"Rambert in Newcastle"

Possibly the best I've seen Rambert do for a good many years. A beautifully balanced programme:

A Steel Garden - ch. Christopher Bruce, music by David C. Heath.
Judgment of Paris - ch. Antony Tudor, music by Kurt Weill.
Divine Influence - ch. Martin Joyce (Rambert's home-grown dancer/choreographer) set to Beethoven.
Constant Speed - ch. Mark Baldwin, music by Lehar.

A Steel Garden: At first I settled down to enjoy it. The tubular bells gave off nice, soothing vibes then, OMG! that crashing, jangling music and it did go on a mite too long.

Judgment of Paris: Pure delight! The three prostitutes - Amy Hollingsworth, Mikaela Polley and Pieter Symonds pulled out all the stops and had the audience in stitches. They were well supported by a dead-pan and nonchalant, Simon Cooper - the waiter - and Renaud Wiser as the drunk.

Next up Divine Influence: Well who could resist Beethoven? Especially so beautifully danced by Martin Joyce and Angela Towler.

Constant Speed: I simply loved this - a mix of serious dance with a spot of comedy thrown in. The choice of Lehar as the composer was inspired.

All-in-all an excellent programme which left you with a feel-good factor and wanting more. Rambert are on excellent form.

Well done Mark Baldwin!

I saw the same programme tonight in Newcastle and agree with Ann's assessment.

I found "A Steel Garden" rather impenetrable. The combination of very abstract dance with very abstract music (most of it on tubular bells - and much of that played by the dancers) proved rather difficult for my rather literal mind. The big duet in the middle of the piece was very impressive.

I loved "Judgment of Paris": clever, witty, exquisite use of music by Kurt Weill and some wonderful 'bad' dancing from the three old tarts.

"Divine Influence" is a wonderful duet, showing off a huge range of movement and beautifully set to the last movement of Beethoven's 'mmonlight' sonata. Lovely performances from Martin Joyce and Angela Towler.

The last piece "Constant Speed" was, as its title suggests, an all action spectacular. I particularly liked the use of the music of Lehar and the juxtaposition with it of contradictory stage action. Indeed at one point, there is a waltz playing, two dancers dancing conventionally to that, while a group of men are creating movement mayhem around them.

I have seen fuller houses for modern dance at the Theatre Royal but the reception was very warm.
