Gary Avis Soloists Jean Luc Burke One to watch Maria Kotchekova 2002-2003 had its highs and lows for the company. Skoog is still there, Christopher Nourse (executive director) is not. The highs would be the introduction of new pieces, Drink to me only, Melody on the Move and Wayne McGregor's 2 Human: and the choreographic workshop pieces shown at The Linbury. The lows were the absence of Daria Klimentova for most of the season through injury, Hollywood Smash and Grab and the realisation that the company's financial position was deteriorating. Probably a good year artistically and a bad year financially. Comings include two new faces from ENB school which regularly features in the intake. Caroline Duprot left to join the Royal Ballet, Elena Glurdjidze stayed and Yosvani Ramos and Simone Clarke were promoted to principal. The hierarchy was simplified: removing the rank of junior soloist and 'promoting' quite a few dancers to the rank of soloist. A talented youngster from the Bolshoi, Maria Kotchekova has arrived - she has impressed so far: I hope she will stay. If she stays: what should she expect from ENB? At the time of writing, an improved Nutcracker which hopefully will grow on the ballet lovers (the kids love it), no small scale tour, loads of Swan Lakes, and a degree of belt tightening financially that won't be known until the Hammersmith season is over.
The dancer views in this section were updated in February 2004 and will be next updated in about a year. You may be interested in earlier versions of this page which we hold in archive:
The dancers' notes are written by Margaret Lumley.
