"ABT's new Sleeping Beauty, and summer season"

Right, ABT's Sleeping Beauty opens in just about 2 weeks... and while there was discussion of it earlier, I've been waiting for folks to comment... especially as it was in Links just a bit ago that.....

*Gelsey Kirkland* will be returning to the stage as Carabosse!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*sighs*.

Amongst other things, ABT is also doing Bayadere.... and I believe Hallberg is getting his debut as Solor?

In any case, whomever is going, must report back. And I'm happy if all you talk about is Ms. Kirkland.

I have tickets for - I think it is July - bought the tickets so long ago - I've forgotten the date - well, the calandar remembers. The calandar says July 21st.

I hope to be able to go.

As for Gelsey Kirkland, she has been mentioned on this board before. Gelsey is quite on another level than any other dancer I've been privileged to have seen.

I saw her dance La Sylphide with Patrick Bissell way back in the 1980's. It was a Sylphide like no other. She is a sylph - it was no act.

Another time I saw her lead a small group of dancers on a tour. At the time she was in the midst of her difficulties and she could not dance what had been scheduled. Instead she simply did barre work on the stage....and that was magical. As soon as she moved - one knew this was a very special dancer.

She is simply incomparable to anyone else I have ever seen.

I hope this collaboration with ABT is the beginning of another phase of her artistic life. A talent such as her's is an asset in every sense.

I understand she is married and her husband was part of the creative process for this new Sleeping Beauty. I wish her every happiness.

If anyone has further information to add....I'd love to hear it.

Aside from costaging the new SB with Kevin Mckencie, she is also scheduled to perform Carabosse(alternating with Martine Van Hamel, another well-respected former ABT ballerina). Unfortunately, i can't go to her scheduled performances.
She is also coaching the dancers in this production.

Has anyone been to see the Sleeping Beauty yet? Not great reviews from the US press, but Ballet.coers know best!

It would take me all day to comment about ABT's new Sleeping Beauty... and various dancers.... But be sure to read the reviews from the NYTimes (Alastair MaCauley's), Newsday, The NYPost (Clive Barnes') and The NYObserver (Robert Gottlieb's). They're all excellent.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by the reviews being excellent. Except for Newsday, it was pretty universally, and in my opinion, rightly, criticized in terms not seen since, well, since NYCB's Romeo and Juliet about a month ago.

I thought the reviews were excellently done/written, not that ABT's new Sleeping Beauty is an excellent production.

In case any interested parties have missed it, Rachel and I each have a Sleeping Beauty review posted in a new thread which we mistakenly created. So, feel free to have a look and then come back and tell us what you think.

My review, condensed: "Three million dollars sure buys an awful lot of stupid."

http://www.ballet.co.uk/dcforum/happening/6332.html

All dances are too long, but some are more too-long than others.

Eric, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry when I read your review! Sounds like you didn't, either! Having read it, and the others, it makes me really appreciate the RB's current version. I guess you won't be able to catch it Stateside unless you go to Mexico (good excuse for a vacation!!). Alternatively, Philly is much closer to NY...worth the trip if only to see Tamara as O/O and Mara as Juliet.

I saw the Beauty last night. Charming and fresh, but the same time respectful to the legacy of Marius Petipa. Good job, Kevin. Kudos and 5 stars!!!

More to come. Please stay tuned
