Laura Morera and Thiago Soares for learning and performing wonderfully the roles of Tatiana and Onegin at such short notice.
Eye-opener of the Year Putrov in Prodigal, Onegin Giselle, Spectre... everything! He did all his roles with such depth of feeling and strong acting. His technique was'nt bad either!! The royal ballet in 'les Noces' were brilliant , so powerful and together . Les Noces is an amazing ballet that creates such striking images.

Best Production Overall RB Giselle & ENB's touring Swan Lake
Best New Production can't think - NOT RB Cinderella
Best Revival Daphnis & Chloe
Best Staging Swan Lake (ENB - proscenium-arch version)
Best Home Company Royal Ballet
Best Visiting Company Bolshoi, I suppose - didn't see many
Best Male Dancer Johan Kobborg - just about
Best Female Dancer Miyako Yoshida
Best Partnership Cojocaru/Kobborg
Most Promising Male Easy - Thiago Soares
Most Promising Female More difficult - Lauren Cuthbertson, I think
Worst Production Forgotten the worst one, but bits of Ballet Preljocaj's "Near Life Experience" were pretty excruciating
Special Mention Hmm, not an easy year to pick obvious "bests", I don't think, and I'm sure I've missed a lot out, but here are some of the high points for me: BRB's mini tours reaching the parts other companies don't reach; Improvement in RB's mixed bill programming; Disappointing to see so little of ENB this year, but at least their Swan Lake at the Albert Hall was much more convincing than last time around, and I actually enjoyed it a lot; Good to see a promising RBS choreographer in Liam Scarlett; An Evening of British Ballet and Out of Denmark - good to see RB dancers branching out into this sort of thing, and wish Dance Bites had been that enjoyable; Glad to see that Scottish Ballet appear to be doing well under Ashley Page; Very much enjoyed "Soldier's Tale" in the Linbury; Henri Oguike Company: hadn't seen them before, but really enjoyed both the dancers and the choreography. Some lovely performances by Laura Morera in most of the roles I've seen her dance this year. Bad: the withdrawal of Tamara Rojo from "Onegin" - extremely disappointing, as I had the chance to see her in rehearsal, and none of the other casts matched her. Bad: yet *another* substantial price hike at the ROH, although at least triple bills have come down in price.
Eye-opener of the Year Fortunately it wasn't literally one, although a couple of inches lower and it could have been, but quite scary to realise, during Ed Watson's second performance as Romeo, just how potentially dangerous stage sword-fighting can be. Marvellous character artists from the Bolshoi - often better than some of the classical dancers! Balanchine: despite watching numerous performances before, I'd never really taken to either Agon or Symphony in C, but watching them from upstairs in the amphi this year I saw them in a completely new light. Ivan Putrov: by his third performance of Le Spectre de la Rose I thought he'd really "got" the role in a way I hadn't seen other dancers manage before, and he also made an excellent, vulnerable and moving Prodigal Son. Anastasia: on my first few viewings of this ballet, I'd grown to like it as a 3-acter, but this time round I became much more aware of how much padding there is, and that the 3rd act would be much more effective standing on its own (even the new, amended version, which I didn't like as much). I'd like to see Monica Mason bring it back into the rep as a one-acter, preferably before various of the current interpreters retire!

The harem in Zelensky's Sheherezade at the Albert Hall and the entire cast exiting tghe Stage Door clutching the props. The role of the 'fence' in The Prodigal Son.

