The National Film Theatre is delighted to announce a series of television screenings featuring the work of Kenneth MacMillan on television in October 2002 as part of the International Celebration of Kenneth MacMillan.

Given that Kenneth MacMillan's ambition to pursue a career in dance was nurtured by watching dance on screen it is highly appropriate that the National Film Theatre will be screening a series of television programmes showing the choreographer at work, and ballets he choreographed. These screenings are organised in conjunction with the MacMillan Conference at the Royal Academy of Dance.

Among the programmes scheduled for inclusion are Derek Bailey's brilliant South Bank Show, MacMillan's Mayerling (LWT tx.17.6.78) on the creation of Mayerling, and Jack Gold's A Lot of Happiness (Granada tx. 15.12.81). The South Bank Show combines rehearsals in the studio with interviews with the creators and the performance of highlights of Mayerling by the original Royal Ballet cast. A Lot of Happiness follows the creation of pas de deux for Birgit Keil and Vladimir Klos over a period of five days investigating the creative process involved. In addition to these two award-winning documentaries it is hoped to include Peter Wright's screen adaptation of Las Hermanas (BBC tx.21.2.65) and the recording from the Big Top of Elite Syncopations (1974).

This season is curated by dance historian Jane Pritchard who will also be programming a season at the National Film Theatre in January 2003 of Rudolph Nureyev on television to mark the tenth anniversary of his death.

The full programme of Kenneth MacMillan on television will be published towards the end of August 2002.

Members' priority postal booking is open from 9 September 2002 and personal and telephone booking is open from 20 September 2002.
