The Royal Ballet's loss is the Scottish Ballet's gain as Sarah Wildor joins them to tour Frederick Ashton's charming two act ballet 'The Two Pigeons' over the next month,.

The storyline is typical boy-dumps-his-girl-but-learns-his-lesson stuff but the cast are clearly enjoying themselves: something that Ashton's great comic material easily facilitates. Wildor plays The Young Girl with a winsome trembling bottom lip as she is rejected by her beau (Ivan Dinev) and her oh so genteel attempts to compete with the aggressively bosom shaking Lorna Scott (A Gypsy Girl) will bring a tear of laughter to the eye . Andrew Ross (A Gypsy Boy), dark and moody in a pantomime sort of a way, was well matched with Scott and together they make an arrogant double act with real rapport.

The heart of this ballet is the final reconciliatory pas de deux, complete with pigeons. This demonstrates Wildor's unique quality as a dancer: she really has the ability to move the audience. Her acting skills are great and her movement is more than just technical: as she trembled and shook the pathos was evident.

It is a great shame that other commitments have prevented Wildor's husband, Adam Cooper, from starring alongside her in this production as this would have provided some authentic sparks onstage. Still, Wildor is a gem of a dancer and the perfect Young Girl.
