2000-2001 could be a season of change for ENB. Angela Rippon becomes chairman and it is Derek Deane's last year. The press release in October ended the speculation about whether he was staying or going and started the guessing about who is going to replace him.

Derek Deane will leave a company that is 'thinning on top', with Tamara Rojo's move to the Royal Ballet there are only 2 female principals (one of whom is pregnant). Mercifully, they will be supplemented by Oaks/Edur who are listed as Regular Guest Principals and Durante/Kumakawa who will almost certainly add some excitement. The situation will inevitably provide the youngsters with the opportunity to do principal roles early and at the time of writing a 1st year corps de ballet, Fernanda Oliveira is making her debut as Odile.

There is a shortage of good male senior dancers and when ENB gets one they tend to have a short shelf life. Last season, saw three men (Altin Kaftira, Leo Zen and Felipe Diaz) come and go. Hopefully the impressive Vladislav Bubnov (principal from Scottish Ballet) who has been recruited as a soloist will reverse this trend.

The dancer views in this section were updated in October 2000 and will be next updated in October 2001. You may be interested in the ealier version of this page which we hold in archive - ENB dancers 1999-2000.

One half of the prize-winning Estonian husband and wife team. They return to ENB as regular guest principals. Agnes is a beautiful blond, the epitome of a ballerina. Perhaps more to the point she is beautifully schooled and always gives excellent performances. Agnes, with husband Thomas Edur, represent the very tops particularly in the classical repertoire.

You never tire of seeing these two doing the same thing in the same production year after year. {top}

The other half of the prize-winning Estonian husband and wife team that are much in demand as guests all around the world.

Thomas is a tall dark danceur noble and a superb and subtle actor. He is absolutely heroic on stage and is the Prince personified. Beautifully schooled and consistently gives excellent performances. High jumps softly landed are a speciality and he is rightly praised by all the critics. {top}

A small beautifully schooled Cuban very much like Teddy Kumakawa - a barrel of fireworks and real virtuoso competition dancer. He can turn incredibly fast and has the most impressive jump. As a result Chang excels as the Gopak in the Nutcracker and as the Jester in Swan Lake. He certainly has a presence in these roles and tends to hint that he is cheeky and a bit of a flirt - which is just what is needed as the wayward boyfriend in Coppelia. He is a wonderful Don Q and shows off his remarkable strength at doing on occasion a one arm lift. To top it all he even has his own web site! {top}

An oh-so-well schooled (Kirov trained) Russian dancer with an unforced athletic ability who can also land jumps softly - bliss!. He can be reminiscent of Baryishnikov, with a hint of a sense of humour on stage.

In the showpieces such as the Don Q and Le Corsaire pas de deux he is stunning to watch- his barrel turns are formidable. He was a wonderfully supportive partner in Sleeping Beauty. {top}

Daria Klimentova

A prize winning Czech dancer who came from Scottish Ballet. She has a near perfect ballet physique and appears to have a Russian technique and presentation and is lovely in the Classics. Just superb in the Bluebird pas de deux when she danced with great precision and authority with the most beautifully held arabesques that seemed to stretch and lift upwards for ever.

Daria is unfortunately not the automatic first choice for principal roles and so does not get her fair share of the limelight. This ought to change and she is a favourite of many of the ENB regulars. Note that at the start of the season Daria is busy giving birth! {top}

A small Italian dancer from the Royal Ballet School who rapidly rose through the ranks to Principal. She is a skilled technician with high extensions, lots of attack and can turn like a top. She is a little girl with a big personality! Despite excelling in the flashy stuff like the Don Q pas de deux she has matured as an actress and was a most convincing Juliet.

With Daria pregnant, Monica is sure to have a busy early season. I always felt that she was a little overshadowed by Tamara Rojo because she had the same look and feel. Now with Tamara gone, she will hopefully get more attention and opening nights. {top}

A very talented prize winning French dancer who has risen rapidly through the ranks to soloist.

He moves like a gazelle, high extensions, beautiful jumps and lands softly. His Gopak in the Nutcracker is stunning. {top}

An ex Birmingham Royal Ballet dancer who joined ENB a few years ago and is newly promoted.

Small and slight but very strong and has a big jump which has been put to good use in the Neapolitan dance in Swan Lake when she is hardly on the ground. {top}

An tall dark (until recently when the hair has gone through a dappled blond phase) Australian dancer from the Australian ballet who is a natural choice for the Prince, which he has played in most of ENB Classics already.

He is elegant and his movement beautifully defined with nicely held balances though he can be a bit tense. {top}

An English dancer from the Royal Ballet School who was promoted through the ranks to senior Soloist. She is quite reliable in the roles she has done but appears to be difficult to partner and is perhaps best enjoyed dancing solo. {top}

A Japanese dancer from the ENB school who has been rapidly promoted through the ranks to Senior Soloist.

Definitely the current favourite. She is a charming dancer who does Clara and Aurora with such natural innocence and surprisingly got the opening night of Sleeping Beauty (at the Albert Hall too). She dances diligently and her stage presence is developing. {top}

An tall, dark English dancer who has been categorised by the ENB regulars as 'Ballet beefcake' because of his physique and bearing.

He has done some good roles such as Tybalt (which he did with just the right anount of menace) and his Gopak is explosive. {top}

Alexis Oliveira
Just a few years out of the ENB school and recently promoted to Coryphee. {top}
