"RB Sleeping Beauty: 26 Feb"

Some unintended drama tonight, I'm afraid: Kobborg did his Act 2 solo but shortly after his next entrance the curtain came down, and Monica Mason appeared to say that he'd injured himself and couldn't continue; Federico Bonelli would take over as soon as he'd got changed. We waited about 20 minutes for the act to continue - Bonelli got a warm welcome and did very well in the circs, though it must have been nervewracking for both him and Cojocaru. Kobborg has damaged an ankle ankle but there's no news yet of how serious it is.

Mara Galeazzi also disappeared during the evening - she did her Prologue solo but vanished before the end of the scene, and someone else came on for her in the Jewels section of Act 3.

Best wishes to Johan for a speedy recovery....from a selfish point of view, by March 19th when I'm supposed to see him and Alina in Mayerling...last time I was supposed to see them Johan was injured so we got the Cope/Rojo cast instead (which was brilliant). I would like to see him this time though!

Looks like some of the gremlins Mandy reported about the rehearsal have crept into the performance. Let's hope the rest of the run goes well.

I hope the injury is not serious, for Johan in first instance, of course, and for me as well!
I’m coming from Milan on the 19th for Mayerling expressly for him (...and Alina, as obvious), and I’m coming on the 6th for Alina & Johan matinee (I bought this ticket in October!).
Please, bring us up to date on this!

I was sitting very close to the stage in the Stalls Circle on R/H side and during Johan's opening brief solo at the beginning of Act II there was a very obvious and extremely uncharacteristic wobble (particularly noticeable on his left foot/ankle) on the landing for the second of his tours en l'air and he looked uncomfortable, although since the Prince is uncomfortable with life at this point in the ballet he was able to disguise it well!

It was interesting that Monica Mason has been sitting in the Grand Tier for the Prologue/Act I, which started 7/8 minutes late (for what reason, I wonder?), but was clearly down in the wings and able to be on stage to make an announcement very quickly about Johan's injury at the strategic moment just before the Lilac Fairy's appearance to the Prince.

Given what happened when Alina had to retire from Manon last year (the mad dash from home by Taxi for Jaimie Tapper to take her place), it was also interesting that Federico Bonelli was standing by (although not changed for the part). Does anyone know if it is policy to have dancers ready to step in for the Principal roles or was Federico there for a specific reason?

Poor Natasha - her SB seems to be jinxed. She lost her Aurora before the end on the opening night last March and now she loses her Prince on the opening night of this season.

More considered thoughts on the performance to follow....

Graham

I had thought Kobborg looked unhappy from the start and I wasn't surprised at the announcement, although still distressed for him. I wonder if he has been over-dancing? That aside, I thought it was brilliant and that the Lilac Fairy and the Bluebird, danced by Lauren Cuthbertson and Ivan Putrov respectively were particularly impressive, apart from Alina (my favourite dancer, although I loved Sarah Wildor and still lament her departure)and Bonelli. Is it true that the main dancers don't have understudies in the House? My daughters dance and have done some professional musical theatre - eldest daughter's dearest wish, youngest daughter is torn between ballet and jazz!- and there is always an understudy at hand. This is the first time I have been able to get this website to send mails, (although I've used it a lot, especially for dancewear - thank for the links, Bruce, Thelma at Wear-Moi is a treasure!)and I am so pleased I can join in now!

In response to this, citing S.F. Ballet as my example, and I think the
Joffrey as well, it is usual to have company members sign in by 7 even when they are not dancing or taking the warm up class, specifically for
such reasons. I cannot cite instances, but I do know such sudden
substitutes have occurred, but infrequently, since Tomasson became artistic director. Usually, however, the substitutes happen before the
curtain goes up and the alternates are announced before the orchestra
starts.

Congratulations to Bonelli and Alina for pulling through the performance so successfully after being paired within just a few minutes.
And all cheers for Ivan Putrov as Bluebird. Unlike some Fairies who were diligently executing their steps Ivan was DANCING and his excellent jumps were not tricks but an integral part of that beautiful dance.

Major changes to the staging in the Prologue and Act II have greatly enhanced the production, and the Lilac Fairy is now very much the centre of attention at the key moments.

I thought Cojocaru was absolutely radiant in Act I, especially in the amazing series of fast turns she did in the solo.

The late start, and the fact that Kobborg wandered off stage during rhe court dances makes me wonder if his fitness was already suspect, and so his cover (clearly Bonelli) would be kept on standby.

Cuthbertson was graciousness personified as the Lilac, and Morera stood out in the Prologue as Temperament. McGorian was a particularly lovely Queen.

Putrov danced a most outstanding Bluebird, and was well matched with Salerno

According to Debra Craine in The Times this morning, Bonelli wasn't there to cover but just happened to be watching! Just as
well or it could have made a very quick change for Putrov.

Oh, dear, I hope it's not too serious and that he recovers soon. I must admit, though, I did think he was a little more ... subdued, shall we say ... than I expected in the triple bill this week, and I wondered if there was a slight problem then... But perhaps it's just me. There are a lot of injuries/indispositions at the moment, and I'm very aware that the dancers have been dancing pretty much without a break, apart from their short "half-term" one, since before Christmas.

Thank you for letting me know what had happened to poor Johann Kobborg. My youngest daughter was beside herself when Monica Mason appeared - my eldest and I thought it was a bomb threat at first. To show how observant we are( or what rotten seats row V in the orchestra stalls are!) we didn't even know poor Mara had not come back on! All credit to Alina and Federico Bonelli - they must have been scared stiff and he is going to be a credit to the ROH and a friend I have turned on to Alina Cojocaru has just described her to me as a 'national treasure'! Despite the circumstances, she still lit up the stage again last night.

I'm afraid I can't agree with Fiz about row V in the stalls. To me they (but particularly V12-20) and row W are some of the best seats in the house.

I'm greatly saddened that Mr Kobborg is injured and wish him well for a complete recovery (rather that just speedy).

We were right on the end nearest the right hand aisle, and it was fine for my husband, who is 6', but I am 5'4", and both of my teenage daughters are shorter than that - the youngest spent the evening trying to see between people's shoulder gaps and the three of us had much the same problem! We are going to see 'Mayerling' with Alina nd Kobborg (I very much hope!) - not the kids, just me and my husband! - and will be in C 22 and 23. I'll probably dislocate my neck, but it's worth it!

Dear Fiz,

Lucky you.

I think myself and a friend are booked for Jonny Cope on 26 March. If it's not impolite, have you considered using the kiddy whoopee cushions that are available from the entrance foyer desk free of charge?

I'm only 5ft 6ins and have absolutely no scruples whatsoever in using one to overcome either gentle giants or ladies with big hair.

Dear Martin,
I know, I'm thrilled - my husband bought them as Valentine's Day presents for us both - mind you, the real Mayerling story is not a love story!. I did not know th ROH did booster seats. They did when they were 'in exile' at the Festival Hall, but I've never seen them at the ROH. I'll ask next time! Thanks! Fiz.

Kobborg's injury is apparently not too serious and is expected to respond to rest and treatment in a reasonably short time. He definitely won't dance on Monday - Bonelli will do it - but there is no decision yet about his last Beauty, on 6th March.

Fingers crossed, then - that's the one I've booked for. But in the grand scheme of things, being fit for Mayerling's rather more important .
