| Worst Production | Les Liaisons Dangereuses (but see above) | |
| Special Mention | Best M/F dancer was a hard one to decide - but when it comes down to it, these are some of the most versatile dancers out there - able to win us over as swans, psycopaths, princesses, The Chosen One, princes, fairies/sprites, drunks, pianists, tarts....
Akram Khan for just being Akram Khan. Johnny Cope for his fabulous commentary at the Manon Insight Evening and for getting me excited to both watch dance and dance again - a personal debt which I could never repay (although I wouldn't mind help with the credit card....). And yes some of the 'most promising' are already principals... but they're young and have a lot to show still. Vogel in ENB's Romeo and Juliet was jaw-dropping stunning. Tamara Rojo for her little moments of stillness. And then whipping out the most amazing turns ever. And for making me love Marguerite. Diedre Chapman. 'Nuff said. Alina and Johan's Footnote to Ashton at the Linbury. Simply brilliant. Loads of fabulous touring and companies in our midst - in Ox alone the amount of dance this past year was awesome. And in London? wow. The Danes, Cubans, Russians (Vishneva and Lopatkina in the same week!!!), French...... Forsythe, POB, BRB, Leon... see, I've already lost count. (Go Salders Wells!)
Companies in trouble - ENB, Ballet Internationale, Washington Ballet ...
| Eye-opener of the Year | Ivan Putrov in Pierrot Lunaire. Keep on workin' it.
Loads of flashy smashy staging - most notable of which was Les Liaisons Dangereuses -- slick, to say the least. But more and more we are seeing this slick staging with cool lighting - Akram Khan redefines the stage in his productions; Khan, Ballet Boyz (specifically thinking this year's Naked), Maliphant, et. al. play with lights, etc. in interesting ways (not that any of this is really really new, but go with me on this for a second) - but to me, the ones that still worked best are the ones that didn't lose the dance in the midst of the staging (so, for example, Khan and Maliphant) - they might not have been perfect, but they more than make up for it by being interesting, innovative, and able to pull me back to watch a second time.
Increasing trends towards hypermobility - which had been gaining in America but now seems to be taking over Russian ballet. It will be interesting to see how this changes dance, choreography, tradition, bodies, injuries, training.... Like most things, hypermobility probably has a time and a place, but *all the time and everywhere* is probably overkill.

| Most Promising Male | ||
| Most Promising Female | ||
| Worst Production | Three Songs Two Voices (RB) | |
| Special Mention | Good - RB ladies' delicious performances in Les Biches – nonchalant flapper girls' innocent smiles disguised intense eroticism; RB's Nutcracker – with Yoshida as SPF this production made one believe “God is in the details” - indeed!; memory of POB dancers under the star-lit sky in Southern France, once again having an opportunity to see Bejart's Le Chant de compagnon errant; POB's visit to the capital after the long absence, showing the company's quality in the work made-to-measure for them; artistry of L. Hilaire, who despite the half-retired status was stilll going strong and retained an unsurpassed magnetism on stage; A. Dupont continued to show maturity and seemed to gain strength and wisdom as a classical dancer; D. Vishneva & A. Fadeyev in R&J – a night to remember, when a rare theatrical magic happened; U. Lopatkina & J.G. Bart in Diamonds – a match made in heaven; seeing Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for the first time made me kick myself - Where were you all my life?? (Although of course they had been around c. 1958!); a versatile and quality programming of Sadlers Wells.
Bad: That I did't fall in love with much-admired RDB, at the first encounter – maybe next time!
Kirov's Shades scene in La Bayadere this summer – At least two of the Shades' arabesque-penché was too deep their raised legs looked as if stabbed knives stood above the ground at 75-80 degrees – a horrendous sight! A worrying sign I never noticed on their previous visit – a price they had to pay for dancing contemporary choreography such as Forsythe's?
| Eye-opener of the Year | Frederick Ashton (since the previous season, actually) – To think how fortunate British ballet is to have his legacy – a kind any other major international ballet company could only envy....
POB etoile Jean-Guillaume Bart – A shame but didn't quite realise until last year that he was very, truly, purely, classical, dancer.

| Special Mention | The solo by Jennifer Jackson in the 'Made in Sweden' evening at the Linbury (the only thing worth watching all night) and Vanessa Fenton's choreography at the two 'First Drafts' evenings in the Clore -surely most promising choreographer if you had such a catagory. | |

