Gorgeous pics, as usual... and excited to see who else will be Dawn and Prayer (in these pics, Kobayashi and Arestis, respectively).

And some people are questioning whether or not ballet will still be around in 50 years!!!

Yes, very nice pictures, especially of Roberta Marquez.

Am out the door soon, but enjoyed this immensely yesterday (the same cast as in the photos). I was especially happily pleased by Samodurov - I just wish that he would keep his character throughout the difficult and tiring parts of his solo! Very happy and the loads of children giggling away (at the appropriate times, along with the adults) and warning Franz 'be careful, he's right behind you!'.

A lovely, sunny, beautifully danced Swanhilda from Marianela Nunez this afternoon, with Thiago Soares well cast as her gallant though 2-timing boyfriend Franz. Will Tuckett was grand as the devious Dr Coppelius, with some very nice touches in his acting .Alexandra Ansanelli sparkled as Aurora though Gemma Sykes was a slightly hesitant Prayer, she just seemed a little nervous? Generally I thought the whole company were in good form, with a particular mention for lead 'peasants' Stephen McRae,Francesca Filpi,Ben Gartside and Hikaru Kobayashi. And Gary Avis was a treat as the Burgomaster!

Saturday afternoon's Coppelia, with Marianela Nunez as Swanilda and Thiago Soares as Franz was a splendid performance, well supported by the entire cast. There are no superlatives for Marianela and Thiago. They were superlative.

This was, I believe, Thiago's first full-length role at Covent Garden in his first season as a principal dancer, and he was really fired up for it. Those with very, very sharp hearing could have heard him punching the air backstage following one of his brilliant variations in the third act pas de deux.

I don't think it required sharp hearing. He nailed the variation and it sounded like a world cup final goal being scored offstage. It was a terrific moment and you couldn't help feeling pleased for him (although I heard one kindly lady behind me wonder whether he had hurt himself)

While agreeing there are no superlatives to satisfyingly describe the supreme talents of Marianela Nunez. I would think that it is fair to say folowing last seasons performances as Lise, Sylvia, Aurora, The Lilac Fairy and now this seasons great start both as Swanilda and in Voluntaries she is the most fascinating and most satisfying artist currently to be seen performing in any Artform anywhere in the world.
I am a hoplessly infatuated fan but I notice many toughminded and discerning critics seem to agree.

Nunez is a great dancer and I defend anybodies right to declare their undying infatuation - but I'm not sure I see critics lining up to declare her the 'most satisfying artist currently to be seen performing in any Artform anywhere in the world." Gulp!

I agree with Bruce that to include ALL artforms and the WHOLE world is maybe going a bit far! - after all, how many people can say they have even experienced all the artforms in all the world!? ....... BUT the point is, to me at least and obviously to many others, when we see her on stage this is perhaps how she makes us *feel*

Of course she is not the only principal with dazzling technique and intelligent artistry but I can't think of any others who can deliver it all with quite such joyous abandon and blissful delight such that it is as if she hadn't really trained to be a dancer at all, hadn't rehearsed the role, but just started dancing as she felt like dancing in that moment. I think that is what makes her so special.

I was also there for the Coppelia 14th Oct matinee both Marianela and Thiago were on top form, and I think really suit each other very well as partners.

There are no

Er, isn't that in itself a contradiction in terms??

Nuñez bubbled and sparkled her way through the whole performance, and was a joy to watch. My companion and I just sat there shaking our heads in disbelief during her Act III variation, in which the control she exerted in some backward hops on point, I think in arabesque, was quite amazing. Soares looked rather more at ease in the part of Franz than in his previous performances of what I think is the only vaguely similar role he's danced, namely Colas in La Fille Mal Gardée, and portrayed a pretty thick Franz, more callous and inconsiderate than any I think I've seen befor