Best Female Dancer Aurelie Dupont
Best Partnership Legris & Ludieres; Hilaire & Romoli
Most Promising Male
Most Promising Female Aurore Cordellier (POB)
Worst Production Pavane; Glacial Decoy (POB)
Special Mention Balanchine Centenary was well served by both sides of the chunnel, I thought, particularly seeing POB's take on Mr. B's works turned a mind-blowing experience - it was the personal highlight of the season. Other dancers who brightened up my days were: The one & only Uliana Lopatkina in a divine form as tormented heroine, Nikiya, partnered by Igor Zelensky, who was a golden Apollo in the same gala; ever so radiant Diana Vishneva in Ratmansky's Cinderella in Tokyo; Vladimir Malakhov's eerie & unforgettable Le Spectre de la rose in Benois gala; Acosta & Guillem's Prodigal Son, a thrilling combination of fire & ice; two of delightful & exceptional danseurs noble who were good at everything they did - Sergey Filin of Bolshoi & Jose Martinez of POB; POB's newest etoile Mathieu Ganio, clearly blessed with a gift to become a tremendous ballet star of the next generations despite a much controversial promotion drama; the last but not the least - Bolshoi's irreplaceable corps & character dancers, who renewed my passions and faith in classical ballets.
Eye-opener of the Year Maurice Bejart - Seeing revivals of his work "Le Chant du Compagnon Errant" danced by two of the finest male talent today, Hilaire & Legris, and "Lumiere", the documentary film featuring the long interview with him, once again fuelled my desire to know this choreographer and see his works more. Also my heartfelt thanks to NFT, whose summer showings introduced to me late Anton Dolin, "the first British danseur noble of the 20th century" - what a character! I felt ashamed not having known him all this time.....

Special Mention When Federico Bonelli had to take over from Johann Kobberg - I think he and Alina Cojacaru pulled out all the stops after what must have been a very difficult changeover, in 'Sleeping Beauty'.
Eye-opener of the Year The nature of ballet, due to Mayerling - never seen it before and it was a terrifying psychological drama which indeed the actual event was, but to see it all danced - I would not have believed that ballet could translate it so well. I went home cold and emotionally drained.

Special Mention Zenaida Yanowski's Empress Elizabeth in Mayerling (and her Siren in Prodigal Son). Ran Miyako very close for my fave female dancer. Symphony in C - I was completely new to it, and just when I thought it couldn't get any better - it did! The 4th Movement is an unabashed joy! Les Noces in Covent Garden - didn't get it at all first time I saw it (was expecting to see more of Zen dancing as the principal lead), but the more I thought about it, by the time I saw it the second time, I was smitten.
Eye-opener of the Year Ed and Lauren's R&J @ Covent Garden, and their Qualia @ The Orchard in Dartford, made me realise you don't have to have the superstars performing to REALLY enjoy a ballet (though have the feeling they may become the next superstars). Zen's comic turn in A Soldier's Tale. Ballerinas aren't all ice maidens after all!! :¬)

Worst Production I didn't like NBT Swan Lake very much ...
Special Mention Daria Pavlenko's lovely arms in La Bayadere, Roberta Marquez's charming Aurora, Jonathan Cope and Tamara Rojo's rivetting performance in Mayerling and Svetlana Zakharova's STUNNING Odile ...
Eye-opener of the Year Ivan Putrov's dramatic depth, Alina Cojocaru's tremendous Tatiana in Onegin Act III- I had my doubts but she blew me away completely, the Bolshoi's Nina Kaptsova- what a lovely dancer whom I had not seen before this summer but she was an absolute joy to watch as Cupid and in the pas de trois

Best Production Overall RB's R&J due to great performances.
Best New Production Nothing to write home about.
Best Revival Les Patineurs (RBS).
Best Staging
Best Home Company Royal Ballet.
Best Visiting Company Bolshoi, by default more than anything.
Best Male Dancer Ivan Putrov.
Best Female Dancer Zenaida Yanowsky.
Best Partnership Cojocaru & Kobborg.
Most Promising Male Thiago Soares.
Most Promising Female Lauren Cuthbertson, the next great Giselle.
Worst Production Bolshoi's R&J, although the much-praised RB quadruple bill ran it close. And there was some rubbish in the Benois Gala. And...
Special Mention September 2003 saw Johan Kobborg's wonderful Out of Denmark show in London. The highlight being the extraordinary performances of Fleming Flindt's The Lesson, a perfect cast (Kobborg, Cojocaru and Yanowsky) in a remarkable ballet. Now that really was a raw sensory experience, no hype necessary.
Eye-opener of the Year Remarkable R&J's from Watson & Cuthbertson. I wasn't sure he had it in him - I was wrong. Putrov and Marquez in Giselle finally showed a physical and sexy side of the story, and in fact Putrov shone all year - he is now the real deal in terms of acting and stage presence. And he still has entrechats to make your jaw hit the ground. The best combination of Russian and English techniques around.

