"New Year's Eve Gala on arte-TV"

While zapping through my TV programmes I was in for a treat this evening: On arte TV there was a transmission of the New Year's Eve Gala from the Mariinski Theatre from St. Petersburg. I missed the first ten minutes, but the rest of the programme was the third act of Sleeping Beauty in the reconstructed version. And as a 'special appearance' Uliana Lopatkina danced the Dying Swan.
Unfortunately I'm not familiar with the dancers of the company, so I can't give you details, but I was totally thrilled.
Has someone seen this and is able to give the names of the dancers?

Thanks, Vera

This is probably the wrong place to post this, but I'm sure I can rely on nice Mr. Bruce to redirect it -

Someone used to post regularly here a list of forthcoming dance performances on radio and tv - do they still do so? And if so, where can it be found?

John.

Small but important point - Sadly I can't redirect/move individual posts. I can move threads but I can't move individual posts. If the need is great we have to repost and delete... so its great when peopel get it right!

It was Pete and sadly he has not been able to do it for some years. Info about future performances always goes in News - that's the place to look for anything we have.

Hello everybody, and a Happy New Year to all of you!

Having moved from Japan to Germany 5 years ago, I have been subjected to a life with very little ballet (Japan is a heaven for a ballet lover!), but sometimes - living in Germany offers a lovely surprise. So we watched the wonderful broadcast from the Mariinsky Theater on ARTE (German/French TV channel) last night. It was the first time to see the Sleeping Beauty in the Vikharev reconstruction - although it was only the third act, it was thoroughly enjoyable. Here are the names of the main dancers :

Ekaterina Osmolkina (Princess Aurora), Andrian Fadeyev (Prince)
Viktoria Tereshkina (Diamond), Jana Selina (Gold),
Maria Sirinkina (Silver), Daria Sukhorukova (Sapphire)
Yuria Bolshakova (Princess Florine) *, Anton Korsakov (Blue Bird)
Xenia Ostreikovskaya (White Cat), Anton Lukovkin (Puss in Boots)
Ekaterina Kondaurova (Lilac Fairy), Islom Baimuradov (Carabosse, I think)

It was really such a treat. Osmolkina was sweet and gentle, very much a fairy tale princess. Fadeyev looked dashing and danced like a real prince. I thought the music for the jewelry fairy variations was a touch too fast (maybe Gergiev had thirst?), but they all danced beautifully, especially Tereshkina with such confidence and aplomb, and my favorite Sukhorukova. Ostreikovskaya was the beautiful, sensual cat - she never fails to please me in whatever she dances. Korsakov looked like he was still recovering from the injury which prevented him from dancing in Japan when the company had a 3 weeks tour in December, which was sad. Kondaurova had a short, but impressive appearance, and Baimuradov - it was a shame that we just got a glimpse of him as he crossed the stage for about 3 seconds at the beginning - he looked so wonderfully awful that I’m sure we would have enjoyed more!

* Daria Pavlenko was credited as the Princess Florine at the end of the broadcast, but it certainly was not she who danced last night. The official Mariinsky playbill (in Russian) lists Bolshakova. I had not seen Bolshakova before, so I can not be 100% sure that it was, in fact, she; but the ballerina who danced Princess Florine looked like the Bolshakova I know of from pictures. She has a lovely round face (which reminded me of Asylmuratova, well, a bit), looked very fresh, has nice long arms and legs, danced elegantly.

And yes, Lopatkina danced the dying swan - very sublime.

I believe Tatiana Tkachenko was replaced as Gold by Yana Selina - I thought I had spotted her face last night, and Sophia on Dansomanie confirmed it. It's a shame too they credited Daria Pavlenko at the end while she didn't appear - they should check that.

It was indeed a treat, especially in the early evening, as ballet tends to be broadcast in the middle of the night in France. I enjoyed very much Osmolkina's phrasing and musicality (her variation looked particularly good), but she is not a natural Aurora IMO - she doesn't radiate warmth or gentleness in a way some other dancers do. It's just as well, she was perfect as Gamzatti when I saw her last year, but I wish the Kirov had recorded someone else. She and Andrian Fadeev were terrific dancing-wise though !
I also loved Tereshkina's Diamond, she coped really well with the very fast tempo Gergiev was using. Yulia Bolshakova was quite lovely as Princess Florine, but her Bluebird (Anton Korsakov) wasn't exactly as his best.

