"Imagery"

   Hi everybody.

What do you think of the current images used by Birmingham Royal Ballet?

As most of you will have noticed, the 2007-08 season marked a move away from studio photography being used in Birmingham Royal Ballet’s promotional materials, in favour of live performance photography from the ballets in question. The 2008-09 season continues this, and I've posted some examples below for those who've not seen them. What have people thought of the imagery, and the way it presents the Company?

The Firebird

Beauty and the Beast

Sylvia

'Still Life' at the Penguin Cafe

The Dance House

Cheers,

Rob

Well, this is a style I much prefer (and for programmes too) - but one where it is often harder to get such a controlled shot that a studio set up allows.

In performance shots are the much real (to me at least).

Performance photographs make the art form come alive for many - costume, colour, creativity. Studio images can often appear rather sterile and distant, they don't connect in quite the same way. However, if like me you are into the detail and nuance of alignment and technique then studio images offer an absorbing and a fascinating insight into the inner workings of the art form.

Out of interest do companies use focus groups to give feed-back of this sort? The results would be more "scientific" as it would test a wider range of opinion for marketing purposes other than those already "sold" on the art form.

The images used to illustrate the thread topic are stunning and reflect the current form of BRB!

   Hi everybody,

Thanks for your positive comments so far. And in answer to your question Kitri, we do sometimes use formal focus groups, but always welcome any additional feedback you may care to give!

Cheers,

Rob.

Ballet is a performance art, and it makes sense therefore that mid-performance photography should form the basis of publicity materials. Looking at the images, I want to be there, in the theatre, watching it happen.

At the same time, photographs from behind-the-scenes are also enticing, but perhaps better suited to the website. The 'Take Five' rehearsal images are a good example!

Studio photographs aren't as interesting though. Mid-performance photographs say to me that "BRB mean business".

How about some video footage online?

I agree I would rather see performance pictures - they sell the ballet to me and I want to go and see it for myself. I think photos above are gorgeous.
