Best Production Overall RB Giselle, despite dingy lighting
Best New Production "V" just about over "Double Concerto"
Best Revival RB Onegin
Best Staging
Best Home Company RB - just about
Best Visiting Company a toss-up between Alvin Ailey and Mark Morris
Best Male Dancer Kobborg - excellent in most things
Best Female Dancer Yoshida
Best Partnership Cojocaru/Kobborg
Most Promising Male RB 'sJohannes Stepanek, BRB's Iain Mackay, who keeps attracting my attention, I hope for the right reasons!
Most Promising Female ENB's Begona Cao, delightful in Who Cares? and others, and RB's Laura Morera, who stands out even in a crowd
Worst Production PNB's Silver Lining
Special Mention Great performances: Cojocaru/Corella stunning in Don Q - just about justified putting it on. Alvin Ailey Co. in "Revelations" - even better than last time. Yoshida's Swanilda - a total delight. Kobborg's Onegin debut - a fully-fledged portrayal. Rojo's Giselle pdd at the Mukhamedov Gala - literally out of this world! Kobborg/Cojocaru in Giselle. The Trocks in Gaîté Parisienne - huge fun, and obviously having a whale of a time. Rojo, Whitehead, Yanowsky and Cope in various Carmens. Other positives: Nao Sakuma's promotion to principal at BRB and her Swan Lake debut. Pleased to see a number of good ballets (particularly Hampson/Wheeldon) by young British choreographers - Double Concerto still delights even after several viewings. Bad - RB: injury problems, underuse of good dancers and concentration on casting youth at the expense of experience. Inadequate notification of casting - both in terms of changes and major secondary characters. A series of generally unmemorable triple bills. Loss of Sarah Wildor - suspect it will make itself particularly felt in Manon and Mayerling this year. The Jubilee Gala - not a good dish to set before a Queen. Extortionate, upward-spiralling prices at ROH may be affordable to occasional balletgoers but are forcing regulars away. Bad - other: BRB's season at Sadler's Wells, admittedly hit by injury, gave some cause for concern about standards, although it also pointed up some potentially promising dancers. Retirement of Michael O'Hare - he will be greatly missed. Another thought: I would very much like to see Tamara Rojo get a reasonably regular partner who can match her in terms of dancing and interpretation.
Eye-opener of the Year Gary Avis - I knew his acting was improving a lot by the time he left the RB, but as Tybalt in ENB's Nureyev production of R&J his performance almost blew me away. The latest dire straits saga of Scottish Ballet - let's hope they get people in charge who have the company and audience's best interests at heart. The Frankfurt Ballet saga - made me believe even more fervently that predominantly local funding is not the answer.

Special Mention Congratulations to Laetita Pujol, for her promotion to "Etoile" in May 2002. Diana Vishneva in "Rubies" and "Don Quixote" (as a guest @ POB)-- what a dancer. To POB's corps for being the best in the world, IMO.
Eye-opener of the Year Carlos Acosta was a dazzling Basil in DQ, despite the horrible production. Kirov Ballet's corps are getting better and better every year.

Most Promising Female Sonia Aguilar (ENB)
Worst Production Por Vos Meuro (first time was ok but...)
Special Mention Rojo & Cooper in Onegin, Bussell & Yanowsky in In the Middle, Cojocaru & Kobborg in Romeo & Juliet (though RB orchestra could not have been more different from LSO under Rostropovich), Yoshida & Cope and Cojocaru & Corella were really special in dull DonQ, Yoshida & Rojo & Galeazzi(separately) at Mukhamedov's Gala and Edur in anything!
Eye-opener of the Year Adagio for Strings by ENB students was simple yet far more moving than say extravagant star studded Beyond Bach. Golden Jubilee Gala was less satisfactory than Beryl Grey or Mukhamedov's Galas. I love RB but there were so many disappointments in the last season.

