilling artistry."

'Pique Dame bill': Marike van Aerde

"No review or comment about a performance by the Bolshoi, one believes, could commence without praise for their outstanding technique."

'Swan Lake': Jeffery Taylor

" Zakharova: "Grigorovich should count himself lucky indeed that his dreary account of Swan Lake is single handedly redeemed by so great a dancer."

'Swan Lake': Graham Watts

"Even if you feel that you have closed the book on a ballet that has been done to death, here is a version that still deserves to be seen."

'Swan Lake': John Mallinson

"This is the second time that the Bolshoi have brought this Swan Lake to London. May it be the last."

'The Pharaoh's Daughter': Ian Palmer

"What it is to spend a whole day in the company of The Pharaoh's Daughter! Her Technicolor frocks (and let's face it, there are more costume changes than a Shirley Bassey concert) are matched by Technicolor choreography which is a veritable fiesta of dance styles and language."

'The Pharaoh's Daughter': Charlotte Kasner

"Pierre Lacotte's reworking of Petipa for the Bolshoi strikes just the right note of irreverance to make it valid for today's audience, camping it up just enough for it not to appear too ridiculous."

Mariinsky Ballet

'The Golden Age': Robert Long

"I can only hope Noah D Gelber is not too put off by the ungracious critical reception. ... I think Monica Mason should grab this guy, put him on a two year contract, tell him to rest for at least the first three months, then look at some RB classics that could do with a dusting down."

Carlos Acosta

'Tocororo - a Cuban Tale': Bruce Marriott

"Despite my problem with Tocororo I hope Acosta does more shows - like the Sadler's one particularly, but if they are 'dancicals' then I think he needs to involve people with more West End or Broadway experience."

Brasil Brasileiro

'Brasil Brasileiro': Jeffery Taylor

"A sunburst of a nation's popular culture in song and dance, the evening is so packed with beautiful and talented people having an unmitigated blast, you're sorry you're not Brazilian."

'Brasil Brasileiro': Graham Watts

"The spirit of Brazil has temporarily conquered Islington for a month and the samba, bossa- nova and capoeira now rule at Sadler's Wells."

Trafalgar Square Festival - Cathy Marston

'Spell': John Mallinson

"The work was most enjoyable but the spell would have been more powerful under other circumstances."

Trafalgar Square Festival - Akademi

'Awaz': John Mallinson

"This was an ambitious look at the life of Asian women leaving India, coming to Britain and struggling to succeed."

Trafalgar Square Festival - Expressive Feat

'Return Journey': John Mallinson

"The effects were elegant if constrained in scope."

Trafalgar Square Festival - Gisele Edwards

'Vem - Beyond Loneliness': John Mallinson

"Another award-winning circus performer...wearing a tutu and, remarkably, singing the while."

The ballet.co Screensaver

What professional site would be complete without a screensaver! Courtesy of Louis we bring you the ballet.co screensaver and its absolutely free.

You need to be running Windows 95 and we can deliver it in 2 ways depending on if you have the capability to handle zip files (or not). Zip files are smaller and hence load much quicker, but you need special software to decode them. If you are not sure best to use the larger exe file.

Once its on your machine, double click on install.exe, it will tell you the screensaver is installed, then go into the control panel, double click on display and follow your nose to the screensaver section where you should find our ballet one listed. Here are the links to get the screensaver;

ballet.co screensaver as an zip file (1132Kb)
ballet.co screensaver as an exe file (2293kb)

These are not small files and might take more than a few minutes to load. The screensaver has been produced using professional software and as such should work on all (Windows95) machines. We can't however offer guarantees (though we would be gob-smacked if there are any probs). Enjoy!
