‘Following Sir Fred’s Steps: a Conference Celebrating Ashton’s Work’, was held at Roehampton Institute, London, 12-13 November 1994, in collaboration with the Society for Dance Research, the Royal Ballet, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. The conference committee consisted of: Stephanie Jordan (Head of Dance, Roehampton Institute; Chair), Andrée Grau (Senior Research Fellow, Roehampton Institute; Conference Administrator), Angela Kane (Senior Lecturer, Roehampton Institute), Ann Nugent (editor, Dance Theatre Journal), Jane Pritchard (Archivist, Rambert Dance Company and English National Ballet), and Bonnie Rowell (Lecturer, Roehampton Institute). The committee was supported by a group of advisors: Monica Mason (Assistant Director, Royal Ballet), Alastair Macaulay (critic, Financial Times), Pamela May (former ballerina, Royal Ballet), and Sir Peter Wright (Artistic Director, Birmingham Royal Ballet). A number of scribes documented the workshops, lecture-demonstrations and panel discussions: Henrietta Bannerman, Elizabeth Marshall, Frances Palmer, Helen Roberts, and Linda Willcox. The lecture-demonstrations and panels were video recorded by Robert Jude (Royal Ballet Video Archive). Lucy Carter, as technician, ensured that no technical problems occurred, Irene Glaister (Honorary Treasurer, Society for Dance Research) helped with the original planning of the budget, and Jenny Johnstone, as secretary to the conference, was pivotal to the organisational success. Thanks finally to David Leonard (Dance Books), our publisher, and to Sanjoy Roy (Dance Books), who gave invaluable editorial assistance in putting this book together, and also produced the typographical design.
I would like to thank everyone for their commitment, including all of those who have not been named individually, students and staff helpers, and other supporting personnel. Without all their hard work, the conference and this book would not have been possible. Last, but not least, I would like to thank the Arts Council of England, the Linbury Trust, Miss V. L. Clore’s 1967 Charitable Trust, and the Roehampton Institute for giving us financial support and believing in what we were trying to achieve.
