Best Production Overall Bolshoi's Don Quixote
Best New Production Bolshoi's Bright Stream ('new' in UK!)
Best Revival RB's Coppelia

Best Male Dancer Sergei Filin
Best Female Dancer Aurelie Dupont
Best Partnership Yoshida & Bonelli; Alexandrova & Filin
Most Promising Male Stephen McRae
Most Promising Female Natalia Osipova
Worst Production Torn between Sacred Monsters and CNB's Don Q
Special Mention Great British Summer of '06 got additional heat by the visit of Bolshoi, who impressed with rows and rows of exceptionally talented dancers as well as the clever programming (they saved the better for the last!); character dancing by RB Corps looked fabulous in de Valois's Coppelia, a great soul-enhancer; amazing quality of POB soloists despite the lack of inspirational programming, among them standout was A. Dupont, who continued to shine as now a truly blossomed ballerina. Also memorable were D. Gilbert's impressive, positively 'diva-ish' Gamzatti, and M. Ganio's debut as Albrecht - a heartening sign of things to come; a bit unlikely but surprisingly successful partnership of Uliana Lopatkina and Igor Kolb - their empathic approach to the music did wonder in Leningrad Symphony and Pavlova & Cechetti; Victoria Tereshkina as the 5th variation girl in Paquita Grands pas and Auber's pdd – “But NO! No, I don't believe she's not yet made a Principal – how can Mariinsky keep her like that?”
Eye-opener of the Year Ilya Kuznetsov – a rare glimpse of him in a modern dance piece made me think he had huge potential to excel in contemporary dance as well as classics; Victoria Tereshkina – a sheer delight to see such maturity from such a young dancer! Miles ahead of her peers already, and all the evidence so far shows a great ballerina is in the making.....

Worst Production Bolshoi's Pique Dame
Special Mention For all the wrong reasons: - Ivan Putrov's knee injury and subsequent absence: so relieved he appears to have made a good recovery. - Kobborg's absence over the previous months – let's hope ditto - shortage of ballet and dance on TV this year. - audience applause during RB's Requiem totally ruining the mood. - politics tainting dancing. - the Kirov's London programming. - frustration, at the RB, at dancers of all ranks not getting enough roles, or enough performances to consolidate them. - disappointment at Jonathan Cope's accident preventing his final performances, but at least he wasn't seriously hurt, and what a marvellous send-off he was given! - BRB's all-too-short season at Sadler's Wells: just enough to give you a glimpse of the company before they're gone again.

For all the right reasons: - Nuñez and Hatley's Swanildas and Lises – completely different, but both thoroughly enjoyable. - McRae and Cojocaru in Stars and Stripes. - The Trocks, and Robert Carter in particular. - Nice to see that it is possible to light Giselle (ENB's!) properly :-) - Ballets Russes film – can't help wondering whether the current crop of dancers will still be as lively and inspirational when they're in their 90s! - Thomas Edur's return from a very nasty injury - RB's already 50% hit rate for the current season's new choreography

Eye-opener of the Year - The Ballet-Hoo! kids – marvellous to see the impact ballet has had on their personalities and their lives - Carlos in the Diana and Actaeon pdd – quite unbelievable - Steven McRae's Spirit of Fire – especially now knowing the circumstances under which the role was created. - ENB's Andre Portasio – not a dancer I'd particularly liked prior to last year, but his performances both as Carabosse and (unfortunately curtailed) as the Canterville Ghost revealed a striking stage presence that I hadn't expected. - Mentioning no names, but comforting to know that even the world's best can foul up occasionally :) - How much more intimate BRB's production of Romeo and Juliet is than the RB's – to their advantage - Ed Watson's Paris: a characterisation which – unlike many which suggest that she could equally well have married Paris - really pointed up, as few do, just how disastrous for Juliet such a match would have been. - The inability – as yet, at least – of certain dancers, not only at the RB, to really get inside MacMillan roles.

Also, great to see Messel designs again in The Sleeping Beauty, but why not the Messel costumes and The Three Ivans?

Best New Production Chroma, Bright Stream, Three Musketeers
Best Revival The Bright Stream
Best Staging RB Nutcracker
Best Home Company Royal Ballet
Best Visiting Company Bolshoi - there was no competition (literally) (and even if there had been, they would have had to have been good to beat this lot). A fantastic London season. But how on earth did I miss their Giselle at Nottingham?? ARRGGH!!
Best Male Dancer Carlos Acosta
Best Female Dancer Alina Cojocaru; Maria Alexandrova
Best Partnership Alina Cojocaru and Johan Kobborg
Most Promising Male Stephen McRae
Most Promising Female Carol-Anne Millar (a Clara to die for); Alexandra Ansanelli (an Aurora to fall out of a balcony box for); Natalia Osipova (how does someone so young produce such fabulous, confident, performances? - a lot of people will be keenly watching to see how she develops from here)
Worst Production Bolshoi Cinderella
Special Mention Composers, especially Russian ones - 2006 was quite a good year for them

Tamara Rojo’s Juliet

Darcey Bussell in Giselle - I just had to see her at least once, live, in a full-length ballet, before she went into semi-retirement - it was a great experience

Jonathan Payn and Samara Downs as Lord and Lady Capulet

Alexander Campbell as Mercutio and Jack-in-the-Box

The wonderful ‘partnership’ of Marianela Nunez and William Tuckett in Act 2 of Coppelia

Desire Samaai and Jonathan Byrne Ollivier in The Three Musketeers

The RB production team and Boris Gruzin for giving me a Panorama to savour at last

Dominic Antonucci’s Drosselmeyer - superb

Wish I had seen:

More of Tamara Rojo

Belinda Hatley in Coppelia

Certain people whilst I still had the chance - Sylvie Guillem (in a full length classic), Julio Bocca's Albrecht, Alexandra Ferri’s Juliet

Eye-opener of the Year First ever trip to ROH a year ago and seeing a great company, live, with Alina and Johan - and then Alina and Marianela facing each other on the same stage - what an atmosphere! On this showing, Marianela should do more dark/tragic roles. When will I see her in some MacMillan?

