"Painful calf muscles"
Can anyone tell me if any of their teenage athletes have gone through this. My 13 year old daughter has come home for Christmas, whilst being at home she has developed a painful calf muscle, we dont't know whether this is linked to her very first menstual cycle, she definately has not grown. She says it is particularly sore when she goes onto demi point. Everyday she has been gently stretching out her muscle and generaly limbering anyway, but the pain is still there, she has been keeping the muscle warm and having warm baths but to no avail, any ideas or suggestions as to what this could be would be appreciated.

During the menstrual cycle there is a change in the body chemistry which includes the amount of water the body retains and eliminates which could affect muscles.

She should also check her street shoes.

I have always found that a banana a day keeps the cramps away.

If it hurts whilst she is on demi-pointe indicates that it doesn't like being compressed. So very gentle stretching is a good idea. There should be a stretch for every compression - so a good demi-pliť for every rise onto demi-pointe.

This is especially important after jumping - and even more especially for petit allegro.

Hope something I've said helps.

Thankyou Anjuli, she has read your advice and has understood what you have said, so she is going to put it into practice. It is strange as it started in one calf and now it is in the other. Street shoes well after a lot of discussion we have bought her at last the highly fashionable boots that everyone is wearing, we all know what they are they begin with a U, since wearing them she has complained about her bunion and her feet hurting, the sole on the boots are sturdy but they are heavy bulky things yuk. I have heard about bananas so I think she will appreciate that bit of advice also.