Worst Production SB's 'Nutcracker'. Didn't care much for this new production. May however decide to see it again this year if Paul Liburd gets to dance the Nut!
Special Mention Saddest performance: Rambert's Triple bill 'Mahler' with the RSNO at the Playhouse. I last saw 'Dark Elegies' revived sometime after the Dumblane massacre. The coincidental timing this time with events in Ossetia made it almost too much to bear.
Eye-opener of the Year Has to be the Lazarus-like recovery of Scottish Ballet. Looking great in everything so far (despite my comments re Nutcracker). Previous AD made the mistake of making his own stuff too big a proportion of the total (rather small) repertory. Hope the current AD won't do the same.

Special Mention Donald Macleary's coaching of RB dancers Alina Cojocaru and Martin Harvey (Johann was injured) in a Mayerling Masterclass. Donald let's the dancers complete a whole section before going over everything with them and correcting them, so that when they try again you can really see the improvements - and they were already exceptional ! Also, Jose Martin rehearsing as The Jester in a Cinderella Masterclass with Wendy Ellis-Soames coaching - his technique was eye-watering !
Eye-opener of the Year Svetlana Zacharova dancing Swan Lake - I had heard such great things but the reality - including those thirty-two immaculate fouttes - was astounding. A real Summer treat.

Special Mention Zakharova's stunning shapes Yoshida's exhileratingly articulate feet Acosta in the fabulously camp lavendar outfit as the spirit of rose
Eye-opener of the Year Performances of Ballet Music: RB has so much repertoire involving difficult (and sublime) piano parts. They ought to hire someone who can play this music properly... It makes such a difference. Hope someone will mention this to SG when she does M&A next year. Also, how wonderful would it be if we could have a real pianist for Rhapsody and Symphonic Variations!!! POB =desperately= needs a better orchestra. The ROH Orchestra has been a star most of the season this year--which was most definitely not the case 10 years ago when they played in the new RB Bayadere DVD with AA and IM.

Eye-opener of the Year Martha Graham company, London, November '03. I'd only ever seen bits of the archival footage on television. These performances made me see why she is so important. And she did have a sense of humour.

Best Partnership Between Kobborg& Cojocaru, and Lauren Cuthbertson & Edward Watson.
Most Promising Male Edward Watson
Most Promising Female Lauren Cuthbertson
Worst Production Bolshoi Swan Lake (mostly the anti-climatic ending)
Special Mention Ed Watson and Lauren Cuthbertson in RB R&J... 1st time i've been left in tears at the end of any ballet, the story seemed so fresh and powerful with renewed insight into the characters emotions, down to two amazing performances (which managed to get me hooked on ballet all over again). Seeing Tamara Rojo in R&J, showing how mcuh drama can play a part in dance. ENB Swan Lake, not just for the spectacle but for the sheer quality of dancing by Edur&Oaks. Bruce Sanson's 'Evening in British Ballet', new works i loved, and my first Ballet open-air performance!
Eye-opener of the Year Deidre Chapman, in everything i saw her in i was very impressed. The ability of RB dancers to pick up a totally new role, learn it in a really short space of time, and then give an astounding performance. Hoe much the RB tickets are, and how much the cost adds up after a while (just ask my Dad about that one)

Special Mention Special mention should be made of the way the Paris Opera Ballet appears to be jettisoning it's classical past in favour of purely contemporary works. The huge corps de ballet will be virtually redundant next season and there is great disquiet among the ranks as to the company's future. A change of policy and/or leadership is urgently needed.

