Book – At the Sign of the Harlequin’s Bat, My Years with Cyril Beaumont

by Jane Simpson December 31, 2011 History
Thumbnail image for Book – At the Sign of the Harlequin’s Bat, My Years with Cyril Beaumont

Fifty or sixty years ago, no true ballet-lover would have dreamt of visiting London without calling in at Cyril Beaumont’s famous bookshop in Charing Cross Road. The great and the good of the dance world went to learn from his vast store of knowledge, to reminisce about the golden years of the Diaghilev company, or just to exchange gossip…

Thumbnail image for Forsythe Company – I don’t believe in outer space – Brooklyn

Royal Ballet – The Nutcracker – London

by Jane Simpson December 5, 2011 Reviews
Thumbnail image for Royal Ballet – The Nutcracker – London

The glory of the evening, though, was Marianela Nunez as Sugar Plum, substituting at only an hour or so’s notice for the suddenly indisposed Sarah Lamb, and thereby getting this one performance with Thiago Soares, whose partnering complements her so well.

Boston Ballet – The Nutcracker – Boston

by Alan Helms December 6, 2011 Reviews
Thumbnail image for Boston Ballet – The Nutcracker – Boston

James Whiteside and Lia Cirio made a splendid couple as the Nutcracker and the Sugar Plum Fairy. Whiteside is, as I’ve said in earlier reviews, the best male in the company these days, and though Cirio has not moved me in the past, she’s gained in presence and precision and now makes a stronger impression in her second season as a principal.

New Adventures – Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! – London

by Jann Parry December 27, 2011 Reviews
Thumbnail image for New Adventures – Matthew Bourne’s Nutcracker! – London

Coming-of-age is the default story line of many a dance work based on a fairy tale. The problem with The Nutcracker’s ‘traditional’ scenario is that the growing up takes place in Sweetieland – a young child’s fantasy of overindulgence – while Tchaikovsky’s score is filled with complex emotions.

So… dump the singer, dial up the orchestra, install some more video screens pointed at where people sit and I’d be happy. I think though I’d be happier seeing this production in a normal theatre still. But as presented it’s no bad night and I hope it draws some more people into those theatres
