Christopher Hampson,
Down under....

Christopher Hampson, formerly a dancer and choreographer with ENB, has been keeping a diary for us since November 97. Initially he covered the creation of his new ballet ‘Country Garden’ but since then there have been lots of other ballets, and he is now a freelance choreographer.

Currently he's out in New Zealand doing a piece for RNZB...

Here is a link to the previous column in the series.

25th February 2001
I'm just waiting for the technical rehearsal to start for my new work "Saltarello". It will be premiered on March 1st at the Opera House, Wellington. I've been in New Zealand for four weeks now and the prospect of going back to England's February climate is not appealing.

This new ballet has been in the pipeline for some time now. I was first approached about it by Matz Skoog (Artistic Director, Royal New Zealand Ballet) when I was in Australia, still swanning with ENB. It has taken nearly two years to get the diaries of RNZB and my own to match up, but it has been worth the wait.

I'm working out here with Fido who has been coming to Wellington for the past five years. He has shown me around the town (it doesn't take long) and we've made the most of our free time...Roller-blading down Oriental Bay, driving up the Kapiti Coast, appearing in the newspapers a lot, disappearing to bars on the harbour and being thrown off a bouncy castle at the Cuba St. Carnival (we were asked "what do you two think you're doing, you're acting like a couple of five year olds..." How else do you act on a bouncy castle?).

Working with different companies is real perk to this job. I have met many new people, worked with a variety of dancers and this all goes back into my work.

Ooops, run out of time, rehearsal's in ten minutes, will finish this later...
