Anybody who saw the Royal Ballet Dance Bites tours (reviews link) will probably remember Cathy Marston's work - its invention and freshness particularly.

While other choreographers perhaps waxed and waned Cathy always seemed to deliver a goodie for Dance Bites.

Having danced and choreographed in Europe for much of the 1990's she returned home last summer (2000) and, charming woman that she is, agreed to write a diary for us with hardly any arm twisting whatsoever!

This is the second time I'm writing my diary this month: I thought I was being really cool when I bought myself a new palm-top this week; I wrote my diary whilst hanging around at the Opera House between rehearsals and thought I could just transfer it onto my laptop at home…. Well, no - nothing that involves computers and me is ever quite as simple as that. I discovered I have to get another connection; then I discovered I couldn't buy it from the shop but have to order it; then, whilst trying to find my diary file on the new palm-top in order to type it up again, I managed to delete it entirely. What a genius I am…!

So, what's been happening?

I started the month being a dancer for a brief few days. I'm working with Newcastle-based choreographer, Liv Lorent, on her Jerwood Award project. I thought it would be hard to fit in any dancing work during the next few months but she's working around my schedule - very nice of her, and very nice for me - despite spending rather too much 'experimental time' promenading myself in full penchee on my finger tips. You have to see it to understand what on earth I'm talking about - even if you got that I can't find the right accents on my keyboard to make penchee look French!

Outside In - "Unstrung Tension"

Well, I think anyone who reads the Postings section has probably heard enough about Outside In - even if you didn't see it. Altogether I was happy with how my piece went; having lost two dancers and replaced them in the fortnight beforehand, I was rather holding my breath, but as usually my cast were fantastic - especially inspired by the gorgeous cellist I'd found to play the piece!!

English National Ballet

Certainly the most exciting event this month - and surprisingly nerve-wracking too - was starting my choreography for the English National Ballet. I shouldn't have worried though; they are all lovely - or at least all the girls and the two boys I've worked with so far have been very inspiring and encouraging. I've only actually had eight hours of rehearsal until now; my 'proper' creation period is in April, but as it's only two weeks I've taken advantage of any spare hours they've got going and we've already made about four minutes or more which I would consider a good bonus!

Cohabitants for Royal Ballet/ADI

The morning after the Outside In premiere, I was back in the Opera House making a rehearsal schedule for Cohabitants. I actually had rehearsals before all of the Outside In shows! I think the other choreographers thought I was completely mad - indisputable really - but I was just happy to be able to leap straight back into something, like ENB and Central aren't enough…! Anyway, it's going very well. Tomorrow, I'm rehearsing Kevin again after his lovely trip to New Zealand, and as he will probably give you all the gossip about the piece I won't spoil his fun!!

Central School of Ballet

Well - Pride and Prejudice is now my next premiere. It opens in Ilford in just over a week and then does a third of its tour before hitting the Linbury in April. Today I gave the students a 'serious talk' but generally things are going OK; we've had Carl Davis' score recorded by an orchestra which is doing wonders for general inspiration as are Kate Ford's beautiful costumes. I think it's quite a different kind of work for me - much more classical than I've been making recently, but there is a hefty pas de deux of course - that's the whole point isn't it?! Anyway, I look forward to seeing you there!
