I hope the injury is not serious, for Johan in first instance, of course, and for me as well! I’m coming from Milan on the 19th for Mayerling expressly for him (...and Alina, as obvious), and I’m coming on the 6th for Alina & Johan matinee (I bought this ticket in October!). Please, bring us up to date on this!Anna

I was sitting very close to the stage in the Stalls Circle on R/H side and during Johan's opening brief solo at the beginning of Act II there was a very obvious and extremely uncharacteristic wobble (particularly noticeable on his left foot/ankle) on the landing for the second of his tours en l'air and he looked uncomfortable, although since the Prince is uncomfortable with life at this point in the ballet he was able to disguise it well!It was interesting that Monica Mason has been sitting in the Grand Tier for the Prologue/Act I, which started 7/8 minutes late (for what reason, I wonder?), but was clearly down in the wings and able to be on stage to make an announcement very quickly about Johan's injury at the strategic moment just before the Lilac Fairy's appearance to the Prince. Given what happened when Alina had to retire from Manon last year (the mad dash from home by Taxi for Jaimie Tapper to take her place), it was also interesting that Federico Bonelli was standing by (although not changed for the part). Does anyone know if it is policy to have dancers ready to step in for the Principal roles or was Federico there for a specific reason? Poor Natasha - her SB seems to be jinxed. She lost her Aurora before the end on the opening night last March and now she loses her Prince on the opening night of this season. More considered thoughts on the performance to follow.... Graham

I had thought Kobborg looked unhappy from the start and I wasn't surprised at the announcement, although still distressed for him. I wonder if he has been over-dancing? That aside, I thought it was brilliant and that the Lilac Fairy and the Bluebird, danced by Lauren Cuthbertson and Ivan Putrov respectively were particularly impressive, apart from Alina (my favourite dancer, although I loved Sarah Wildor and still lament her departure)and Bonelli. Is it true that the main dancers don't have understudies in the House? My daughters dance and have done some professional musical theatre - eldest daughter's dearest wish, youngest daughter is torn between ballet and jazz!- and there is always an understudy at hand. This is the first time I have been able to get this website to send mails, (although I've used it a lot, especially for dancewear - thank for the links, Bruce, Thelma at Wear-Moi is a treasure!)and I am so pleased I can join in now!

"Does anyone know if it is policy to have dancers ready to step in for the Principal roles or was Federico there for a specific reason?" In response to this, citing S.F. Ballet as my example, and I think the Joffrey as well, it is usual to have company members sign in by 7 even when they are not dancing or taking the warm up class, specifically for such reasons. I cannot cite instances, but I do know such sudden substitutes have occurred, but infrequently, since Tomasson became artistic director. Usually, however, the substitutes happen before the curtain goes up and the alternates are announced before the orchestra starts. |

Major changes to the staging in the Prologue and Act II have greatly enhanced the production, and the Lilac Fairy is now very much the centre of attention at the key moments. I thought Cojocaru was absolutely radiant in Act I, especially in the amazing series of fast turns she did in the solo. The late start, and the fact that Kobborg wandered off stage during rhe court dances makes me wonder if his fitness was already suspect, and so his cover (clearly Bonelli) would be kept on standby. Cuthbertson was graciousness personified as the Lilac, and Morera stood out in the Prologue as Temperament. McGorian was a particularly lovely Queen. Putrov danced a most outstanding Bluebird, and was well matched with Salerno |

Oh, dear, I hope it's not too serious and that he recovers soon. I must admit, though, I did think he was a little more ... subdued, shall we say ... than I expected in the triple bill this week, and I wondered if there was a slight problem then... But perhaps it's just me. There are a lot of injuries/indispositions at the moment, and I'm very aware that the dancers have been dancing pretty much without a break, apart from their short "half-term" one, since before Christmas. |

"To show how observant we are( or what rotten seats row V in the orchestra stalls are!) we didn't even know poor Mara had not come back on!" I'm afraid I can't agree with Fiz about row V in the stalls. To me they (but particularly V12-20) and row W are some of the best seats in the house. I'm greatly saddened that Mr Kobborg is injured and wish him well for a complete recovery (rather that just speedy). Martin |

"We are going to see 'Mayerling' with Alina nd Kobborg (I very much hope!) - not the kids, just me and my husband!" Dear Fiz, Lucky you. I think myself and a friend are booked for Jonny Cope on 26 March. If it's not impolite, have you considered using the kiddy whoopee cushions that are available from the entrance foyer desk free of charge? I'm only 5ft 6ins and have absolutely no scruples whatsoever in using one to overcome either gentle giants or ladies with big hair. Martin |