Special Mention "On your Toes" I loved the musical very much. Adam Cooper is not only a showstopper on stage but very gifted choreographer. Yurie Shinohara and Patrick Armand danced Giselle (Produciton: Derek Deane) in Japan. I was so moved by their perfect deep dance-drama. I needed 2 packs of tissues .
Eye-opener of the Year Lauren Cuthbertson and Martin Harvey gave us the very special impression in Cathy Marston's "Between Shadows". Thomas Edur as, Drosselmeier, Apollo and the leading guy in "Who Cares ?" was the happiest moment during the year for me :-)

Special Mention Christopher Bruce - the end of an era for Rambert; Henri Oguike company - fresh and good; Moscow Stanislavsky Ballet for putting up with the RFH; Matz Skoog - the future is bright for ENB; Miyako Yoshida - waiting patiently, but not forgotten.
Eye-opener of the Year RB lighting in Bayadere opened my eyes - it was so dim I couldn't see much from the amphi..... Tom Edur in 'Who Cares?' was a revelation - classicist to vaudeville artist in one leap!.. Caroline Duprot as Calliope - a very poised coryphée in such an exposed role.

Special Mention Great to see Gary Avis back with a major UK company - an excellent Von Rothbart swooping around the vast expanse of the RAH like a magnificent bird of prey.
Eye-opener of the Year Realising how crucial a good conductor is to a ballet performance, and what a small community of good ballet conductors there is. This only dawned on us when we discovered that Graham Bond (who conducted R&J at the ROH) conducted the very first ballet my wife and I saw together over a quarter of a century ago - LFB's Nutcracker at the Liverpool Empire (1976).

Special Mention Wonderful to have Darcey Bussell back on stage after a year away and dancing better than ever. The rise of Marianela Nunez, Miyako Yoshida's wonderful Coppelia and Johnny Cope showing just how valuable he is to the company. Yanowsky in Carmem - she stole the show for me although only just from a hilarious Johnny Cope.
Eye-opener of the Year The situation at the RB and the manner in which the management have treated their dancers!

Best New Production Trock's "Don Q"

Best Home Company None have been up to scratch this year
Best Visiting Company Trocks & Mark Morris
Best Male Dancer Johan Kobborg & Angel Corella
Best Female Dancer Zenaida Yanowsky & Alina Cojocaru
Best Partnership Cojocaru with Kobborg or Corella
Most Promising Male Edward Watson - because he still hasn't been allowed to reveal his full potential yet.
Most Promising Female Natasha Oughtred
Worst Production Mats Ek's "Carmen"
Special Mention It's not been a good season - especially at the Royal Ballet, where my optimism for the future has really taken a nose dive. Some real dross repertoire including "Carmen", which I never want to see again ever. Amazed people seem to think that everything was wonderful under Anthony Dowell - he was a useless director, and the RB went into a real decline under him. At least Ross Stretton has improved some quality (but not enough) to the corps de ballet. On the plus side it's been a good season for Cojocaru & Yanowsky, who have given the best ballerina performances in Britain. A pleasure to see Belinda Hatley back at the end of the season, and Marianela Nunez really took off with some whizz bang shows. Mystery of the year - the promotion of Mara Galeazzi. Just don't understand what people see in her.
Eye-opener of the Year Nothing.

Eye-opener of the Year I appear to be very much in the minority - but I really enjoyed the breadth and variety of the RB's 2001-2002 season - for me it was an excellent mix, with some superlative performances

Special Mention Disastrous Jubilee gala at ROH. A complete farce, ill chosen items and wrecked by incompetent stagehands
Eye-opener of the Year Darcey Bussell's stellar performance in In the Middle Somewhat elevated (an absurd & pretentious title). I'll never like Forsythe's ballets, but Bussell's dancing really did "elevate" the piece.

Eye-opener of the Year Yoshida turning a very dull Don Q into gold. The RB's calculated snub to Dame Beryl's gala - why ? How tired and drained Cojocaru was at a masterclass at the end of a long day (still gorgeous though, but it just didn't seem fair to ask her to do more).

