American dancer and choreographer Alvin Ailey formed his company in 1958. It's a mostly but not exclusively black company, designed to celebrate an essential part of the American multicultural mix. A repertory company, from its birth it has included work by outside choreographers as well as by Ailey himself. Since Ailey's death in 1989 it has been directed by former dancer Judith Jamison. The company style is a mix of classic American modern dance with ballet and jazz, and many works in the repertoire show an African influence. The emphasis is usually on very strong, and exciting, technique but Ailey was eqully concerned with drama and personality. The company ends most of its shows with Ailey's exhilarating masterpiece, Revelations, one of the classics of 20th century dance. |
