"out-of-print book"

Is anyone prepared to give away or sell cheaply - or know where to find - John Gruen`s "The Private World of Ballet" , published in the
mid-Seventies or thereabouts? I'm also still looking for ballet penfriends who write to me regularly and not use the Internet. I prefer classical ballet and companies like RB,BRB,ENB,ABT,NYCB,Kirov,Bolshoi,Paris Opera etc.

I just did a search for this book on Amazon.com and it listed 14 copies that are available. The price was only $4.00 US.

Go to Amazon.com, select "books" then type in the complete name. Then click under "availability," and 14 sellers will come up. I just purchased a terrific book with this method and it worked fine for me.

Hope this works for you.

I have this book in my collection and can recommend it to everyone !
It's published in 1975 by Viking Press, New York and by The Macmillan Company in Canada.
Remarkable that among companies as the RB, Stuttgart ballet, Les ballets du XXme Siècle, ABT, NYCB and City center Joffrey Ballet, the Paris Opéra Ballet wasn't worth to be mentioned !

Anjuli Bai is absolutely right about Amazon's second hand book service. In today's Sunday Times 'Culture' section, Brian Appleyard sings its praises, saying that he has not had once to visit a secondhand bookshop, since discovering Amazon. I can vouch for that too. Twice this year I have found out-of-print titles easily and had them delivered within days.

I can't agree completely on this. It's fine for dancebooks : there are plenty of them, they are cheap and the internet is the best way to reach the relatively small number of balletomanes. Searching for a specific title could take months, years in the days before internet, although buying in my favourite secondhand shops is -most of the time-cheaper. It's totally the opposite for the books on collectibles I'm interested in . Prices are outreageous for out-of-print titles

If you are looking for an out of print book I would suggest trying abebooks.com or co.uk. They are a site which sells thousands of out of print books and rare ones. I have found many dance books I've been looking for on there.

Unseen and soon forgotten...the journey is the art.

There are two other sources for second-hand books you might also want
to note: One is www.abe.books.com and the other is the second-hand book service of Barnes & Noble, which is probably amazon.com's biggest
rival. I have seen British and European sources listed on abe.books' offerings. I have been hunting for several books, some of them outside the ballet world, and have had particularly good luck with abebooks.I looked within the week and did not see the title amongst their offerings.

A comment on the non-inclusion of Paris Opera dancers. I am not certain whether John Gruen is French-conversant, which would be a big factor in interviewing candidates for The Private Life in Ballet. It also was
a highly U.S. self-conscious era in dance in this country when a good number of books were being published and companies felt dance books were a good investment - a situation which does not seem to apply currently.

For books I use www.bookfinder.com - it includes abe and many, many other sites for used and out-of-print books, as well as sites that carry new books at discount.

I found a beautiful copy of Crickmay's "Dancers" on an Australian site for less than half what it cost at any US site - including the airmail postage!

Have to share something funny. I wasn't paying much attention and
added an s to bookfinder. I came up with xxxbookfinders.com, a site
which looks tremendously risque. Startled, I looked again, eliminated the s and got the very informative book site mentioned. How one letter can
make the difference!
