Breathing Light into Ballet
This is the title of a fascinating piece by Roslyn Sulcas in the NY Times on lighting for dance, centering on an interview with the distinguished lighting designer Jennifer Tipton:
‘The way a dance or theater work is lighted affects the audience as crucially and subliminally as the swelling strains that cue a love scene or a frightening moment in a film. ..Like that film music, they critically affect the way we feel about what we see. (When the lighting is nondescript or tacky, as it can frequently be, particularly in story ballets, it can be notably detrimental.)’
