InterViews and News

This handsome blond dancer in his early twenties is an impeccable danseur with an innate nobility and a pure classical style. At Covent Garden last summer, he was the finest Prince Desire in the Kirov's new/old production of "The Sleeping Beauty".

Fadeyev dances two Nijinsky roles. He is an endearing puppet in "Petrushka", and dances in "Le Spectre de la Rose". He has also distinguished himself in the Kirov's Balanchine repertory. As the male soloist in "Rubies" Fadeyev brings out all the playfulness and fun inherent in the technical fireworks. {kirov dancers 2001}

Evgeny Ivanchenko is a tall dancer whose long limbs enable his dancing to achieve a large scale in all his steps, especially in his space-devouring high 'jetes' that are a joy to watch. His effortless technical bravura and sensitive partnering are both admirable. Some however may find his acting too bland. He is a noble Siegfried in "Swan Lake". {kirov dancers 2001}

Igor Kolb has beautiful feet and a nice long line, and dances with a clean classical style. His jumps have a very high elevation and also the softest landing. Kolb is an ardent Prince Siegfried, and a noble Prince Desire in "The Sleeping Beauty". He also dances the Young Man in "Chopiniana" beautifully with romantic yearning, and has also won praise for his debut in "Le Spectre de la Rose". {kirov dancers 2001}

Anton Korsakov, soloist

InterViews and News

This 20-year-old dancer whose face resembles Tom Cruise already shows exceptional promise in his fine schooling. As Prince Desire in "The Sleeping Beauty", he can finish all his double tours en l'air in his Act 3 variation spectacularly in a clean fifth position, which is quite a feat.

Korsakov's jumps have an easy high elevation, as shown in his solo in the 'pas de trois' in "Swan Lake". In Balanchine's "Emeralds" he excels in the intricate series of jumps in the 'pas de trois'. Korsakov is also a dazzling Golden Idol in "La Bayadere", an exciting Blue Bird, and a fine red-capped Troubador in "Romeo and Juliet". He recently made his debut in St. Petersburg as Basilio and in "Rubies". {kirov dancers 2001}

This tall and solidly built dancer, formerly of the Moscow Classical Ballet, is an impressive virtuoso dancer. Korsuntsev is a noble Prince Siegfried, an ardent Young Man in "Chopiniana", and a splendid cavalier in Balanchine's "Diamonds". {kirov dancers 2001}

Ilya Kuznetsov, first soloist

InterViews and News

Ilya Kuznetsov is a rare versatile dancer who feels equally at home in both the 'danseur noble' roles and the character roles. In "Swan Lake" he plays Siegfried as well as the evil von Rothbart in different performances. In "Romeo and Juliet", he was seen last summer in London as an impassioned Romeo one afternoon, and then as a menacing Tybalt in the same evening. Kuznetsov's Romeo has a romantic sweep, and he makes Tybalt more dominating than usual.

This tall blond dancer is also a dashing Espada in "Don Quixote" and Des Grieux in "Manon". {kirov dancers 2001}

InterViews and News

Faroukkh Ruzimatov's exotic looks resemble Nureyev in his youth. Always introverted with a grave look on his face, like a lonesome knight waiting for his next deed, Ruzimatov is vaguely reminiscent of a matador. Not surprisingly he shines in the title role of Jose Antonio's "Goya-Divertissement", revealing himself to be an intellectual dancer.

He usually portrays princely roles as well as exotic Eastern characters such as Ali in "Le Corsaire", the Golden Slave in "Scheherazade", and Solor. {kirov dancers 2001}

Vyacheslav Samodurov is a virtuoso dancer of average build and a first-rate partner. One of St Petersburg's favourite male dancers, Samodurov astounds audiences as the male soloist in "Rubies" and in "Le Corsaire". For a role that demands an immense self-expression like Petrushka, Samodurov shows a true and overwhelming passion. He also combines dramatic ability with his virtuosity as Mercutio in "Romeo and Juliet". {kirov dancers 2001}

Only a year out of the Vaganova Academy, the tall 18-year-old Dmitri Simeonov made a memorable debut as Solor in "La Bayadere" at the Maryinsky last spring. Simeonov has a pleasing line, high elevation in his jumps, and a commanding stage presence. He is also impressive as the second cavalier in "Emeralds". {kirov dancers 2001}

InterViews and News

Igor Zelensky returns to the Kirov, his home company, whenever his busy schedule of guesting worldwide allows. Sometimes he can seem somewhat indifferent, jet lagged even, but this is a 100% major dance star who nobody easily ignores.

It's the terrific power of his well-centred pirouettes and the arrowy strength of his jumps which are so imposing, and enhance his roles such as Solor and Prince Siegfried.

This tall and atheletic blond dancer is also known as an attentive and reliable partner, occasionally to Darcey Bussell. However it is with the Kirov that he shows his true colours, as a man of burning eyes, powering noiselessly through the air with all his heart as well as all his might. {kirov dancers 2001}
