English National Ballet takes The Rite of Spring to Southampton and Manchester.

As its contribution to An International Celebration of Kenneth MacMillan, English National Ballet will perform The Rite of Spring as part of a Mixed Programme touring England this Autumn/Wmter.

Choreographed to Stravinsky's extraordinary score, MacMillan's The Rite of Spring was first performed on 3 May 1962 by The Royal Ballet with Monica Mason dancing the central role of The Chosen One.

Julie Lincoln restaged the production for English National Ballet in November 1999 with Monica Mason, CBE, now Assistant Director of The Royal Ballet coming in to teach the role she created. English National Ballet's production featured new sets and costumes by the designer of the original 1962 production, Yolanda Sonnabend.

The Rite of Spring, together with Mark Morris' Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes, and Christopher Hampson's Double Concerto, will be performed at The Mayflower, Southampton on 12, 13 November, and at the Manchester Opera House from 19-20 November and at the London Coliseum from 9-12 December 2002.

Artistic Director of ENglish National Ballet, Matz Skoog, comments:

"I am thrilled that The Rite of Spring is to be our contribution to this celebration of the extraordinary life of Kenneth MacMillan. It is hard to believe that ten years have passed since this great creative force was taken from us.

"MacMillan was way ahead of his time and the true mark of his genius becomes ever clearer with the passage of time. I am sure that he would wholeheartedly approve of us presenting this masterpiece at venues across the country. The Rite of Spring, with its intelligent choreography and thought-provoking themes, will no doubt still cause a sensation this year for a whole new generation, 40 years after its premiere"
