Christopher Hampson,
Prokofiev 'R Us

Chistopher Hampson website

Christopher Hampson, formerly a dancer and choreographer with ENB, has been keeping a diary for us since November 97. Initially he covered the creation of his new ballet ‘Country Garden’ but since then there have been 20 other ballets, and he has been a freelance choreographer for three years.

Here is a link to the previous column in the series.

Diary: January - March

Trapeze

I have been working on Trapeze for just three weeks and my dancers have had to become trapeze artists in this short time.

Well, I cheated. I’d been having trapeze lessons for over three weeks prior to their rehearsal period. I suffer from vertigo and I haven’t done any sort of training (ballet or otherwise) for over three years. If I could do it, so could

they! And they can…I’ve been working with a wonderful teacher called Lorraine Moynahan. She can fool anybody onto getting up on a three metre high trapeze (it doesn’t sound a lot, I grant you, but once you add your own height on top of that then things start to get serious).

I completed the ballet only two days ago and we had some visitors to watch the next day. One of whom was Noëlle Mann and it’s because her that we’re all doing this piece. Noëlle discovered this “lost Prokofiev score”. I was quite nervous about her seeing the work as she knows more about Prokofiev than her own husband (her own admission).

Other Stuff

Royal New Zealand Ballet

Prague International Masterclass

I’m packing my suitcase for New Zealand at present. I leave the day after the premiere of Trapeze and away for some time. I’m choreographing a new production of Romeo and Juliet for the Royal New Zealand Ballet. It really is a Prokofiev year form me.

Once I’m back I go straight to Prague to work with Daria on her series of Masterclasses. Lots of friends working on…Irek Mukhamedov, Andrea Hall, Martin James, Amy Hollingsworth to name but a few.

In the Autumn I’ll be re-staging Nutcracker, followed by a new production of Giselle for the Prague National Ballet (2004).

Other stuff too, but let’s leave it there. I shall write from New Zealand. Until then…