Special Mention Certain perfomances of Onegin with Rojo/Cooper were sublime, a perfect mix of dance and drama, also the dress rehearsal with Galeazzi/Tewsley was very special. Angel Corella in anything was unforgetable, the same for Alina.
Eye-opener of the Year Ballet, as an art, should make one reevaluate opinions, this is its primary function. This season I must leave the section empty. What does this say about the current state of the art? Death to conventiality.Amaze me.

Best Home Company RB (dancers only - maybe next year have one category for Dancers and another for Admin. ;-))
Best Visiting Company Kirov; not much else to write home about
Best Male Dancer Carlos Acosta/Johan Kobborg
Best Female Dancer Alina Cojocaru
Best Partnership Edur and Oaks. Seperately, world-class. Together, they're at some other level.
Most Promising Male Ivan Putrov. He may be a principal now but he still has a lot of potential to get better. Possibly Cojocaru's long-term partner.
Most Promising Female Lauren Cuthbertson. I only saw her once, in the Clore, but after much deliberation she's still the one that sticks out in my mind.
Worst Production Silver Lining, Pacific Northwest. There should be laws.
Special Mention Bad: Yoshida and Benjamin sitting on the bench. Good: Darcey Bussell's return has been impressive and welcome. Very Good: Oaks and Edur's DonQ pdd at the Dame Beryl Grey gala was simply perfect. Great: The single moment Kobborg's Romeo caught sight of Cojocaru's Juliet at the ball - pure, intense, magic.
Eye-opener of the Year Not in terms of re-evaluation but as a literal eye-opener - Jonathan Cope shaking his booty in Carmen. Hilarious.

Best Production Overall Romeo & Juliet (BRB) with Leticia as Jul
Best New Production Taming Of The Shrew - Welsh Ind. Ballet
Best Revival dunno - what constitutes a "revival"?
Best Staging The Nutcracker (BRB) - always perfect
Best Home Company BRB (without a doubt!)
Best Visiting Company PNWB (in spite of poor reviews)
Best Male Dancer Chi Cao
Best Female Dancer Leticia Muller (of course!)
Best Partnership Leticia Muller / Iain Mackay (R+J)
Most Promising Male Kosuke Yamamoto (as the friend, dancing the pants off the prince in Swan Lake)
Most Promising Female dunno
Worst Production Petrushka (Opera North)
Special Mention Swansea Ballet Russe - they are getting more adventerous in their programming, deviating from the usual Russian Classics.
Eye-opener of the Year Scottish Ballet - Carmen A couple of years back I was chatting to one of the reviewers for an Edinburgh paper. She said "Scottish Ballet aren't very good and if you can see them, don't bother". How wrong she was! Not much wrong with their Carmen performed against a minimalistic set.

Special Mention An interesting upand down season for the Royal Ballet-its first under the leadership of Ross Stretton. Witnessing previously unacknowleged dancers (eg Brian Maloney), being picked for solo roles (Carmen) and old favourites being left of roles they are noted for (Vanessa Palmer as Myrtha). Ups and downs, interesting bills, flourishing young talent.
Eye-opener of the Year Belinda Hately coming back from injury and stealing the summer season.

Special Mention Adam Cooper flying upside down across the stage in the Princess Zenobia scenario in 'On Your Toes'. Hilarious!
Eye-opener of the Year The prodigious talent of Adam Cooper as exemplified in 'On Your Toes': what will he do next? The courage of Michael Nunn & Billy Trevitt for striking out on their own and succeeding. And the brave decision of Sarah Wildor to walk out of the company which has nurtured her.

Most Promising Female Laura Morera
Worst Production Silver Lining (PNWB)
Special Mention RB corps of threatening Wilis - quite a spine shivering experience
Eye-opener of the Year Woeful underuse of some of RB's wonderful principals and soloists. Having suffered a season of not knowing who is going to be dancing the lesser roles in RB productions, the realisation that sometimes it is these roles that can make or break a performance. Not a happy year, all in all.

