*The* classical company. Possibly the best company in the world - we always try and see them when they come to the UK (despite the price). In the traditional ballets (Swan Lake, Sleeping Beauty etc) they are hard to match. What astounds is the strength in depth with Soloists and corps members all being spot on. The Kirov, now trying to revert to their old Mariinsky Ballet name, is however suffering from the break up of the USSR and this means that the dancers we see can be a subset (if an incredibly good one) of the complete company. Russian dancers are also doing more in the west generally so seeing them does not have the mystique it perhaps once did. But this is countered by the number of 'baby' ballerinas they bring over, many of whom are revelations. When they next come over pull out all the stops and go!
