LAST EDITED ON 21-02-10 AT 04:23 PM (GMT) by Bruce (admin) I just noticed that the rep & dates for the Covent Garden summer season are on the ROH website, although something is clearly wrong with the listing as the dates for Spartacus and Coppélia are identical.Friends booking opens on 2 March 2010 and general booking on 6 April 2010. Tickets priced between £10-97. Spartacus 19 / 20 / 21 / 31 July at 7.30pm / 31 July at 2.00pm Coppélia 19 / 20 / 21 / 31 July at 7.30pm / 31 July at 2.00pm Serenade / Giselle 22 / 23 / 24 July at 7.30pm / 24 July at 2.00pm Russian Seasons / Petrushka / Paquita 29 / 30 July at 7.30pm Le Corsaire 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 August at 7.30pm Don Quixote 6 / 7 August at 7.30pm / 7 August at 2.00pm / 8 August at 3.00pm The correct dates are now known and in this post: http://www.ballet.co.uk/dcforum/DCForumID12/212.html#13

Thank you very much, KM, for spotting it. An excellent programme I think. We will see 4 new ballets - a full-legth one and three 1-act ones. And Giselle will be shown in a double bill with Serenade, which is quite generous. However, they have to check and correct the dates for Spartacus and Coppélia: Spartacus 19 / 20 / 21 / 31 July at 7.30pm / 31 July at 2.00pm Coppélia 19 / 20 / 21 / 31 July at 7.30pm / 31 July at 2.00pm ???????????? |

Thank you, Carboni1, for showing the right dates here. It is really unfortunate that the ROH have been failing to spot their error for days and had to be prompted to put it right by outsiders. I know that. Why can not they check properly their information before presenting it to the public? By the way, talking about information from the ROH (although off the Bolshoi topic). When Polunin was dancing in The Nutcracker today, there was no mentioning in the programme, as it is usually being done, that he replaced Putrov who was announced earlier. |

LAST EDITED ON 01-01-10 AT 08:47 PM (GMT) Just thought - I think there is a partial date clash with the Mikhailovsky tour as well at the start of the tour - any one know their dates and rep? I think they will be at the Coliseum closely followed by Carlos Acosta with his show - certainly will be a feast of ballet in July/August! |

^^ if you sign up to the Victor Hochhauser website (assuming they are promoting this tour) you will most likely get priority booking in between the ROH Friends and Public booking as per the Kirov. I think Mikhailovsky are due to bring Giselle and Swan Lake and ENB has Swan Lake as well in June so we'll be drowning again whatever LOL!! I agree would have been good to see Bolshoi bring Esmerelda and/or Flames of Paris and I'd like to have seen Pharoah's Daughter again too. Either way I am just glad they are coming! |

Victor Hochhauser presents THE BOLSHOI OPERA AND BALLET AT THE ROYAL OPERA HOUSE, COVENT GARDEN19 July – 8 August 2010 Public booking opens 6 April 2010 www.roh.org.uk/bolshoi The magnificent Bolshoi Ballet and Opera companies return for an exciting four week season at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, to be presented by Victor Hochhauser who first brought the Company to this country nearly fifty years ago. Now, together with the celebrated Orchestra of the Bolshoi Theatre, there is another opportunity to see this great Company in spectacular ballet and opera productions. BOLSHOI OPERA ‘The most intense, emotional Tchaikovsky that has ever been seen’. The Bolshoi Opera presents the British premiere of Dmitri Tcherniakov’s powerful production of Tchaikovsky’s great romantic masterpiece, Eugene Onegin, to be conducted by Dmitri Jurowski. The Bolshoi’s incomparable singers include the sensational winner of the 2009 BBC Cardiff Singer of the World competition, Ekaterina Scherbachenko. The Bolshoi’s Eugene Onegin has toured Europe, Japan, China and Russia, and is one of their most acclaimed productions, hailed for its intensity and passion. Eugene Onegin 11,12,13,14 August at 7pm BOLSHOI BALLET
Highlights of the ballet season include the Bolshoi’s joyous revival of Coppélia, which has earned ecstatic accolades since its premiere in Moscow last year, and a fascinating triple bill of three celebrated ballets by some of Russia’s supreme choreographers: Fokine’s immortal Petrushka set to Stravinsky’s extraordinary score; the Grand Pas from Petipa’s masterpiece Paquita, in a revival by Yuri Burlaka; and the British premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s Russian Seasons, an exuberant celebration of Russian folk dance. Three renowned classics particularly associated with the Bolshoi’s matchless vitality return to the stage of the Royal Opera House. The season opens with Yuri Grigorovich’s legendary staging of Spartacus to Khachaturian’s famous score and closes with Don Quixote, an exhilarating celebration of the Bolshoi’s breathtakingly virtuoso dancing and irrepressible wit. Following its spectacular success in 2007, Alexei Ratmansky’s recreation of Le Corsaire returns with its exotic blend of love, intrigue and deception. In contrast, Balanchine’s great twentieth-century classic, Serenade and the haunting Giselle, performed in Yuri Grigorovich’s acclaimed version, combine in a programme which displays the elegance and beauty of the Bolshoi’s incomparable dancers. The full complement of the Bolshoi’s leading dancers including Maria Alexandrova, Anna Antonicheva , Maria Allash, Nina Kaptsova, Natalia Osipova, Ekaterina Shipulina, Svetlana Zakharova and Yuri Baranov, Mikhail Lobukhin, Andrei Merkuriev, Ruslan Skvortsov, Nikolai Tsiskaridze and Ivan Vasiliev will perform in London. >the British premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s >Russian Seasons, an exuberant celebration >of Russian folk dance. Funny, I could have sworn that was what NYCB danced at the Coliseum a couple of years ago? Does anyone have any more feedback on the Eugene Onegin? I never entirely trust what I read in press releases ... |