My first viewing of the Bolshoi - The Pharoah’s Daughter with Natalia Osipova and Dmitri Gudanov.

The Bolshoi Triple Bill. Symphony in C blew me away - what a tremendous way to end a superb programme.

The RB new productions of TGV and Chroma. After years of sitting through turgid / awful /boring new works, at last we hit the jackpot - and how.

Eye-opener of the Year Ballet Hoo! - just amazing - and shows what can be done with completely untrained, but highly motivated youngsters. It moved me to tears.

Special Mention All the best Giselles have an air of ambiguity about them, and 32-year-old Glurdjidze is no exception. Amiably nondescript offstage, with squarish shoulders and frizzy, mid-brown hair, she becomes hauntingly and compellingly beautiful in performance.

Worst Production Yippee!
Special Mention 2006 was probably the year of 'happy' ballets for me- Fille, the Bright Stream (ah the memory of the usually princely Filin as the 'Sylph'!), Don Q (esp. with the superlative Osipova as Kitri), Coppelia (with Hatley coming close to perfection as Swanilda), as well as other bits and pieces, particularly the Diana & Actaeon pdd as danced by Acosta & Nunez and McRae nearly stealing the show in the Stars & Stripes pdd with Cojocaru at the Maya Gala. So who said ballet is all about ethereal and otherworldly creatures where somebody has to die by the end of the evening?! But of course there were exquisite highlights of those, too, esp. Cojocaru's Giselle (just when you thought she couldn't get better in this role ...), Lamb's Sylph and Yanowsky's Dying Swan (at Acosta show). Then there was the buzz and excitement that was Chroma, which along with DGV made that first night one of the most exciting evenings of the year. Other highlights include the Dance Umbrella Gala (esp. Tom & Pete's mock-chair-throwing-we-haven't-rehearsed-the-improvisation routine and Yanowsky & Avis rendition of Askfed), Dutch National dancing van Manen's Frank Bridge Variations and Forsythe's Second Details and the Trocks, esp. in Les Sylphides. Lowlights- well literally ... most of my lowlights from last year had little to do with the dancing but the grimness and dimness of the lighting!

Special Mention David Makhateli's debut as Prince Florimund and Lauren Cuthbertson's debut as Princess Aurora in 'Sleeping Beauty' was definitely a very special occasion.

(For 2007 the Royal Ballet should really replace their current 'Swan Lake' production.)

Eye-opener of the Year The broadcast of the Royal Ballet's 'Giselle'.

Alina Cojocaru's Giselle and Johan Kobborg's Albrecht was what really opened my eyes in the year of 2006. What a performance! I'm so glad I recorded it. Johan and Alina were absolutely outstanding!

Special Mention The worst moment was unquestionably Putrov's awful injury at the Plsietskaya Gala.

The best moment was the choice of Lucy Suggate's 'Postcard' for The Place Prize Final when I thought i was the only person who liked it!

There are so many other good memories!

Cojocaru's Giselle;

Benjamin's Firebird (plus Quaglia/Requiem/Polyphonia/ DGV - she's still on top form);

the focus on Trisha Brown at the Tate in May;

the Ballets Russes film (it must win the Oscar for best documentary film);

the Kirov-Bolshoi battle of the summer - won hands down by the latter both artistically and at the box office;

Ratmansky's 'Go For Broke';

The excellent revivals of The Sleeping Beauty and Homage to the Queen;

Kobborg in The Rake's progress - outstanding;

Acosta's domination of the early summer - at the ROH one minute, Sadler's Wells the next and then reviving Tocororo at The Coliseum;

the vibrance of Brasil Brasileiro;

the surprisingly good and very active Anastasia Volochkova in her one-off gala at Sadler's Wells;

Nao Sakuma as Juliet;

Viengsay Valdes and Joel Carreno of the National Ballet de Cuba;

the all-round excellence of this year's Place Prize;

De Keersmaeker's mesmeric performances and Cunningham's Ocean at this year's Dance Umbrella, a tearful farewell for the redoubtable Val Bourne;

some surprisingly good dance at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Disappointments included:

the Kirov season at the Coliseum;

Castle Nowehere;

Akram Khan and Sylvie Guillem's Sacred Monsters;

the Bussell/Zelensky programme at Sadler's Wells;

Lea Anderson's misunderstood Yippee for her Cholmondeleys & Featherstonehauhs;

and the evident decline of Tsikaridze.

Eye-opener of the Year There were many but top of my list would be the incomparable Gary Avis - I don't know how the Royal Ballet managed without him - he is a solid as a rock and strong as an ox - there is an air of confidence on stage every time he is around.

Special Mention in a master class, when introduced by Monica Mason, Roberta Marquez's adorable emergence from behind the curtain where she had been warming up, in a sorta TA-DAH! way, makes me smile every time I think of it.
Eye-opener of the Year Alexandra Ansanelli - at first wrote her off as 'too much', and whilst that is still sometimes the case, when she dances well, its quite breathtaking. Still pron
