"Sylvie Guillem Shows ALL PERFORMANCES Cancelled"

Press Release
10 August 2004

SYLVIE GUILLEM's
STORIES OF LOVE & PASSION

AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE, COVENT GARDEN

9 - 14 AUGUST, 2004

ALL PERFORMANCES CANCELLED

Following Saturday's announcement to cancel three performances of Stories of Love & Passion on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday of this week, it is with the utmost regret that Victor Hochhauser now announces the cancellation of all performances.

On Wednesday 4 August, Miss Guillem strained a tendon in her left ankle while rehearsing. She consulted with the foremost ankle specialist in the country, and underwent a scan. The injury is not serious, but 3 weeks were recommended for healing. However, in order not to let people down and to continue with the season, Miss Guillem was hoping for a miraculous recovery sufficient to enable her to dance at the end of this week. However, today's consultation with a physiotherapist advised that the injury has not healed sufficiently to permit Miss Guillem to dance without risk of aggravating the injury. Regretfully, therefore, the final four performances have been cancelled in order to allow Miss Guillem time to rest and recover completely before the beginning of next season.

Miss Guillem was to have danced Masha in MacMillan's Winter Dreams (partnered by both Massimo Murru and Nicolas Le Riche as Vershinin, and Anthony Dowell as her husband, Kulygin) and the role of Marguerite in Ashton Marguerite & Armand (when she would have been partnered by Nicolas Le Riche). The third ballet of the evening was Alberto Alonso's Carmen Suite, created for Maya Plisetskaya and The Bolshoi Ballet in 1967 and performed on the stage of the Royal Opera House in 1969. Miss Guillem had invited Isabelle Ciaravola from the Paris Opra Ballet to recreate the title-role.

Miss Guillem said: "I am very upset and disappointed about the cancellation. I am not a dancer prone to injury and it is very rare for me to be off. This season has been planned since November and I was looking forward to presenting it at the Royal Opera House, and to dancing for everyone."

Victor and Lilian Hochhauser said: "We are deeply distressed at having to cancel Sylvie Guillem's season at Covent Garden this week. It is a huge disappointment to all of us, particularly since Sylvie has rarely suffered an injury. In the 50 years we have been involved in the arts, this is the first time that we have had to cancel a major season and we apologise most sincerely to the thousands of patrons who have bought tickets for this unique event."

Full refunds for the season are available through the Box Office of the Royal Opera House. Ticket holders should write to the following address, enclosing their tickets:

Well...what were those alternative show suggestions again? Anyone know the likelyhood of getting two tickets under thirty quid at such short notice? I dunno about musicals, don't think I've ever been to one.

The Hochhauser quote certainly sounds as if they are sorry for everyone.

The Guillem quote sounds as if she is sorry for herself.

For goodness sake, what more do you want her to say? The woman was seen on crutches and was still hoping to carry on with the show. It's an unfortunate turn of event for everyone involved, and I am sure no one is more devastated than she is. I am glad that the only 'loss' for me out of all this is six free evenings and one free afternoon!

what a crass and ignorant thing to write ! if she only cared about herself she would have allowed ALL of the shows to be cancelled as soon as she was told she had to rest for 3 weeks, she could have been sunning herself on a beach somewhere instead of trying to get fit for a grueling week of rehearsal and performances ! she certainly doesn't need to dance for the money ! people like you expect a lot for the price of a ticket, what a shame that she didn't do the decent thing and allow herself to be pelted with rotten vegetables and fruit in the stocks in covent garden !

Desparate times call for desparate measures! A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum at the National has been very well reviewed and Anything Goes at Drury Lane is most enjoyable according to my sister-in-law who's seen it twice. Or there's Romeo and Juliet at the Globe (interesting place if you've never been there).

Becca: I know the critics have panned it on its first outing, but you could try Singin' in the Rain at Sadlers Wells. If you like 'Moses Supposes' you'll probably like the rest of it and SW is a nice theatre. Plus, I reckon the production will probably be improving by the day, given the commitment of its director and cast. Tickets 13-40 and there's a Sat.matinee. Nearest underground - The Angel - only one stop down the line from Kings X. Sat.performance finishes around 5.30 so if you get your skates on your could catch the 6.0 or 6.30 pm train home.

Ann: Yes we've just been discussing it and that's our first alternative choice. We're booked on the 7.30 train (left plenty of time to go stage-dooring). Unfortunately we can't do anything about it until my dad gets back from Yeovil (Darlington FC are playing there!) tomorrow afternoon, so hopefully there will still be some decent views left by then.

John: My English Lit. teacher keeps nagging us all to go to the Globe so that's a possibility too - I think it's an all-woman Much Ado in the afternoon - luckily we didn't book for the evening show! And I heard a bit of 'A Funny Thing...' on the Front row a few weeks ago anf thought it sounded good. Time to broaden my horizons!

I think I'd probably go for "A funny thing..." for rarity value (I liked the Front Row piece), although oh heck what was the other musical? I think it was Cole Porter. Anything Goes? Perhaps? got rave reviews. I call going from your neck of the woods to Yeovil TRUE dedication!!!! I used to have to go there for meetings regularly when I lived in Surrey and finally I said to my boss that I wouldn't go there and back in a day again (stressful meetings, nearly fell asleep on wintry drive home).

My dad and brother are a bit obsessed with football. They get back at 4am, not tomorrow afternoon - I assumed four o'clock meant in sociable hours! Takes a long time, but not THAT long. But then he'll probably be in bed all day. We'll sort something out tomorrow...

A quick post from a Londoner. If you go to the booth in Leicester Square, you can get half price tickets for various shows. These are always the top price seats, so you can get wonderful seats in the Stalls half price. Not sure what the opening times are, think it is 10.00am to 7.00pm.

And I can recommend "Anything Goes", I really enjoyed it.

Well, don't know about anyone else but apparently ( I was out) we had a phone call from the ROH this morning telling us that it had been cancelled, which is something.

Oops got Singin' in the Rain tickets this morning before reading any of these posts - not great ones, I think second circle k21 and 22, so hopefull the view's OK. Wells is square I seem to remember.

Was it from your friend Marco Compagnoni, Becca? I think after the publicity of your campaign re the Overture scheme in the Dancing Times they must be SO terrified of you at the ROH that you're getting special treatment
