5 Minutes on...
Nicholas Dromgoole
Everything you need to know about the Sunday Telegraph dance critic... and in double quick time too.

Looks and Demeanour

Appears to be a slightly mad Don, but with more of an eye for legs than fusty manuscripts. Alternatively Mr Chips but enjoys life with girls perhaps a bit more than in the film. Very much the slightly crumpled mac and sports coat. A battered briefcase and thick black rimmed glasses complete the ensemble. Ever charming to speak to and likes a giggle.

Biggest Claim to Fame

He was married to Lesley Collier - then a gorgeous principal with RB and a little younger than he. Alas no more, but they seem to remain friends.

Hunting Ground

Likes to be near the front. Always in the front row at the Opera House.

Upset Anybody?

Recently upset the AMP brigade by dismissively pointing out on telly that Matthew Bourne has only one basic approach, that of reworking a classic in an odd, dramatic or mildly amusing way. AMP Lovers were livid.

Likes

He has an eye for Sylvie Guillem. Perhaps not the only man to suffer so you might say, but few others declare their passion quite so publicly - here are some quotes

Hates

The Royal Ballet artistic management. He hates them with a passion! Here is his list of the Seven Deadly sins of Anthony Dowell....
  • Producing a bad Swan Lake
  • Getting horrible new sets and costumes for Sleeping Beauty
  • Bringing in a crap Don Quixote production
  • Not getting the Nureyev La Bayadere
  • Paying Twyla Tharp lots for "perhaps the worst full-length ballet the Royal has ever danced"
  • Paying Twyla Tharp for another ballet!
  • Loosing David Bintley as Resident chorographer and not replacing him
Or how about reading the full piece for yourself.

Most Likely to Say

".......... (select one from David Bintley / Derek Deane / Christopher Gable), that marvelously talented and progressive director at the helm of ......"

Most unlikely to Say

"Last night Anthony Dowell triumphed again."

(unless of course the following sentence is "Just when you think he has plumbed an absolute low with the once-great Royal Ballet, along he comes again and does even 'better'!"