| Best New Production | Kobborg's La Sylphide for the Royal Ballet | |
| Best Revival | Bintley's Tombeaux for the Royal | |
| Best Staging | Lesson (RB) | |
| Best Home Company | Royal Ballet, but they cost a fortune. Best value for money is Northern Ballet Theatre and Rambert. | |
| Best Visiting Company | National Ballet of Cuba and Australian Ballet | |
| Best Male Dancer | RDB's Thomas Lund | |
| Best Female Dancer | RB's Tamara Rojo | |
| Best Partnership | Guillem-Maliphant - two old pros as one and doing something new | |
| Most Promising Male | RB's Rupert Pennefather | |
| Most Promising Female | RB's Sarah Lamb | |
| Worst Production | Not a good year at times... 1) Generating Company Lactic Acid - bad circus mixed with dire dance 2) October's Rosemary Butcher bill at Tate Modern...a King and his clothes come to mind. 3) Adam Cooper's Les Liaisons Dangereuses - a much admired artist sadly went off the rails | |
| Special Mention | Seeing Viengsay Valdes turns in the National Ballet of Cuba run at Sadler's - breathtaking. Joy of Danish dancers and Bournonville show at Sadler's - they increase the gaity of nations. Huge sadness at Jock Soto returing from NYCB
Most dispointing performance was Paris Opera at Sadler's - great dancers in rep few wanted to see them in.
| Eye-opener of the Year | Susie Crow's 'Ballet in Small Spaces' bill in an Oxford school. A wonderful night of choreography/dance/live music produced on a budget of a few thousand and which drew in the local community. We need more initiatives like this. Sadness that the Royal Ballet and the other ballet companies, with the possible exception of Northern Ballet Theatre, do so little new work. They will come under increasing pressure to get their acts together and cut the excesses.
The clutch of wonderful freelance dance performers that are now forming around ROH2 and producing great work that seems to herald a looser and more easily managed way of creating dance. As Clement Crisp might say "This is good!"

| Worst Production | Bruce 'Hendrix' piece at the RB | |
| Special Mention | Sarah Lamb's RB debuts as Odette/Odile, The Sylph and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Lovely in all three roles; what an asset she is to the RB. Marianela Nunez has also had a wonderful year, and is the best female Ashton interpreter in the Company. Zen in anything she has done, but especially her debut in Manon, which blew us all away. Mara Galeazzi in anything MacMillan...she is the Company's best female MacMillan interpreter. The Markova film at the RBS. | |
| Eye-opener of the Year | David Makhateli...I think he is getting better and better and his dramatic skills have consistently improved during 2005. He is fast becoming an in-demand partner and romantic lead. The Kirov's Forsythe programme; who says they are dinosaurs?! | |

| Most Promising Male | can't decide between McRae & Pennefather | |
| Most Promising Female | Sarah Lamb | |
| Worst Production | Can’t remember the absolute pits, so RB Les Rendezvous – solely for those designs! | |
| Special Mention | Tamara Rojo, for finally making me see the justification in reviving 'Marguerite and Armand' (and for her Ondine, Chosen Maiden, Manon …). Disappointment: not being able to see Kobborg in 'La Sylphide' – although his Des Grieux pretty much made up for it – one of the few good ones I saw all year. Good to see the Skeaping 'Giselle' revived for ENB. Kobborg/Cojocaru in ‘Duo Concertante’ in particular. The Royal Danes in Bournonville. Some great Lises, in very different styles. Jonathan Cope’s retirement after many years of high-quality service. Great to see POB in London at last, though I still wish it could have been something more illustrative of their particular talents. The Ashton centenary. Mark Morris DG in ‘V’ – still absolute bliss; and on that note, how could I not mention the superb first cast of 'Symphonic Variations' (and the second were pretty good, too)? Some great performances by the Alvin Ailey company, too. | |
| Eye-opener of the Year | Not sure which of the two was the more unexpected, but Marianela Nunez and Edward Watson proving to be such good Ashton dancers (probably Nunez, in fact, since I'd already got an inkling from seeing him in 'Symphonic' in Dartford the year before). Putrov in ‘Pierrot Lunaire’ – still managed to surprise me, even though I’d thought him the obvious choice for the role. Watson’s collection of psychopaths etc. at the end of last year – somewhat unexpected, and quite a shock to the system! | |

SB's Jarkko Lehmus and Diana Loosmore at Dance Base during the Edinburgh Festival. BRB's Aonghus Hoole for bringing small. none-dance roles to life. The Yorkshire Ballet Seminars Gala. And the bad...Jonathan Cope injuring himself badly at the very end of his career and missing his farewell performances.
| Eye-opener of the Year | The Hamburger Theaternacht, where most of the theatres in Hamburg open their doors for a night (rehearsals or repeated extract performances). Tickets cost only 9 Euros and are available on the night. Hamburg Ballet opened their studios for an evening of open rehearsals running simultaneously in several studios. The whole company was involved. Shame our big cities don't put on something similar. BRB's Iain Mackay has become a much better dancer than I expected him to become a few years ago when he began his rapid rise to the top of the company. | |

| Eye-opener of the Year | Marianela Nunez- never would have guessed this firecracker of a Kitri from a few years ago would have blossomed into a most ravishing Ashton ballerina; the sheer joy of Bournonville brought to the UK by Thomas Lund and his team at Sadler’s Wells and Johan Kobborg’s Sylphide, while the masterclass with Sorella Englund proved how utterly compelling and relevant his ballets, when performed with care and honesty, can still be to today’s audience | |
