NBT, formed in 1969, are a touring company based in Leeds, England. They tour throughout the country with a very loyal following. The company's choice of name, incorporating "Theatre", is very apt - they definitely stress the theatrical and acting side more than most other companies, having established this strong identity under the leadership of the late Christopher Gable. Their productions have often been praised and they tackle new works, like Dracula, Dangerous Liaisons and Madame Butterfly as well as reworking the classics such as Romeo and Juliet and Swan Lake. David Nixon, from, BalletMet in Columbus, was appointed Artistic Director in 2001 and he has continued the theatrical traditions and renewed the company's fortunes after an earlier rough patch. Nixon is a fine producer, he also does the bulk of the choreography and the company probably does more brand-new work than any other in the UK. This despite getting the smallest Arts Council grant by some margin. It would be nice to see them have more money to be able to spread their wings beyond entertaining story ballets and also for them to use a variety of choreographers to give a wider mix of styles. But this company deliver great stuff, week in week out, to a large and diverse audience and we should all be mightily proud of that. |
