Search Help

To find information about a topic, simply type in a few keywords. The more detailed your query, the more relevant your results.

Our search engine also comes with some advanced capabilities to help you find exactly what you're looking for. These capabilities are best shown with a few examples:

Translated: require Scottish, require ballet
Finds "Scottish Ballet", "Scottish ballet", and "..in ballet where the Scottish connection...".
Does not find the lowercase "scottish ballet", nor the abbreviated "Scot ballet".

Translated: forbid Scottish, require ballet
Finds "Royal Ballet", "Northern Ballet Theatre", and lowercase "ballet".
Does not find "Scottish dancers" nor "Scottish Ballet".

Translated: prefer Scottish, require ballet
Finds "Royal Ballet", "Scottish ... ballet", and "Scottish Ballet".
Documents with both terms appear higher in the list.

Translated: require the phrase "English National Ballet"
Finds "English National Ballet".
Does not find "English ballet" nor "ballet as performed by the English National company".

Translated: require royal (case insensitive), require words starting with "bus"
Finds "Royal tour bus", "Royal Ballets Darcey Bussell".
The asterisk is a wildcard representing any four or fewer characters.

Translated: require Venus (case sensitive), require pictures, forbid planet, prefer images
First lists "pictures and images of Venus", then "Venus pictures".
Does not list lowercase "venus picture", nor forbidden "picture of planet Venus".

Translated: ignores common words like where, is, and the - requires words containing "frog"
Finds "frog", "frogleg", and "bullfrog".
To suppress the ignore feature, use quotes, as in "Where is the *frog*?".

Note on case sensitivity - only words or phrases containing an upper case character will be treated as case sensitive. A search on "usa" will match "Usa", "USA", and "usA", while the term "USA" matches only its uppercase version.

The asterisk is a powerful search tool, but has some limitations. It cannot span words - that is, the query "powerfu*earch" would not match the first sentence of this paragraph - and it can represent at most four letters or numbers. To avoid overly broad searches, the asterisk can only be used in words or phrases which have at least three alpha-numeric characters. A search for "th*" would be ignored.

Finding Information on Ballet.co

The search facility on this page searches all the standard (static) pages of information on this site - currently some 700+ pages. But we also hold information in other forms such as the databases for Reviews and Listings and also the postings on the Postings page. Searching these is a bit different;

Reviews
Easy Search
Advanced Search
The reviews database contains links to both our own reviews and reviews held on other sites, typically newspapers like The Telegraph. The search on this page will bring up all our own reviews but would not list these valuable external reviews. Its therefore preferable to use the reviews search facility to find all he reviews of interest.

The Easy Search has some links that enables rapid searching on various companies and dance names whereas the Advanced Search allows you to search on these plus date and (ultimately) many other criteria as well.

Listings
Easy Search
Advanced Search
At any one time we usually have full details of over 600 ballet and dance performances. Just listing these out would not be very helpful in finding exactly the performances you want. The Easy Search page has many links that enables rapid searching by company, ballet (or dance) name and dancer for example. The Advanced Search enables you to search on dates, times and locations as well (and all in any combination!).

Postings
Postings Search
At any one time we hold 600-1000 postings and the postings search facility enables these to be rapidly searched. Occasionally we delete old postings; usually when we are starting to run out of space! At some point however we might well move to keep many more postings on line.

Chat Page Information on the Chat Page is liable to be deleted after only a week or two and for that reason we don't have a search facility associated with it.
