 Kirov Male dancers

Andrian Fadeyev, principal
Reviews
"Fadeyev" in postings?

This handsome blond dancer in his late twenties is an impeccable danseur with an innate nobility and a pure classical style. He is the finest Prince Desire in the Kirov's new/old production of "The Sleeping Beauty". As Solor in "La Bayadere" and Albrecht in "Giselle", he is dazzling in virtuosity as well as emotional intensity.

Fadeyev has distinguished himself in the Kirov's Balanchine repertory. As the soloist in "Rubies" Fadeyev brings out all the playfulness and fun inherent in the technical fireworks. He is a peerless young god in "Apollo".

In "Ballet Imperial" his dancing is as clean as fresh air. He dances Lankedem in "Le Corsaire", a role in which he is cast against type, with dramatic flair. Fadeyev also dances two Nijinsky roles. He is an endearing puppet in "Petrushka", and dances in "Le Spectre de la Rose". {kirov dancers}

"Ivanchenko" in postings?

Evgeny Ivanchenko is a tall dancer whose long limbs enable his dancing to achieve a large scale in all his steps, especially in his space-devouring high 'jetes' that are a joy to watch. His effortless technical bravura and very reliable partnering are both admirable. Some however may find his acting too bland. He is a noble Siegfried in "Swan Lake". {kirov dancers}

"Kolb" in postings?

Igor Kolb has an elegant line and an exceptional stage presence. His extraordinary musicality, unparalleled virtuosity, and stylish dancing make him one of the finest Kirov’s male principals. Igor Kolb is now in his most mature state of dancing and acting skills, excelling in both classical and bravura roles, especially as the Golden Slave in Scheherazade.

Kolb’s interpretation of Prince Siegfried is filled with passion and grace. His Solor is heroic and full of subtlety. His emotional intensity and refined manners make his Romeo absolutely touching. Kolb also dances with polish in "Ballet Imperial" and "Le Spectre de la Rose". In more modern ballets, Kolb conveys contemplative and meaningful dancing in Forsythe’s "Steptext". As the Prince in Ratmansky's "Cinderella", although creating a not-so-princely character, he dances with an astonishing fluidity. {kirov dancers}

"Korsakov" in postings?

Anton Korsakov, whose face resembles Tom Cruise, has a fine schooling. As Prince Desire in "The Sleeping Beauty", he can finish all his double tours en l'air in his Act 3 variation spectacularly in a clean fifth position, which is quite a feat.

Korsakov's jumps have an easy high elevation, as shown in his solo in the 'pas de trois' in "Swan Lake". In Balanchine's "Emeralds" he excels in the intricate series of jumps in the 'pas de trois'. He dances the Melancholic soloist in "The Four Temperaments" with dramatic intensity. {kirov dancers}

"Korsuntsev" in postings?

This tall and solidly built dancer, formerly of the Moscow Classical Ballet, is an impressive virtuoso dancer as well as a sturdy partner. Korsuntsev is a noble Prince Siegfried and Solor, an ardent Young Man in "Chopiniana", a splendid cavalier in Balanchine's "Diamonds". He is also a dazzling Golden Slave in "Scheherazade". {kirov dancers}

Ilya Kuznetsov, first soloist

"Kuznetsov" in postings?

Ilya Kuznetsov is a rare versatile dancer who feels equally at home in both the 'danseur noble' roles and the character roles. In "Swan Lake" he plays Siegfried as well as the evil von Rothbart in different performances. In "Romeo and Juliet", he is an impassioned Romeo as well as a menacing Tybalt, a role which he makes more dominating than usual.

This tall blond dancer is also a dashing Espada in "Don Quixote" and Des Grieux in "Manon". {kirov dancers}

"Merkuriev" in postings?

Since joining the Kirov Ballet in 2001, Andrei Merkuriev has added a number of roles to his repertory. In 2002, he created the role of the Prince in Alexei Ratmansky's production of "Cinderella". A handsome and stylish dancer with charm aplenty and a strong technique, Merkuriev shines in the princely roles, as well as in the supporting roles. He is a charismatic Espada in "Don Quixote", and moving in the title role in Balanchine's "The Prodigal Son". He brings excitement to "Middle Duo" and Forsythe's "In The Middle Somewhat Elevated".

