Treasures should be heaped upon Ponomarov’s High Brahmin… He embodies the Mariinsky’s belief in La Bayadère as a ballet that matters and must therefore be performed as close to perfection as possible.

Hamburg Ballett-Tage & Nijinsky Gala – Four Summer Days & Nights in Hamburg

Thumbnail image for Hamburg Ballett-Tage & Nijinsky Gala – Four Summer Days & Nights in Hamburg

To keep us fit for the prospective five-hour gala in the evening, we had a two-hour cycle ride, followed by a boat trip on an Alster steamer and by 6pm we were in our seats for the Nijinsky Gala XXXVII, an annual event launched by Neumeier in 1975. Tickets sell out as soon as booking opens and outside the theatre were many people holding notices requesting to buy a ticket.

I am so lucky. I was supposed to do Giselle with someone else, and when she got sick they gave me Daria. At first I was so nervous; what was she going to think? I was a young boy, just out of school, and she is a prima ballerina.

San Francisco Review: Universal Ballet in ‘Shim Chung’ – Imitation Petipa, Korean Style

by Lewis Segal August 23, 2011 Reviews
Thumbnail image for San Francisco Review: Universal Ballet in ‘Shim Chung’ – Imitation Petipa, Korean Style

What you do find is absolute unanimity of impetus, a sense that dancers from more than a dozen countries are in perfect agreement about all the niceties of ballet placement, execution and style. No polyglot everything-and-nothing internationalism, no Vaganova bumping into Cecchetti or Balanchine. Just the focused, detailed singularity and refinement that classical dancing should always offer but seldom does any more.

“Frederick Ashton, the ballet and Suffolk” could well be a sub-category of the delights awaiting us in heaven; for the moment, though, it’s the title of a series of exhibitions and events running through the summer in Ipswich, Suffolk’s county town.

In The Night choreographed by Jerome Robbins in 1970 is set to Chopin nocturnes, and it is easy to see the ballet as Dances at an Evening Gathering. Whereas Robbins insisted ‘there are no stories’ in Dances with In the Night you may, as others have done, detect more of a narrative.

The spontaneity and charm that was missing in Kitri was delightfully evident in the sparkling, crisp and humorous Cupid of Valerya Martynuk. She, and the flower sellers of Yana Selina and Viktoria Krasnokutskaya, were a master class in classical precision and timing, matched by the ensemble of eight girls in the last scene.

It would have been easier, I contend, to have taken a straight classical bharatnatyam interpretation of Tagore’s life and work but, instead, the creative team has engineered a diverse approach interpolating dance, music, film, text and style as equal partners…