Let's hope Arte keeps on showing the Mariinsky's New Year Gala in the future - it's a real treat to have a chance to see these wonderful dancers, especially since the company releases so few DVDs.

Hello Azulynn, thank you so much for correcting my mistake!
I do not know why I typed Tkachenko’s name while I knew in my head that it was actually Jana Selina - while watching, I told my husband that I had seen her (Selina) when she was a child (probably at age 10 or so) and came to Tokyo with the Vaganova Ballet School ! I just corrected my previous post accordingly.

So that was Bolshakova who danced the Princess Florine - she was very pretty, wasn’t she?

Yes, I too, absolutely loved Bolshakova. Light, quick and most importantly – inspired, she knocked my socks off with her delicate characterication of Florine.

Yet, I was looking at her Florine and saw Giselle. Does anyone think that Julia will make a good Giselle? And sooner, rather than later. Hopefully before she is old enouph to portray Giselle’s mother

Yulia Bolshakova delighted London ballet lovers with her Odette-Odile two years ago:
http://www.ballet.co.uk/magazines/yr_06/jan06/interview_bolshakova_0805.htm
After that success she was given a chance to dance Giselle (with Ivanchenko) but although the role suits her so well, it wasn't an entirely successful performance, mainly due to technical errors.
In fact, it could be affected by her foot injury. Anyway, there was no other 'Giselle' performance with her since then.
I would love very much to see her in that role.

I cannot say she "delighted" Paris as Odette/Odile last year (it was by far the worst performance of the part I've seen in a company of that level, with plenty of technical mistakes and little characterisation - a teenager's try, but the management is to blame and not her...), but she seems tu have very much matured since then, if we are to judge from her Princess Florine. She's down to dance again Swan Lake this month in Saint-Petersburg, and hopefully when she's gained confidence she'll get another chance at Giselle.

I saw Julia live in exact same role of Florine during 2005 Kirov-Mariinsky tour in Detroit. She was good, but not that good, decidedly overshadowed by Xenia Ostreikovskaya, who was absolutely spectacular in that role. I see much improvement her recent Gala performance. She has opened up a lot and is not afraid to express her individuality. Her exotic appearance and nervous energy makes her standout from other dancers of her rank. I believe that bright future awaits this girl.

Sorry for bumping up an old thread.

Ever since I was 12 I've been fascinated with the original production of Sleeping Beauty and was thrilled when they finally reconstructed it. Sadly it's never been performed anywhere near enough for me to see it so I was very excited when I heard Act II was filmed for part of the Gala.

Does anyone know if Arte will ever repeat it and/or if it'll ever get a DVD release? Or any other way for me to see it?

Thanks so much

Eric

This has just been released on DVD and is available from the ROH and Coliseum shops, also online from Dance Books at £17.99. I'm glad I checked here because Daria Pavlenko is still listed as Princess Florine but I had a feeling it wasn't her, nice to know that it's Yulia Bolshakova, she does indeed dance with the most incredible delicacy and phrasing. Also nice to see Osmolkina, who I only knew by name before, another very delicate performance, in fact it's a fascinating but very short DVD, the scenery and costumes of this re-constructed version are shown to good effect, if only it was complete! Of course it's really a New Year Gala, in fact after the pas de deux, Uliana Lopatkina dances the Dying Swan, very out of place, and at the end the chorus sings the music of the apotheosis, while everyone mingles onstage.

Also included is a documentary which has a few interesting scenes of rehearsals, but is mainly shots of the same performance, and St.Petersburg New Year scenes, and far too much of Gergiev for me!

Thanks for your information, Beryl. I remember that it was Bolshakova who danced Florine.

There is another New Year's Eve Gala in the Mariinsky Theatre in two weeks' time, but the programme hasn't been announced yet. I don't think that it's going to be televised again.

Prior to the New Year's Eve gala, there is also going to be another smaller-scaled Gala for the ballet and opera stars including Uliana Lopatkina on December 23 and 24.
