On Monday night "Serenade" was well danced by the corps, and by the three superb leading women Natalia Sologub, Irina Golub, and Sofia Gumerova. However there was even more poetry in the performance last year when the Kirov performed this ballet in the St. Petersbug gala in Covent Garden.

I had never seen this Millicent Hodson version of "The Rite of Sping" before. The different groupings of the tribe in the first part were interesting, and the second part was full of circular patterns. However I thought that the ending seemed quite tame compared with the MacMillan version. The whole cast coped well with the turned-in choreography. Yulia Makhalina danced the Chosen Victim movingly with weight and gravitas.

"Etudes" was a triumph for the Kirov, despite a few wobbles. Svetlana Zakharova danced majestically, strongly partnered by Leonid Sarafanov who danced cleanly and effortlessly in his solos. Andrian Fadeyev, the other male soloist, impressed in his multiple pirouettes in both directions as well as his long series of double tours en l'air.