Worst Production Anastasia Volochkova Company (but what legs and beauty!)
Special Mention Alvin Ailey and Hubbard Street enthralled - classy, wide ranging accessibe dance that cheers people. Why on earth do we have no UK companies like this?
The increasing national acclaim for the work of Christopher Hampson and Cathy Marston - both created excellent works this year.
RB's Lauren Cuthbertson
Eye-opener of the Year Sadness at seeing Miyako Yoshida's talents squandered

Best New Production Tryst, no question
Best Revival Coppelia
Best Staging Carmen
Best Home Company The Royal Ballet
Best Visiting Company I wasn't too keen on the ones I saw...
Best Male Dancer Johan Kobborg
Best Female Dancer Yseult Lendvai
Best Partnership Cojocaru & Kobborg
Most Promising Male Martin Harvey
Most Promising Female Lauren Cuthbertsen
Worst Production Tie between Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude and Por Vos Muero
Special Mention Yseult Lendvai - her Tatiana was a reminder that there are great dancers outside the RB after all! Cojocaru and Kobborg in Giselle and in Leaves were just unforgettable. Tryst was mesmerising - more of the same please! Bussell and Bolle were so fresh and delightful in R&J, it surprisingly turned out to be one of my favourite performances ever. Cathy Marston's work in the Clore. Yoshida and Cope were a joy to watch in Don Q.
Eye-opener of the Year Ross Stretton. I tried to stay optimistic and open to him throughout the year but the hopeless gala and the general discontent in recent weeks has opened my eyes a little. The fact that a dancer of Miyako Yoshida's calibre has been ignored and wasted last season upsetted me.

Best Male Dancer Thomas Edur
Best Female Dancer Alina Cojocaru
Best Partnership Oaks and Edur
Most Promising Male Edward Watson
Most Promising Female Natasha Oughtred
Worst Production Beyond Bach RB
Special Mention The Kirovs' Serenade, given at the Maryinsky Gala, was simply perfect in every way, and drew tears. Miyako Yoshida who exemplifies grace and exquisite poise, with great philosophy in the face of advancing youth. Zenaida Yanowsky who constantly amazes with her daring (In the Middle) and grandeur (Don Q, Nutcracker, Giselle. Nicolas Le Riche, with incomparable stage presence in M and A, and R and J. Oaks and Edur, who gave the best Don Q pas de deux I have ever seen at the Beryl Grey Gala. Adam Cooper, even more talented than we thought, in On Your Toes and Onegin. Vanessa Palmer, a great character actress who can still jump and bouree with the best. and Please preserve us from any more ballets set to dreary Spanish songs
Eye-opener of the Year Darcey Bussell, a real case of maternity bringing maturity, was fabulous in the In the Middle, radiant in Birthday Offering, and mesmerisingly flexible in Tryst. She held the Golden Jubilee Gala together.

Special Mention Blown away by Cojocaru & Kobborg's Romeo & Juliet and the pdd by Nagao & Westmoreland in NBT's Madame Butterfly. Dancers are a breed apart of course, but special mention should go to the staff at the ROH. Whether it be front of House staff, stage door or box office, they are some of the most courteous people I have encountered -particularly at the recent sale...so helpful! Thanks for making our visits so enjoyable.
Eye-opener of the Year The dancers of the RB always work incredibly hard, but I am extremely concerned at the way they have been treated this past year, and the casting indecision, lack of rehearsal time and injuries they have suffered. Appalling really...

Eye-opener of the Year Cojocaru and Kobborg! I'd been impressed by both of them separately at the end of last season, but really hadn't expected to be blown away by them in Onegin. This is a very special partnership (and that ballet was perfect for them) between two very special individuals. HOWEVER we do like to see other dancers occasionally! I haven't seen Yoshida ALL YEAR!
