Hamlet 11/09/11
Northern Ballet (NBT) UK, Leeds, West Yorkshire Playhouse
Reviewer: Janet McNulty Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Bateman, Batley, Dixon, Goldsmith, May, Moore, Sibson, Torres
"In conclusion, Northern Ballet's Hamlet is a bleak but extremely powerful piece of dance drama that is unmissable. Go see it!"
Swan Lake 27/08/11
Guangdong Acrobatic Troupe of China UK, Birmingham, Hippodrome
Reviewer: Janet McNulty Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"Everyone should go and see this show once in their lives! I hope it comes back soon!"
La Bayadere 14/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: MichaelT Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Kolegova, Korsuntsev, Lopatkina, Ponomarev, Stepin
"But the whole company honoured this old warhorse - never mind its sawdust-and-tinsel score or idiotic plot - with total conviction. A massive ovation from a packed house said only one thing: London loves the Mariinsky; please come back soon."
La Bayadere 13/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: patsomerset Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Kondaurova
"A long day but oh boy was it worth it. In my humble opinion, Kondaurova's Nikiya was a simply stunning performance..."
Anna Karenina 12/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Wulff Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"To sum up my impressions of Anna K in one word - sub-MacMillan. There were echoes of Mayerling, Anastasia and Winter Dreams."
Anna Karenina 12/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: DaveM Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"I found it a fascinating watch, from down in the Stalls Circle. Very intense dramtically, and although the various pdd were short (as determined by the score), I thought they worked quite well to drive along the narrative. Almost a play with no words, with balletic interludes."
Anna Karenina 11/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Beryl Harrison Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Smekalov, Vishneva
"I thought Anna Karenina was much better than earlier reviews had suggested although I don't know how it would look on repeated viewings..."
Anna Karenina 11/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: John Mallinson Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"At 85 minutes it was much too long, or too short depending how you look at it. Ashton would have lopped off half an hour and MacMillan would have added 45 minutes. Ashton might have delivered the essence of the novel with wit and clarity, MacMillan might have delved into the complexities: Ratmansky did neither."
Balanchine - Robbins: Scotch Symphony, In the Night, Ballet Imperial 04/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Bruce Wall Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"What a relief to see 'Ballet Imperial' done 'to speed' with such clarity..."
Balanchine - Robbins: Scotch Symphony, In the Night, Ballet Imperial 04/08/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Anna Merrick Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"Not an exaggeration to say this was the best triple I've seen at the RoH. It started fabulously, then got better..."
Swan Lake 31/07/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Buddy Kahn Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Lopatkina, Somova
"All I can really say is, "Hang in there with this remarkable lady," (Alina Somova) and you may get one of the most beautiful artistic adventures of your life. I certainly am."
Premieres Plus: 31/07/11
Carlos Acosta UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Ian Macmillan Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Acosta, Yanowsky
"Oh, great mystery, indeed - how could a programme with the luxury casting of Acosta and my particular Royal Ballet favourite, Zenaida Yanowsky, have proved so bitterly disappointing?"
Roland Petit bill: Carmen, L'Arlesienne, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort 28/07/11
English National Ballet (ENB) UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Alison Penfold Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Berlanga, Takahashi, Vasiliev, Zhang
"Anyway, I'd be happy to see this bill again, although possibly distributed across several mixed bills next time?"
Roland Petit bill: Carmen, L'Arlesienne, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort 28/07/11
English National Ballet (ENB) UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: DaveM Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Berlanga, Cao, Ramirez, Reimair, Takahashi, Vasiliev, Zhang
"As for Begona Cao’s Carmen, well, she all but left scorch marks on the stage, as she tore into the role. Those smouldering eyes – those long, elegant limbs, the Zizi hairstyle – wow! And phew! The long duet with her Don Jose (Fabian Reimair) was worth the ticket price alone."
Roland Petit bill: Carmen, L'Arlesienne, Le Jeune Homme et la Mort 28/07/11
English National Ballet (ENB) UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Ian Macmillan Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Acosta, Berlanga, Cao, Chalendard, Takahashi
"So, all in all, a most satisfying evening..."
Swan Lake 27/07/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Anna Merrick Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Parish, Shirinkina, Shklyarov, Tereshkina, Nikitina
"Shklyarov is boyishly handsome but entirely princely with an elegant line, a huge jump, and great partnering skills, I was totally smitten. Tereshkina's Odette in Act 1 was heart-breaking and the pdd was incredibly moving, one of the best I've seen."
Swan Lake 27/07/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: DaveM Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Lopatkina
"Overall, enjoyed the performance well enough, without being drawn over the emotional coals, that some other productions have done."
Swan Lake 27/07/11
Mariinsky Ballet (Kirov) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Diandri Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Korsuntsev, Lopatkina
"Lopatkina is I hear considered one of the great Mariinsky ballerinas but on Monday nights performance I found her cold & disengaged & not especially musical. Obviously the music plays & she dances at her own tempo which is fine if you're doing something special, but I saw a lot of exaggerated extensions & from where I was sitting a number of what can only be described as unflattering crotch shots..."
Romeo and Juliet 25/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Alison Penfold Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"By all means, let’s have Ashton’s Romeo & Juliet back again – it’s certainly worth restaging - but properly, next time, please. In its previous incarnation, it was a lot more effective than this version."
Romeo and Juliet 22/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Anna Merrick Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Osipova, Vasiliev
"For me though the only point of the trips to the Coli was to see Vasiliev and Osipova & whatever I thought were the shortcomings of the production & choreography I don't regret a single moment nor a single pound spent."
From Here to There: A Song in the Dark, Plan to A, Banderillero 21/07/11
Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) none
Reviewer: Samantha Daniels Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"The audience really gave the dancers a warm reception and there was plenty of applause at the end of the evening. I would definitiely like to see this company perform again."
From Here to There: A Song in the Dark, Plan to A, Banderillero 21/07/11
Royal New Zealand Ballet (RNZB) UK, Bradford, Alhambra

