"2005/6 season Mariinsky Theatre - Thread 1"
| |
LAST EDITED ON 07-01-06 AT 01:31 AM (GMT) Diana Vishneva will finally make her debut as Odette/Odile on 21 September with the Kirov Ballet in the opening ballet performance of the new season, partnered by Igor Kolb. Vishneva has already danced Swan Lake with other companies including the ABT and Berlin Staatsoper. Here is the playbill for September on the Mariinsky website.http://www.mariinsky.ru/en/playbill?pbmy=200509 Thanks to NO7 for alerting me in another thread on the Kirov's overseas tours. |

I would be very interested to know why the Mariinsky Theatre considered Visneva so unsuitable for the role of Odette/Odile until now. What exactly does the role of O/O require that the Mariinsky Theatre thought she did not have and now does? Certainly if we are to look at unsuitable ballerinas for the role, surely one need look no further than Alina Somova, who danced the part on the Wednesday evening during the London season , whose hyper-extensions, as I wrote at the time, had little to do with the Petipa/Ivanov and more to do with displaying her own technique. I hope very much that someone will be able to report back from her debut... It is a very great shame that Manon is unlikely to be performed anymore as part of this season. |

"Manon" unfortunately won't be danced by the Kirov again until Lady MacMillan agrees to renew the Kirov's licence for that ballet. This is not the only case of inexplicable casting decisions by the Kirov. I don't understand either why Vishneva wasn't allowed to dance Odette/Odile till now, when her dancing of this ballerina role with the ABT two months ago received a glowing review from the eminent New York Oberver critic Robert Gottlieb. Another example is the relegation of Irina Zhelonkina to minor roles in recent years and not fully developing her potential as a classical ballerina. Leonid Sarafanov has also provoked a lot of controversies lately among Kirov followers. In the current issue of "Ballet Review", Joel Lobenthal wrote "...Since he joined the Kirov in 2002, Sarafanov has had almost the entire repertory handed to him, but at twenty-two he is not plausible in heroic or danseur noble roles." |

LAST EDITED ON 01-09-05 AT 04:19 PM (GMT) A short press release on the opening of the new season on 20 Sept. has been posted earlier this week on the Mariinsky website.http://www.mariinsky.ru/en/massmedia/press/open213 There isn't that much information on the ballet repertory. I hope that there will be a more detailed press release available in due course. The Ballet company still hasn't returned from the summer holiday yet. The Mariinsky Ballet Festival next year will run from March 16-26, according to this press release. The Mariinsky Theatre will close for renovation at the end of this season, and the performances thereafter will be held in other theatres in St. Petersburg. |

Vishneva's Odette/Odile was a personal triumph, much improved from her Swan Lakes in New York. However, the Kirov's treatment of her has been disgraceful. Reportedly, the ballet administration had vowed that she would never dance Swan Lake on the Mariinsky stage, and after Gergeiv insisted she be given the opening, a defamation campaign was waged.
She was the most tender, most vulnerable of Odettes, and a scintillating yet restrained Odile. In neither role was there a whiff of the straining and over-reaching that the young dancers in the company practice. Instead, she was a model of discretion and nuance. As in New York, Vishneva was coached here by Elena Tchernichova. Kolb was not in his best form and there wasn't much chemistry between them.

Hello! I'm new to this board, and I have been searching eagerly for a review of Vishneva's first O/O at home. Thanks Ripowam! It sounds like she toned down her performance for the home team. In New York, she was more flamboyant, IMO. I wouldn't think that Kolb would be an ideal Siegfried for her either. Maybe Andrian, or even D. Korsuntsev would have been better matches for her debut. With great respect to Diana, I don't think she's been mistreated in ANY way by the Maryinsky Theatre. She and Uliana have practically divided the repertory between them. Also they both enjoy the complete favor and confidence of the Management and V. Gergiev. There are many other exceptional dancers in the MT who are slighted all day long and unappreciated. Many who deserve the prestige of an opening night, but never get it. Many, who having experience, are under utilized, while others,(who are pushed ahead too soon), need to be benched until they're ready. |

LAST EDITED ON 23-09-05 AT 08:51 PM (GMT) Yes, there are certainly many exceptional performers in the company who are abused and do not have Vishneva's clout to at least marshall some firepower in response. And yes, quite a few of the whelps need to be benched for a while. But this was NOT the Kirov's finest hour. I am still in fact, a bit flabbergasted at the companý's behavior. Yes, Vishneva was much better than in New York. She and Tchernichova rehearsed every day beginning at the end of August. |

According to the Mariinsky Forum, the impressions were mixed. Seemingly, local audiences have had problems with the ways Vishneva and Kolb approached the roles of Odile and Siegfried. Perhaps the anticipation was high, but their interpretations did not come up to the expectations. |

LAST EDITED ON 01-11-05 AT 03:54 AM (GMT) The schedule for December has now been posted on the Mariinsky website. The Kirov Ballet will return to St. Petersburg on 6 December from their Paris tour.http://www.mariinsky.ru/en/playbill?pbmy=200512 Of particular interest are the return of "Jewels" to the repertory, as well as the annual performances of Vainonen's production of "Nutcracker" by the Vaganova Academy. Lately the Kirov company have mostly been dancing Chemiakin's production of Nutcracker at home in St. Petersburg. |