Most Promising Male Thiago Soares

Worst Production Cinderella (I can't help thinking Ashton would be turning in his grave at the thought of Dowell and Sleep cavorting around as the Uglies)
Special Mention (1) Irek Mukhamedov for his phenomenal performance of Rudolf, and the carpet of flowers that greeted his curtain calls. (2) Edward Watson in the second of his performances of 'Romeo and Juliet', (an all too brief display of one of the best talents the RB has - please when will we see more??!!) (3) Antonion Pappano conducting the Four Temperaments etc. Never have I heard a ballet orchestra so good, and there was a wonderful sensation of total unity between stage an pit.
Eye-opener of the Year The fact that in spite of myriad injuries at the end of the season, the RB was able to unravel a series of lower-ranked, yet amazing talents, for Onegin. All of whom, I believe, learnt their roles in a matter of a week or two.

I even managed to convert a few of my friends to ballet! His diary on ballet.co was also very interesting and eye-opening (this nearly went into the next category for that reason!)
Eye-opener of the Year Broken Fall - I had never imagined that such things were possible, and it was also my first viewing of the (unbelievably strong) Ballet Boyz. Never before I have experienced so may emotions at the same time - exhilarating and spine-tingling. I have the utmost admiration for the dancers as it is clearly really quite dangerous!

Best Staging Rosas's "Rain" by Anna Teresa de Keersmaker
Best Home Company New York City Ballet

Best Male Dancer Manuel Legris
Best Female Dancer Alina Cojocaru and Sofiane Sylve
Best Partnership Manuel Legris and Aurelie Dupont, Silvia Azzoni and Alexander Riabko (Hamburg Ballet principals)
Most Promising Male Herve Moreau and Mallory Gaudion of POB, Herman Cornejo of ABT
Most Promising Female Dorothee Gilbert of POB, Ashley Bouder of NYCB, Shoko Nakamura of Vienna State Opera Ballet, Yao Wei of the Royal Danish Ballet
Worst Production ABT's Swan Lake by Kevin McKenzie
Special Mention When Cojocaru first guested with ABT in La Bayadere in their summer season of 2003, I had found THE classical ballerina I was looking for. She was definitely the biggest highlight of the 2003-2004 season. And why is Manuel Legris so divine? He gets BETTER and BETTER as he gets older! I find him even more polished than he was 3 years ago. His partnership with Aurelie Dupont this summer in Japan was particularly memorable. There's been a lot of hype building up around Mathieu Ganio, but I must say that I think he was promoted way too early; he certainly didn't live up to my etoile expectations. And finally, Ashley "LA" Bouder is probably one of the youngest, brightest Balanchine ballerinas to be coming out in the recent years. I can't find any up&coming ballerina who matches her talent/skill in NYCB AND ABT combined. Finally, I hope Forsyth will continue to produce more works for some of the major classical companies, more works like "Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude" wouldn't hurt.
Eye-opener of the Year Many NYCB balletomanes seem to have a hard time with Peter Martin's works, and I am not particularly fond of them either, but Octet, his new work for the Royal Danish Ballet, was actually pretty nicely done, and Yao Wei, a corps member, particularly caught my eyes. She's a dancer to look forward to. Oh and lastly, we don't get to watch too much of Vienna State Opera Ballet, but Shoko Nakamura, a soloist dancer over there, is probably the next Yoshida. Their styles are different, but I think this girl has the talent to conquer the world.

Special Mention Lei Zhao of the BRB was lovely in Allegri Diversi on the mini tour in Durham. Cojocaru's amazingly fast turns off the stage in Act II of the RB's Bayadere! The RB corps showing what they can do in les Noces. Acsosta in Spectre...he may not have been suited to the role, but he can really jump! All the swans in ENB's swan Lake...er...have I said too many?