In April after winning his Golden Mask Award, Merkuriev made a remarkably confident debut as Romeo and brought out the full measure of the role. His Romeo is full of romantic passion. His newest role is the magician's nephew in "The Magic Nut". {kirov dancers}

Faroukh Ruzimatov, principal

"Ruzimatov" in postings?

Faroukkh Ruzimatov's exotic looks resemble Nureyev in his youth. Always introverted with a grave look on his face, like a lonesome knight waiting for his next deed, Ruzimatov is vaguely reminiscent of a matador. Not surprisingly he shines in the title role of Jose Antonio's "Goya-Divertissement", revealing himself to be an intellectual dancer.

He usually portrays princely roles as well as exotic Eastern characters such as Ali in "Le Corsaire", the Golden Slave in "Scheherazade", and Solor. {kirov dancers}

Leonid Sarafanov, first soloist

"Sarafanov" in postings?

Leonid Sarafanov joined the Kirov in 2002. He is a young virtuoso able to knock the audience down by his sparkling solos but slightly less impressive as a partner. He is brilliant in 'Etudes' and "Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude". His lively Basilio with his enthusiastic smile and his sincerity inspire the public. He is an interesting Albrecht in "Giselle", Solor in "La Bayadere", Desire in "Sleeping Beauty". {kirov dancers}

Vasily Scherbakov, second soloist
Reviews
"Scherbakov" in postings?

Vasily Scherbakov has the perfect physique and classical style for the princely roles. He is also a technically remarkable dancer. Scherbakov excels in the pas de trios in "Swan Lake", the Mirlitons pas de trois in "Nutcracker", the peasant pas de deux in "Giselle". As the troubadour in "Romeo & Juliet" he impresses with his elegant sweep, power, and musicality. In "La Valse" and "Rubies", he is flamboyant and stylish. It is a mystery why he is not cast to dance more leading roles. {kirov dancers}

Dmitri Simeonov, second soloist
Reviews
"Simeonov" in postings?

The tall Dmitri Semionov made a memorable debut as Solor in "La Bayadere" back in the London tour of 2000. Semionov has a pleasing line, high elevation in his jumps, and a commanding stage presence. He is also impressive as the second cavalier in "Emeralds". Unfortunately he was absent from the stage for over two years due to an injury, and only returned last year. {kirov dancers}

Vladimir Shishov, second soloist
Reviews
"Shishov" in postings?

Vladimir Shishov, a tall and vigorous dancer, already impressed the London public by his breathtaking jumps when he danced Conrad in "Le Corsaire" during the 2003 Kirov season in London. Now he is one of the most promising young dancers, impeccable and thoughtful, with high forceful jumps. His dancing lacks excessive affectation and is never beyond the requirements of the role and style. He partners Uliana Lopatkina especially well.

Shishov is noble and gentle in "La Valse", manly and even brutal as Ferhad in "Legend of Love". His powerful and terrifying von Rothbart in "Swan Lake" is memorable. He is also a wonderful Basilio in "Don Quixote" and a noble Jean de Brienne in "Raymonda". {kirov dancers}

Vladimir Shklyarov, coryphee
Reviews
"Shklyarov" in postings?

Vladimir Shklyarov joined the Kirov in 2003. With a brilliant academic technique, good looks and expressiveness he has managed to become a rising young dancer who is convincing as James in "La Sylphide", one of the two male soloists in "Etudes", Desire in "Sleeping Beauty" and a role in "The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude". His partnership with Evgenia Obraztsova in "La Sylphide" is especially good and moving. {kirov dancers}

Igor Zelensky, principal

Reviews
"Zelensky" in postings?

Igor Zelensky returns to the Kirov, his home company, whenever his busy schedule of guesting worldwide allows. Sometimes he can seem somewhat indifferent, but this is a 100% major dance star who nobody easily ignores.

It's the terrific power of his well-centred pirouettes and the arrowy strength of his jumps which are so imposing, and enhance his roles such as Solor and Prince Siegfried.

This tall and atheletic blond dancer is also known as an attentive and reliable partner, occasionally to Darcey Bussell. However it is with the Kirov that he shows his true colours, as a man of burning eyes, powering noiselessly through the air with all his heart as well as all his might. {kirov dancers}