33. "RE: PR: The Hochhausers"
In response to message #32
| |
When looking at Victor Hochhausers website I noticed something that I had missed before: they received two awards last autumn. One of them is not just a prize but a national order of the Russian Federation: "Two further awards for Victor and Lilian Hochhauser. On 27 October 2009 The President of the Russian Federation, Mr Dmitry Medvedev signed a decree that Victor and Lilian Hochhauser are to be awarded the Order of Friendship of the Russian Federation for their considerable contribution to the strengthening and developing of Russian-British relations. On 16 November 2009 The Royal Academy of Dance honoured Victor and Lilian Hochhauser with the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award 2009, to mark their lifetime contribution to dance in Britain." I really want to congratulate Victor & Lilian Hochhausers. They have been representing opera and ballet companies and individual dancers, singers and musicians for over 50 years and proved to be not only successful impresarios but also people of spirit, courageous and high-hearted. When Mstislav Rostropovich was ostracized in the USSR for his support of Solzhenitsyn and for disagreements with the Soviet system, then was forced to leave his country and both he and his wife Galina Vishnevskaya were stripped of the Soviet citizenship, it were the Hochhausers who met the exile in Heathrow and offered him professional, practical and moral support. They knew what risk they were taking and were ready to sacrifice a huge chunk of their business, which they were inevitably doomed to loose. The monopolistic Soviet agency Goskontsert stopped all dealings with them and the Russian business went in Britain to a newly formed company Entertainment Corporation (which eventually went bankrupt). Only about 18 years later, after the collapse of the USSR, the Hochhausers resumed their collaboration with the Russian companies and artists now freed of the Soviet system. My congratulations to Lilian & Victor with their awards and thank you for their integrity and loyalty to artists. |

36. "Dancers not appearing"
In response to message #35

Having had a closer look at this casting list, I have to express a certain disppointment that some "senior" dancers are once again absent from London. I have already mentioned Lunkina and Uvarov, but also absent, once again, are Stepanova, Gracheva and how sad that Rhyzkhina (who almost made her longed-for London performance in 2007 but was prevented by injury) is not coming also. Neither, too, Allash nor (a particular disapointment for me) Gudanov, whose Albrecht I was looking forward to seeing. I hope this does not suggest a new trend at the Bolshoi, similar to that now current at the Mariinsky, where older dancers are being pushed aside in favour of a young generation. |

LAST EDITED ON 09-07-10 AT 09:25 PM (GMT - BST) The changes have not yet been posted anywhere in English yet, but a press release in Russian on the Bolshoi's website signals some major changes in the announced casting: http://bit.ly/bmvzlTZakharova is out of the tour, as are apparently Ekaterina Shipulina and young soloist Angelina Vorontsova. Marianna Ryzhkina joins the company in London. Alexandrova no longer dances Coppelia - Osipova gets the opening night and now performs with Skvortsov, Stashkevitch gets one more performance. The Giselle line-up has changed completely: Osipova/Skvortsov on opening night instead of Zakharova, then Nikulina/Volchkov & Kaptsova/Skvortsov. Alexandrova/Tsiskaridze lead both performances of the Paquita Grand Pas. Ekaterina Krysanova gets one Medora in lieu of Shipulina. Some drastic changes as well in the Don Quixote line-up: Osipova/Vasiliev now get 2 performances but not their original one, Marianna Ryzhkina steps in to do one Kitri. |

Thanks for that, Azulynn. I wonder if some kind person could anglicize that Russian cast list, as the ROH don't seem to be aware of the changes yet. I remember the last time the Bolshoi were here someone joked that the best way to see the dancers you wanted was to book the dates when they weren't scheduled to appear... |

Well it makes me wonder if publishing casting in advance is more a hindrance than a help. I remember in 1986, when there was no advance casting, eventually during the season a hand written casting board appeared appeared in the window of the old box office in Floral Street. A much ammended hand written casting board. |

LAST EDITED ON 13-07-10 AT 01:50 PM (GMT - BST) Just checked the ROH website. The new Don Q castings are up and almost match the changed ones announced on the Bolshoi website last week. I do, however, think there must be a mistake as they have given Osipova the first and last performance but still have her down for her original evening performance on the 7th.As of now, the Coppelia casting has not been changed and Alexandrova is still down for the 22nd July. Also, Osipova is down for the July 26 AND July 27 Giselle with Nikulina down for July 28 I suspect that there are gremlins at work and that we'll see more changes yet. Edited to point out possible mistake in Don Q casting

66. "RE: Giselle programme timings"
In response to message #65
| |
>Have just received an email from the ROH telling me that the >approximate finish time for the Serenade/Giselle bill is >22.50. You have been warned! (Perhaps this is why most UK >companies don't add an extra piece to the programme?) I got that email, too. This was the exact wording: Performance Timings: Act I < 19:30 - 20:05> (35 minutes) Interval < 20:05 - 20:30> (25 minutes) Act II < 20:30 - 21:25> (55 minutes) Interval < 21:25 - 21:55> (30 minutes) Act III < 21:55 - 22:50> (55 minutes) Act III? Have they got it mixed up with the Le Corsaire? |
