"Royal Ballet Wheeldon/McGregor/Balanchine bill"

It's the general reheasal today and John Ross is also along to take photographs which we should have up for tomorrow nights premiere.

This thread is to discuss the 5 performances and also the reheasal, so do give us a heads up if you go. Remember though that today is a reheasal and not to be dissected every last which way...

OK....so I won't dissect! What I will say is that this triple bill is marvelous, with Chroma being the real highlight for me. I really liked the Wheeldon as well, with a particularly superb pdd danced by Gary Avis and Darcey Bussell, who was in fine fettle today. I don't want to ruin things for those who weren't there today, but suffice to say that once again Gary proves that he is one of the most solid, technically brilliant partners to grace the ROH stage these days.

4T looked a bit ragged in parts, but the solos were danced well. Again, Darcey looked particularly good here, as did Carlos and Ed Watson especially. Ed was very busy today, dancing in all three pieces, all of which are just the type of choreography in which he excels, and excel he did. If Mr B were alive today, I'm sure he'd love Ed Watson!

It was also excellent to see Eric Underwood dance, finally. A shame he wasn't in 4T, but he was superb in the other two pieces. Lauren partnered him both times (replacing an injured Zen in DGV) and I must say they looked great together.

I loved the staging of Chroma; it looked like a movie screen, with very simple but effective lighting and sets. The lighting was one of the stars of DGV...set to Michael Nyman's relentless, pulsating score (which I really liked; Wheeldon always chooses such appropriate and good music for his choreography), it was very effective in highlighting the dancers at just the right moments. I'm so glad I'm going back tomorrow night, and hope to go back after that, as well. There is so much going on in Chroma and in DGV that it will take a good few times to take it all in...and those are times I'm looking forward to.

What a stunning performance by everyone, from the musicians, to the set designers, the costume designers, the lighting designers (Lucy Carter and Jennifer Tipton, created an extraordinary effect to the new works), the choreographers and, last but not least, the dancers (and of course the encouraging audience).

This production truly exhibit the company's varied strength and excellence, especially when this mixed bill is sharing the main stage with Sleeping Beauty; audiences are fortunate to see the diversified talents of the company.

Thank you Ms Mason for this Mixed Bill... one could only ask for more....

personally, i wish this production would be sell out for every performance, for the dancers and the producers truly deserved it....

I can but agree with all the above. It is a truly glorious triple bill (also wish to thank Monica Mason for this)
If I say anything more it would just be repeating what has already been said. Just want to get it out.
Well done to all the Royal Ballet dancers and the choreographers.
PS I do love S McRae, he is a very talented dancer and sure we will see more of him in the future. He is so full of energy and enthusiasm and he certainly deserves whatever comes his way but I found his enthusiasm in Chroma should have been more controlled, toned down so to speak. He would have shown himself at his superb best with more self-control. But that is my personal opinion.