"It was a delight from start to finish."
Romeo and Juliet 13/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Bruce Wall Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Osipova, Vasiliev
"Saw Ashton's R&J again tonight - Just wanted to say how very much BETTER it handles the interpretation of the Shakespeare than, say, the MacMillan does. Bless Ashton for addressing the banishment..."
Romeo and Juliet 13/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Lynette Halewood Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Lendorf, Osipova, Schaufuss, Vasiliev
"In summary: there was enough here to make you see the point in a chamber version of Romeo and Juliet, but this one still may be pared back too far for many and does look like a budget version. ....But Osipova is gorgeous."
Romeo and Juliet 13/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Ann Williams Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Jeffries, Osipova, Porter, Sleep, Takahashi, Vasiliev
"Just in from this evening's gala performance, and I have to say I loved every minute."
Romeo and Juliet 13/07/11
Peter Schaufuss Ballet UK, London, Coliseum
Reviewer: Beryl Harrison Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Christensen, Eagling, Jeffries, Osipova, Porter, Schaufuss, Sleep, Vasiliev
"Although this production probably would look better in a smaller theatre, Osipova and Vasiliev wouldn't have been able to dance so well so I have no complaints, still think the top prices were ridiculously high though!"
Square Dance, La Valse, Symphony in Three Movements, In The Upper Room 12/07/11
Miami City Ballet France, Paris, Chatelet

Dancers: Delgado
"....overall I was impressed with MCB and thought they did justice to Mr B's pieces!"
Royal Ballet School in the Linbury: Le Corsaire pdd, Monotones 2, En Bateau, Pas de Quatre 08/07/11
Royal Ballet School (RBS) UK, London, Linbury Studio Theatre
Reviewer: Ian Macmillan Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Hernandez
"Esteban Hernandez, in the 'Le Corsaire' PDD, appears to be another young man out of the Polunin box. Very athletic - and a real shock to see that he's 'only' in Upper School Year 1."
RBS annual performance: Checkmate, Monotones 2, Danse Bohemienne, Four Seasons, Spring and Fall, En bateau, Opus 1 08/07/11
Royal Ballet School (RBS) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Terry Amos Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
"But my favourite year was year 11 from White Lodge who will become year 6.1 in the Upper School in the Autumn. I have always liked En Bateau and I think the year-11 cast we saw performing it last week was the best ever."
Royal Ballet School in the Linbury: Le Corsaire pdd, Monotones 2, En Bateau, Pas de Quatre, Reflected, Danse Bohemienne, Opus 1 and others 07/07/11

"I've always been reluctant to write about student performances but, with the quality as high as it was, maybe I can overcome this. I'll cover as much as I can, but, because there were so many items, I can really only try to convey a flavour of what the performances were like..."
Passion and Ecstasy: Allegri Diversi, Carmina Burana 25/06/11
Birmingham Royal Ballet (BRB) UK, Birmingham, Hippodrome

"I found Allegri to be pretty, pleasant but slight. ...Have to say, I thought Carmina Burana was terrific."

"...the evening was both action-packed and very entertaining. I hope it is a first of many such evenings to come."
Romeo and Juliet 19/06/11
Royal Ballet (RB) UK, London, O2 Arena
Reviewer: Rachel Miller Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Cuthbertson, Watson
"I was at the matinee yesterday with Cuthbertson/Watson ...'ve never been this close before and found it really intensified the emotion of the performance. ...The dance of the Capulets at the beginning of the ball(?) scene was fantastic which surprised me greatly, as I've always found it a little dull on video. I think this was in part due to the wonderful performance by the orchestra."
Romeo and Juliet 19/06/11
Royal Ballet (RB) UK, London, O2 Arena
Reviewer: John Mallinson Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Cojocaru, Kobborg
"But, back to my original question, what was the general experience? Is this an experiment worth repeating? For me it was interesting but, in ballet-going terms, scarcely worth the ticket price. The distance from the stage was an insuperable obstacle to involvement. And why could I not buy an ice cream in the interval?"
Romeo and Juliet 19/06/11
Royal Ballet (RB) UK, London, O2 Arena

"Overall an enjoyable evening and worth making the schlepp up from the south coast. I am not so keen on the venue for practical reasons ..all the queuing ... everyone heading for the tube, etc - but OK with the staging."
Romeo and Juliet 19/06/11
Royal Ballet (RB) UK, London, O2 Arena

Scenes de ballet 11/06/11
Royal Ballet (RB) UK, London, Covent Garden
Reviewer: Paul Arrowsmith Ballet.co Postings Review Homepage
Dancers: Cervera, Cuthbertson, Gartside, Hirano, Hristov, Lamb, Stepanek
"Another day, another cast – another impression. I don’t know whether it was a marginally less distant seat or perhaps a faster tempo, but on Saturday afternoon Scènes regained some of its crackle. Wrists flicked and heads nodded if not in an instinctively Ashtonian way, at least idiosyncratically. The largely unchanged corps attacked the choreography with more precision and bite. The choreography smiled back at us."
